K/R: Navy Jacket - YouLookFab Forum

Hi, everyone! I need help deciding on this Zara jacket. I bought it for my trip (early July) to London and Edinburgh. I think it is a keeper, but want to be sure and the forum is the best for pointing out things I may not have thought of. Packing space is NOT a big issue, but I do want to pack smart.

Pros:

medium weight
removable lining
has a hood
waterproof
navy not black
love the shape

Cons:

medium weight may be a little too warm
possible duplication. 1. I have a similar, but anorak length coat. However that one is only slightly water repellent and is black. 2. I also have a waterproof and purely functional navy slicker. Nothing fancy, but does the job. It is very light weight.
gold rather than silver hardware
short, so not ideal for heavy rainfall (unlikely we will be out for any time in real downpours, though)
hubby mistook cropped for too small. Wondering if it reads too small to anyone else (it is plenty roomy.)

Your thoughts?

(And I apologize for the odd cropping job. I just couldn't bring myself to crop out my canine photo bomber.)

ETA: Important details: We are travelling with our little kiddos, so we won't be outside all day in miserable weather for their sake. On off drizzly days, possibly, but with lots of time indoors. I would pack both this and the light waterproof slicker and an umbrella. Weather is typically in the 60s and 70s during the time of year when we'll be visiting.

I think it's a really sharp jacket and it fits you well, but it wouldn't be much use in a downpour. Are you planning to take a longer length raincoat too? This one could be good as a windbreaker though.

Can you layer the light weight rain coat over this jacket for your trip?

Missvee, very good point. I would take the lightweight slicker, which is itself a hip length one, too. We'd have umbrellas and we're traveling with kiddos, so we aren't going to be out for extended periods if it is rainy, for their sake.

Joy, not so much. This is definitely a coat weight jacket, so it would be like wearing two coats.

CC, we cross posted. I'd also be taking the waterproof slicker. Makes me think though, why take both when I could take just the waterproof slicker and a sweater.

It looks fantastic. If you can layer the slicker over it for real rain, I'd say it's a keeper. It doesn't look too small to me.

FWIW, though, I ended up sending back a similar (and very cool) quilted vest that I bought from Zara for my current trip. I decided that it was neither fish nor fowl; it wouldn't keep me truly warm (because it wasn't down -- just a quilted fabric) yet it would feel too warm for other days...and would become an orphan back home pretty fast.

I love this jacket on you! However, it seems too short for a useful rain jacket. I like mid thigh for protection especially when walking around a city in windy drizzle. Does it have a hood?

It is a little Burberry-ish so I want you to keep it anyway.

Una, it does have a hood! A goofy looking one, but a hood nonetheless.

I like it, but it seems redundant if you are going to pack a waterproof navy slicker anyways.

It's a fun piece that fits you perfectly. Personally I would find it too short to be useful in bad weather, but I like my tush covered when it's wet out. But if you have room for it, it is adorable.

Groooooaaan! You are all SO RIGHT. You are killing me with all these practical considerations. So reasonable. So right. I'm caving. I give. I'm going to reevaluate this over the next few days and try to decide whether I can justify it as just a topper. Not a trip-specific topper. Just a regular workaday topper.

I'm not going to comment on practicality for the trip; however, let me say that I LOVE it on you. Personally, when I'm looking for a cute, functional topper I cannot find a thing. I'm learning to snap these things up when I find them. I don't know how your wardrobe is, but I just want you to know that it looks great on you. I find I can sometimes sway into frumpy-town when I'm trying to be too functional, but you are far far away from that.

I agree with everyone else. It's cute on you but in actual weather (rain or cold) I wouldn't find it of much use.

It is super cute on you, but I agree that it might not be the best for travelling.

You said it has a removable lining right? Have you tried it on without the liner? If you wore it that way could you then layer over it more comfortably? It looks amazing on you so I'm looking to enable I guess. But how does it FEEL? Is it comfortable to wear? That's so big to me. I recently sent back a great looking jacket myself because it just didn't feel as great as it looked.

I love it for its length and color, and Suz's idea to layer the slicker over it, if necessary, is a good one as I'll often do this to keep warm or dry and it's a great travel trick. btw, I'm digressing a bit, because I love your metallic wedge shoes. They are so cute. Are they comfy and what's the brand? Thanks and you'll have so much fun on your family trip; I look forward to the photos down the road. Remember: Think SUN!

@Vicki, the shoes have been a great workhorse for me. I'm pretty sure that they are in most of my WIWs anymore. I really love them.

Re: comfort. They are totally comfortable for me. The shoes don't have a lot of cushioning, but they feel okay. Not, wow! Heavenly comfort! Just normal, well fitting comfort. I have walked a lot in them, so I think they make the cut. They are a 3 inch wedge heel. But don't despair because....

They are from Shoes of Prey. You can order them anytime in your size and with a heel height that works for you. They are the Shiny Soft Leather in "Dark Silver." I have a black patent wedge heel. The shape is just a mid-heel with a pointy toe and wedge heel selected in the options.

They are a little pricey for the overall quality (more like a $100 shoe quality than a $199 shoe quality). However, at the time I ordered them, I couldn't find them in anything close to this style for under $300, which I refused to pay because I'm arbitrary like that!

Sadly I'm with hubby it looks a little too long to be cropped and too short for a "real" jacket if that makes any sense. It looks like the manufacturer ran out of fabric and decided to call it cropped. I'd pass and find something a lot less ambiguous.

I like it as a versatile, trendy, sophisticated topper and would use this piece to up-level any outfit. It's not gear, it's got some edge (like a moto jacket), it's more interesting than the expected jean jacket, etc. I vote keep. Bring it on the trip, see how it performs. If it downpours, then buy a trench while you're over there...

Are the zippers functional? I.e., are there lots of pockets? That can be uber-handy for traveling, especially with kids.

Something just like this would have worked great on my recent San Fran trip. Not for rain but for wind, and also just fits in with the vibe of that city.
