K/R jeans. Grey, Really?

So, after much forth about grey and black and depressing colours and wanting more light and white in my wardrobe, I hit upon the solution ofpurchasing thse so-called grey jeans from NYDJ. They cost the roof. They must be 10's. They are the same size and style as my fabulous white NYDJ's.

1) They feel small. Is this just because they have not yet been stretched out, (like, I presume, my white ones have been)?

2.These are more of a taupe than a true grey. I know grey comes in three undertones--green, blue and purple and that likely, all the pieces that I have will be skewed cool--but my heavens. Look at the outfits below and tell me what colour you think these jeans are?

I will be embarrased beyond belief to take these back. (I tried them on. I had the store hold them for a few days. I went in and said no thanks. Then I called and put them on hold. Sent my daughter to get them and pay for them. And now I will show up and return them? Yikes.) But whatever.

What do you say--should I give them a chance or take them back?

(PS, I also reaslised that I like white not only because it is light--but because it is crisp--even winter white has a bit of an edge whereas these are just soft.

#1. Supposed to be a column of grey. The Tee is from the ON order and has yet to e returned. It's just the best grey shirt I happen to have at themoment. I've ordered one size up, already.

#2. With my "Sam Winchester" plaid shirt. Meh.

It doesn't sound like you love them.

Honestly, they look beige on my iPad (starting to think my I{Pad has color issues!). While I get trying to lighten up in the winter months, I struggle with it in pants especially because of snow, muck and slush. I think a deeper grey would work better for this as I believe you are also in a snowy climate.

If you do decide to keep them, can you make at least three outfits with them that make you feel fab?

They don't look tight, but compared to your grey top, they don't look grey either. If you are not 100% happy with them for any reason! you should return. For fall/winter, you might like a black or dark denim. I have a pair of grey NYDJs that are a couple of years old and still tight (not stretched out). They are stretchy enough to be comfortable but I always wear long tunic tops over them. Yours look looser than mine do.

On my screen, these are reading "tan" or beige......not sure what they are like IRL but they don't look grey to me at all....

If they don't make YOU feel great, they go. Period. Shopgirl side-eye be damned. Hold your head up high when you march back in because you care enough to please yourself. (Besides, they're too busy gossiping about the real pieces of work who return stuff damaged, deodorant stained & reeking of cigarettes with the tags clumsily reattached. I should know; I've been a shopgirl.)

Not very grey on my monitor either. If they are indeed more grey than they look, I think it's the warmer tone here that's not working. (you prefer clearer, cooler tones, correct? ) I would try a much darker, steely version . Adds a touch of sophistication to the outfit that the lighter one won't - in my opinion anyways

Thanks thimblelina--yes, I suppose I am really not the worst offender. They are in a little boutique in the Bay--and I just lust after the clothes in there--but almost every single item is way out of my price range. Oh well. I will hold my head high. Thanks for that.

Lisap--Thank you, steely grey is more my speed, for sure. In fact, I just may be able to try on a pair like that tonight at Pennington's. They are having a "Customer appreciation sale." My problem--it starts at 8pm and I was up at 4am--I am more than ready for a night in and early bed.

It sure sounds like you're not loving these. And they look more taupe than grey. It's amazing how much variance there can be within the same style and size.

I loved reading your account of your indecision about buying these in the first place! It shows how selective and thoughtful you have become about your purchases. I also loved Thimbelina's advice to you.

I can't tell the color, but they look a little short and don't seem like the right shade for you. Don't be embarrassed - I am a serial returner.

They are looking a bit beige, and beige pants can have frumpy connotations. They look fine here but will move your style forward? I think you can do better!

They may indeed be smaller than the white version. I've had that happen numerous times, where an item that fits great in one color is a little smaller or bigger in a different color, with there being enough of a fit issue to warrant returning the item.

I say to take them back. You clearly are not excited about them, and there's no point in keeping them if they aren't going to make you happy. It's a time-consuming process getting a wardrobe together from scratch, but trust me, mistakes are so easily made at this point because people settle when they don't need to. What happens is that we settle because we're afraid we won't find something better, but something better almost always comes along—only then we can't buy it because we have our money wrapped up in the first item.

I wouldn't worry too much about the return. I once bought a pair of shorts at BR and then returned them for a different size...and then came back in asking for the first size back! So we all have things like that happen sometimes. Yes, the store was nice to put them on hold for you, but that doesn't mean you are obligated to keep them. You can tell them that they don't match the rest of your wardrobe if you feel awkward. Just say that the color was a little too warm for your other clothes.

They look taupe to me! I think they fit you just fine - but I agree with Alaskagirl - I think they are too short. I really like the idea of a gray jean for you - and would definitely keep looking for one! FWIW - I really like the flannel shirt in pic 2 - it would look great with a pair of true gray jeans!
AND - your glasses are looking beautiful on you!

I think they look nice but you need to be happy with the fit in order to justify the investment.
Don't feel bad if you need to return them. After all, nobody at the store will offer to come over to pay for your credit card bill. It's your hard earned money and you have the right to spend it in what works best for you.

The fit looks OK to me but the color does not read grey at all. I wouldn't be worried at all to return them. They are not what you expected and it's your money!

They look really beige on my screen too. I think if they were a bluer grey they'd be closer to a 10, especially with the tops you've paired them with. And yes, with pants I often find different colors fit differently.

I struggle to return items. I agonize over this. But I have gotten better. I did return some make up a few days ago to The Bay (unopened) after realizing the colour was wrong. A couple of years ago I would have just kept it.

The jeans look tan not grey. The fit is fine. But they were expensive and should be a 10.

I agree they look taupe. I also agree the length isn't ideal--a little longer would be best. And you aren't feeling fab in them.
To return, just show how disappointed you are that they didn't work. ("I soooo wanted these to work; I love my white NYDJs! These just didn't fit the same way, and the color isn't working with my wardrobe.") Then the sales person will feel empathy for you. And it's so true, you are not returning them damaged, so no reason to be ashamed.

I understand your reluctance to return items in person. I get anxious about that also. Just do it though and don't over-think it! These are looking tan on my screen also, they have warm undertones, not cool which is what looks best on you and from what I've learned over the past month, fits your wardrobe. They are clearly just not what you want. You have an entire internet support network cheering you on! Remember us when you walk in to return them. Think how happy your wallet will be since these were expensive. Go on and look for a better pair, the ones that will be 10's! I know you can find them.

Thank you all so much. I spent far more than the pants at a sale tonight (though, sadly, they didn't have any grey jeans left) so I HAVE to return them!

Return. Average fit, average colour. You need like a charcoal and a sharper cut. You've got more personality than these are up for.

I hate returning stuff too. In my quest for "better" I am returning more "not quite good enough", ugh. If they ask why you are returning say "I really wanted to love them but the color of grey just doesn't work with my wardrobe".

Absolutely send them back. And always remember that you are the customer - and are allowed to return items within a particular time frame.

Alana, when you return, blame the store mirrors! The store mirrors often distort -- color can look completely different under florescent dressing room lights vs daytime outdoor lighting. Also often stores tilt their mirrors ever so slightly, a trick which makes you look thinner and trimmer. So hold your head up high when you return something you already took home. If you don't like what you see in your home mirror, then the problem may be not you and your discerning eye/indecision... the problem may be store mirrors meant to trick you into buying!

And for this reason I do not like my local B&M Nordstrom's!! The mirrors are absolutely tilted - dramatically tilted. And the dressing rooms are horribly DARK. They are the worst offenders of all my B&M options.

Not sure if there is a Talbots by you, but they are running 25% off through the end of the weekend. These might better fit the color you are after.
