Ok I’m on the fence with this. Really on the fence
One of my favorite pieces is a jcrew taffeta plaid jacket. It dresses up, it dresses down.
So When I saw this jacket I was interested. This is more outerwear(ish), but I was thinking it would/could also work as an inside jacket. jcrew was 50% off cyber week and after much dithering I ordered it. And now I’m not sure. I’m interested in your thoughts—-what do you think on fit? On function? Do you think it looks to outdoorsy?
Bonus how I’ve worn the one I love

Hmm. Not sure here. Fit is great, colour is great, cute style, but there is a 200% difference between the one you have and this new one . (older one is fantastic) . I think maybe it's the quilting - which gives it an outdoor vibe. I don't dislike it - but I'm thrown off by how great the older one is on you.

I had the same reaction as Lisa. New one is fine, old one is an absolute knockout. Time to play "when would I choose [new jacket] over [something I already own]" I think.

It’s a lot of plaid....ans a lot of crinkle. Not as mixable. More of a statement.
I’m not sold on it for your style but you’re the boss.

I like it on you but it does look like outerwear. I would wear at home on a cold day, or shopping etc, but not to work in an office all day.

The older one is better and a stunner on you.

What drew you to it? To me this jacket looks "fun" or "posh English country side". If it was "fun" you went for, I can totally see this with red trousers and your new white booties!

I like it. The plaid is fun. I wear quilted things inside all the time. But I’m very casual in a casual town.

I ordered it but ultimately returned, as I concluded it had an outerwear vibe that wouldn’t actually work outdoors in my climate, plus it made rustling noises when I moved. It fits you well, and is super cute! If you’re looking for indoor use, I’d probably pass.

I love it for you (and me)! it's casual, cozy, and lined. I would wear it seasonally, but the shape wouldn't date.

OK, I'm not looking at other responses first, so forgive me if I repeat someone else. First off, I'll say that it looks way better on you than in the model photo. But I think this looks hard to wear, honestly, and I don't see that as part of your style -- you make everything look effortless and easy yet still cool and fun, and I think maybe this jacket is wearing you a bit rather than the other way around. I do see the appeal of it, and the plaid is fun, I'm just not sure I love it in the real world.

I did this backwards—read the comments, then looked at the find & then at the pix. Omg, I can absolutely see what everyone is saying about the one you own! It is great. The new one looks as good on you as it is on the model. The single button isn’t doing either of you any favors, but when you I unbutton it, I think the jacket is too long on you. You seem to have ideas about when/how you wear the new one. I’m not seeing them. To me, this looks like something you’d wear under your regular wool or trench coat to add a layer of warmth. A little cuter than it needs to be for that, but if you plan to wear it on its own, you’d have to show me how.

Thanks.. I think SarahD8 summed up what I’m thinking...”new one Is fine”. It is fine, but not great. I want to love it, but I just like it. Thank you all for helping me think this thru. I think as this point I’m going to return it.

I like it and would not hesitate to wear it inside as well as outside, depending on the weather.

Comparing the new jacket to the old one is like comparing apples and oranges - they are completely different, so not a fair comparison! I quite like the new jacket. I agree that it has an outdoor vibe due to the quilting, but I’m one who wears a micro-puffer as a cardigan alternative. I don’t wear cardigans at all, so would definitely wear a jacket like the first one inside if I was cold. Although cut like a proper jacket, it still reads as casual and would work with jeans and corduroys, but maybe not so much as part of a work or dressier combination. It could work with velvet trousers in a tongue-in-cheek way, though. It looks like a ‘fun’ item rather than a serious one.

Teresa mentioned it makes a rustling noise. That would be a problem for me.

I looked at the pics first and thought 1. You didn’t look convinced and 2. I didn’t like it much in comparison to the old one which looks amazing!

I like the new jacket and find it fun and flattering, but it is definitely far more casual than your previous jacket. The new jacket looks fine for wearing at home, whereas the old jacket looks far smarter and something to wear to work - not really a casual weekend jacket. If you want something to replace your old jacket, the JCrew "Going Out Jacket" in Snowy Tartan looks like a better replacement. I remember your old jacket and it sold out so quickly that I missed out.

I love your outfit with the older jacket. Not sure about the quilted tartan, although the principle sounds good. I just don't love the fit. I think I want more shoulder definition and tailoring with the print to give the bold print some structure?

These are so different. I like the idea of the quilted tartan but it's nowhere near as awesome as the OBG!

I'm honestly not a fan of the new one. There's something "off" about it, but I'm not sure what. Maybe it has something to do with the quilting? In any case, I am giving the new jacket a strong vote for return. You can do much better.

Agree that the new one is much more casual and has a more relaxed/loose fit..I’m going to return it. If later, its still available at a really reduced price, i might come back and revisit.

If #5 is the older jacket (looks striped on my little phone screen) no contest- so much better! There's something to be said for "the power of one"!

I don't see the two jackets as comparable in any way. One is a dressy statement jacket that can remix well with casual items. The other is a casual outdoor jacket for fall weather. I actually really like it on you, but only you can know if you will wear it enough.

If it were me (and I admit, I was also tempted by this one but did not go for it..) I would wear it outdoors in fall, and also possibly indoors as a cardi alternative in cold winter weather. I mean, think of Rachy and her puffers. Right?

Late to chime in, but FWIW:

I see both jackets as completely different like Carla, and not comparable. The old one is fab! The new one had potential, but I'm glad you are returning it. Fit seems off.

I agree with the majority re: fit, functionality, and personal style. It’s a cute piece but I think it wants to be styled in a ‘pretty preppy’ way, like with pointy flats, worn open with a shirt, sweater AND necklace, etc - not effortless, as someone aptly defined your style above. As a standalone topper over a simple outfit it’s not quite it.
