K/R: Jackets - YouLookFab Forum

Ok confession time (a pretty dumb one at that!): Jackets are new territory for me. And I *thought* I had bought a tux jacket until I realized it's not really a tux. Ok go on ... you all can have a laugh

So here we go! The background is that I am trying to add dressy pieces to my MOTG ultra casual wardrobe. My lifestyle mostly has casual events and nobody would bat an eyelid even if I turned up in bermudas and flip flops! But no ..... I am done doing that So, as I get older, I would like to bring in some class into my wardrobe without losing my playful casual edge that I love and don't wish to give up anytime in the near future!

I really wanted a tux. This white one from Mango. But when I went to the retail store here, they didn't have it. And none of their branches have it either (bummer!). Then I was looking around for a black tux. And I came across this one (which I thought was a tux?!!). The cool shoulder patches with the dressiness of the jacket sold me into it. It came home with me (pic 1/pic 2).

In my quest for a white jacket, I entered Zara. And I found this one. That one came along too (pic 3/4).

I am fine with the fits of both the jackets (shoulders and sleeves are perfect). And I will always wear them unbuttoned. I have not really styled the jackets, just threw them over today's outfit. My only question is .... do these jackets look flattering on my body type? The button stance, the waist, do they all look ok and are they hitting me at the correct spot? Do you think they could work with pencil skirts and fitted dresses? I am not very sure of these things .... did I mention I thought the black jacket was a tux? o_O Are these two a keep or return? I should also mention that I do not own a black (I have an almost black!) or a white jacket. Thanks if you read through this mountain of a post! And all suggestions are really appreciated!

I really like how both look and I think they'd be very versatile in how you could style them. Not sure from the photos, but when I compare the fit of the white one to the fit shown on the model picture, the shoulders look a bit more dropped on you (but the sleeve length looks right). So I can't tell if maybe it is a smidge too big?? (Might just be the camera angle). It doesn't look that way overall but that was literally the only fit thing I noticed that could be considered off (and honestly, I wouldn't have even noticed that if you hadn't provided the model photo for comparison).

Neel - I like them both. Very elegant but can swing dressy or casual which is a really good find. Shorter more cropped jackets usually work best with skirts and dresses so I would think these would do fine, but always good to try them. I am a jacket girl. they will up the style quotient on anything you wear. Hope you enjoy them. They look wonderful!!

I vote keep. Nothing ups the game of a casual MOTG wardrobe like jackets.

(And the ones with "North Face" on the back shoulder don't count.)

Leopardluxe- now since you said that, yes it does look a bit dropped which is weird because it actually fits very well! Hmmm .... Thanks for pointing that out. Will try it again and see if it bothers me.

I really like them both, but did you try the size down with the white one? It is hard to tell because there is a sort of glare around the shoulders where I am looking. Love your outfit and booties too!

Thanks shevia for weighing in. I wasn't looking for an XS, but I don't seem to remember seeing it on the rack. I tried S on and really liked the fit. Bought it and walked out. Lol! Oh well!

Neel, it might also just be that your shoulder structure is very different from the model's. If it seems to fit well everywhere else I wouldn't let it bother you. I seriously wouldn't have even noticed it if I wasn't comparing the two photos. So I wouldn't say it "looks" big on you. I say if you like the way it looks and feels then definitely keep it

Both look fine and will add structure to your casual outfits and look great with jeans and slim pants.

As far as pencil skirts it depends on the look you're going for. My personal preference is toward fitted waist-defining jackets which to my eye perfectly polish and complement a pencil skirt. Neither of these jackets are designed to do that, so you'll end up with a boxier shape on top which could look heavy/shapeless with skirts that stop at the knee or below the knee.

Even if these are not tuxedo jackets they both have that vibe. They look great on you. The slightly dropped shoulder of the white one doesn't bother me, especially for wearing casually. I vote keep and applaud you for adding jackets to your MOTG casual wardrobe.

I love both jackets, particularly the white one. Joy is right about them having a tux jacket vibe. You are a styling MOTG!

Leopardluxe - I tried it on again. And you are right, the shoulders seem to be a tad bigger .... 1/4 of an inch may be. The fit everywhere else is fine and a smaller size might be way too snug to be worn with full sleeved tops. So I think I would just live with it ... If that's the only issue that is

Day Vies - I might have to style these over my skirts and get some opinion I guess. This might decrease the amount of wears the jackets get. Hmmmm .... I am a pear ... A little boxy on top might be good. So crossing fingers here and will try some stylings in the next few days. Thanks Dayvies!

Thank you Joy and Windchime!! These would be the first two jackets (and the most expensive ones I have owned!) that I could probably take from casual brunch with kids to a cocktail party! So, a biiiigg step for me! Thanks for cheering me along

Neel, re. the "North Face" comment: I have noticed that a lot of moms in my town live in workout gear, but seem to think that as long as it's the "right" gear, it counts as style.

So even if it's a fleece jacket worn with yoga pants and athletic shoes, as long as the fleece jacket has an expensive brand name on it, there's an idea that this passes for actually getting dressed.

I'm applauding you for stepping things up with non-gear jackets.

Tee hee! Thanks April for clarifying that! I used to be in gear too and thought getting dressed was all that was needed for a busy mom. Oh mine weren't even expensive. Lol! Now I know better! So I am glad I am taking the right steps

I really REALLY like both of these on you Neel - they both have a great drape and vibe to them and will work well for both casual and dressy outfits.
