K/R Kors trench coat ETA updates in comments

Hi all,

As I posted about before, I was expecting a wrap trench that I hoped would fit over my hips without being too large on top. I am definitely a pear and I find double breasted styles difficult to fit.

My gut reaction is that I like this. My husband does not, but he has a bias towards classic trench coats and I think the lapels on this are throwing him. He also likes my current trench coat, which I dislike because it’s too large on top. This one fits me better on top than that one and doesn’t pull on the bottom, since there are no buttons.

Apologies yet again for the terrible mirror, but what say you, stylish ladies?

It's a bit hard to see, but, I agree with you. I think #1 is a much better fit than #2.

Yeah sorry, Kathie, I can’t provide better pics better light until the weekend, when I can take pics during the day. I think the fit is a lot better, which makes it an automatic upgrade, but I want to
make sure I’m not settling.

I don't think it's good enough. I vote pass, Christina - unless the weekend pics prove otherwise.

I know they aren't navy, but I HIGHLY reccomend these two trench coats. They were KILLER SUBLIME on my client today. STUNNING quality - much like Boden. Beautiful streamlined fit.

That’s what I was afraid of, Angie. I don’t want to keep it just because it’s better what I have. It’s a lot better and I like it fine, but I am not sold. I don’t need the coat to be navy, and those coats are cute! There’s a Talbots near me, so I can check those out. The shape looks right! I do love my Boden MAC, but the conversational London print isn’t right for every occasion!

I’ll check back when I can take pics in better light. I’m also too tired today to judge... our house flooded while it was being cleaned today, due to some kind of backed up drains. It’s 10:30 and the plumber is only just arriving. Sigh.

Kathie, those are beautiful but I’m afraid they wouldn’t work for me
due to the buttons below the waist. I need something a-line or otherwise easy below the waist. That peacock color is to die for, though. I hope you get one of these!

The plumbing got fixed! I think the magnitude of the problem was a bit exaggerated since we weren’t home to witness it.

Anyway, I am adding a picture of a trenchcoat in a more classic trench shape that I tried on today. I like this, but it illustrates the fit issue I have with the classic trenches that are narrower in the hips. This one fits across my hips wonderfully. But it’s a little large on top as a result. It’s lots better than the one I own (pic 2 above) but not perfect unless I accept that the top will always have to be too large on me. I still hope to go to Talbots this weekend

Alternations are an option, Angie. I never thought about before because the coats that are large on top are usually so large that moving the buttons alone won’t solve the problem. This one is better than that.

This coat has plenty of stock. Will see Talbots before I decide. The red coat is appealing.

Cardiff girl, I’m wearing one today! But I’m hoping for something a little lighter than this (maybe), in a solid color, and with a tie waist and Boden is not really offering that as far as I’ve seen.

Trenches are one of my favorite things. It's hard for me to find a trench coat I don't love, unfortunately for my closet. Having said that, I think your latest photo is the most beautiful on you.

This is cute but I was hoping to see the red and they just don’t have any of the red ones. They supposedly had stock a few days ago. Anyway I really want a solid color and tie waist. ETA They supposedly do have stock. I went across the street to eat but I may go back and ask. You’d think the red would be easy to spot.

Suz, I’m an Anglophile so that print is my favorite.

I’m going to order the red. I’m glad I tried on the blue first to get a sense of how their coats fit. I’m guessing the sizing will be the same between the two, Angie? I am very happy with how the blue fit, for sure. If the style had been what I wanted, it would have been perfect. I guess the saga continues.

Talbots was packed. My husband and I hear a lot of French here in NYC, especially on the Upper West Side. We speak French so we notice, I finally found all the French ladies - at Talbots!

The Talbots near me has both the red and the blue dot, and since I’m also looking for a colorful trench, I decided to stop by. The red is super cute! But, the fabrication is very different between the two. As you saw, the blue dot is a fairly flexible, not likely water resistant, material, and lined in a great jade green. The red is much stiffer, almost as if it has a weather resistant coating, and unlined, though the seams are beautifully taped with contrasting fabric. I’m looking for something with the fabrication of the blue dot, with a belt, no hood, and in a solid, so I left both at the store. (The one I tried on is a size too large, but even sizing down won’t help with the fabrication.)

Christina, I empathize! For us pears, trying to find coats (and dresses!) that fit well in the shoulders and chest without pulling across the hips can be a very frustrating search. And I may be wrong, but I sense that, as cute as the dotted coat was on you, it lacked a certain grown-up, glamorous sweep that one gets from a longer, traditional trench. I've never had much luck with buttoned trench coats, either, but I longed for that look. Last year in a thrift shop I found a long silky vintage raincoat in the most ethereal shade of luminous sea green. It has a tie belt, and only one button--at the neck, for buttoning up against the weather. Mostly I wear it open, hands in pockets, tie dangling from the belt loops, and I feel mysterious and romantic. If that's the feeling you're looking for, you probably won't get it from the Talbot's & Boden stroller coats, attractive and practical as they may be. I wish you luck finding your ideal coat, whatever that may turn out to be!

Tulle, I did reject the blue dots because it’s a bit cute. I already have that Boden coat filling the cute, printed a-line coat niche. I actually would like something crisp and a bit dressy like the red Talbots coat, though. I don’t think I am looking for a dramatic, sweeping one, as fab as your sounds. And it does sound fab.

Battle of the pinky-red trenches!

1. Talbots. Sleeve fit is great. Bottom button pulls a tad bit , but that’s 90% of coats for me (and why the sleeves fit). One possibily to fix that would be to reorder in a petite size. That often helps. There is also extra fabric on the back of the torso that bunches out over the belt.

2. Michael Kors. The Rack now has a carnation pink version of the black one above. Sleeves too large and long, otherwise fit is good. The only fix here would be altering. Left this at store because I was expecting #1 but there is plenty of stock.

I am going to see what you all think before weighing in.

There is no comparison. The Talbots looks a million times better.

I will say that re: the pink I liked it. But at the end of the day just want to rip the sleeves off it and sew on the ones from the next size down. It’s probably what I’d have settled for before.

That said, I didn’t want to bias anyone but yeah, the first one is lots better.
