K/R: J Crew cardigan and dress

These are some of the last few things I ordered during the post-Christmas sales. I am going to split up the keep or return threads, one for each store. Please help me decide if any of these are worth keeping or not. Thanks for your input!

J Crew
1-4. Yvette metallic jacquard dress in midnight blue, size 6. This was the only size available (no 4 to compare). It fits pretty well up top and at the waist but is a tiny bit big around the hip area. It's probably a little too fancy to wear to work so it would have to be a party/special occasion/date dress. Is it worth keeping?

5-6. Jenna V neck cardigan in henna, size M. (Please excuse the clashing bright orange pants!) I had wanted to get a rust colored cardigan and returned an expensive Tory Burch one for this cheaper one ($47). It's supposedly cropped to wear with dresses but doesn't seem that cropped on me. At the time only the M was available. I think it's a bit big on me. Now the S is available but is full price at $79. I'm not sure if the proportions are right on me. Should I try the S or just forget it?

The dress is beautfiful on you. I could see that with a long pendant necklace. So simple and elegant. You could always have the sides taken in a bit. I'm not feeling the sweater. Are you *allowed* to return this and keep trying? I'm thinking a fly away style or cropped voluminous 50's (can't remember the term, sorry) the kind with an empire seam and gathers?

I love the dress - beautiful and classic. Have you tried the cardi with the dresses you had in mind? It does not look cropped and I've found that for Jcrew sweaters I can usually size down so you probably need the S at least.

Ditto - dress is gorgeous and if you have a need for another going out dress, keep. You can always have it narrowed if required.

The cardi doesn't look like the right cut for you. The shoulders are already snug and yet it isn't cropped; you need to keep looking.

The dress is beautiful; keep if you need another going-out dress. I think it would be even better sleeveless, do you?

I agree that the cardi isn't the right cut, and sizing down won't do it either.....

Thanks! I do like the dress a lot and it's unusual and a great color so I think I will keep. I will see if they let me exchange the M for the S at the sale price, otherwise I think I'll probably return. Sigh. Cardigans are so hard for me to figure out!!! I had several of them pre-YLF but gave a bunch away and now I'm finding I want to have a few but can't find the perfect fit!

Natalie, I don't know if you've tried Old Navy, but I just got a cardi from them that's just right - not too short, not too long, not too tight, etc. And it was only $10. Worth a shot anyway, right? It is a simple lightweight cotton, so not exactly a keep the cold out type of weight, but works to add a bit of color to an ensemble

The dress is beautiful on you- the question you need to ask yourself is whether you have enough occasions to warrant another dress that you can't wear to work.

The sweater would probably be better in the small. I think it would help a lot to see it styled the way you plan to wear it. If you took a picture with the small worn open over a dress we might all be saying "keep", but just buttoned up like that over pants it's "meh".

Gorgeous dress! It sounds like you'll be keeping it -- good! That little extra hip room might be nice for sitting because that fabric has no give.

Cardi is okay, but nothing special. But are cardis like that supposed to be special or simply add some color, interest, and warmth. . . I like your idea of trying to exchange for S.

As for cardis, perhaps you might like to try some of the open cardis? These buttoned up styles you've been trying just don't seem as flattering as they should be for you.

That dress looks seriously amazing on you. If you don't have a lot of opportunities for wearing fancy clothes out, then you need to make them You should wear lots of navy too. It's a great color on you.
