K/R Plaid Shirtdress - YouLookFab Forum

I've wanted a shirtdress forever but they are always seem to have button gap or are too short. I found this last night at LL Bean for $19.00 and need to know if it's worth keeping.

I love: the colors (preppy red white and blue), it's very soft cotton, the length is right for me I think, sleeves roll or not, I can layer under and/or over, could work for multiple seasons.
I'm not sure: it's an XL (hence a little poufy below, but no button gape when fully buttoned), honestly is it too young for me or too old for me?
I tried a few options in styling and am open to others.
1 Sequin tee underneath, thick belt, long denim jacket, heather blue tights and blue booties
2. popped navy cashmere over and Anna's boots for fun (too Western? different tights needed?)
3. full disclosure without a shaping topper (this is what gives me pause - I could have some darts added? thinner belt? the belt loops that are attached (for the plaid tie self belt - uck) are a bit high. I can blouson the top a bit more than this.
Help?

I like the look in 2, but the others are giving me pause. I don't think the fit of the top is right. I think you can do better. I vote return.

I think the dress is very cute on you -- definitely not too young!

I agree that the dress it a little too big but I am not sure that is a problem. Did you buy it bigger just to make sure it would button over your bustline? If not I would go down a size. The way you have it styled does not seem to depend on the dress buttoning up all the way.

I like #3 the best because you can see your shape I also like the dress with both sets of boots, the lighter ones more but either will work. I would not blouse the dress more than you have, Actually I would use a wider belt but that depends on how much you want to emphasize your waist. Otherwise you look great!

I am not sure either, but I can't seem to get my head out the "figure flattery" mindset. I should not be trusted with "out of the figure flattery box" items.

I think the fit is leaning a bit frumpy. You've styled it well, and I quite like #1, especially with the booties. Unfortunately, to me it reads as though you have a sort of sloppy fitting shirtdress that you're saving with some good styling. I vote return. Styling should be fun, not hard work!

I really like the plaid, and the colors on you!
I don't think it's either too young or too old, but I'm not sure about the fit. It looks too big to me. If you could alter it to fit I think it could a keeper, but that might be more trouble and expense than it's worth.

#3 is my favorite of all of them, actually. To my eye, the other 2 seem bulky - I actually don't feel like you need a shaping topper, I think the belt does the job. I also agree with everything Day Vies said! I vote keep - but in my estimation, you have excellent style judgement, so I leave it to you to decide!

Wow, lots of different opinions here :). I like 1 and 2 best because they hide the blousing at the waist. I think 3 looks way too big. It will be interesting to see what you decide! I know it's only $19 but that's $19 towards something else that you might like better.

I'm not loving it. I understand how a plaid dress would fit your style but I am not convinced this one is it. I feel this is borderline frumpy. I could see you on one that it more tailored with a straighter line skirt, creating a crisper look.

Anna I love the Ralph Lauren dress, I think maybe I am a bit ungaminelike for this look and it ends up in frumpy land. certain things aren't meant to work no matter how much we want them to. And I love the boots, need to find more ways to wear them.

I really like the idea for you; it totally fits your style. The plaid and the colour are just great! But yeah...the fit gives pause, or maybe it's just the quality of the item itself. I hope you find your dream plaid shirtdress.

I suspect that even in tall it would be too short for you as a dress, but it would make a great tunic, no?

I think you've made a lot out of this shirt dress, but like some of the others mentioned already, I think it is a bit too big. Some tailoring (pleats, inseams, darts) could do the trick, because I really like the idea, and your styling skills are excellent. It's up to you, but I would consider alterations or return.

I am a big fan of shirtdresses and I like this one. It is a little casual but that's part of the charm for me. (But my personal style is quite casual anyway)

Deborah- I am so on the fence now! I had put it in a bag for return, but ANGIE says' ok!! Yikes. I might investigate some minor tailoring (but then I'm locked in of course)

I actually like this (and own something similar) I think you could have some fabric removed from the torso via the side seems if you wanted, but it also works with the belt. I was concerned whether the bust is gaping in photo 1 because I can't quite see what is going on, but I think that may actually just be a fold in the fabric? The colors couldn't be more perfect.
