K/R Is it classic or not? - YouLookFab Forum

I need some seasoned eyes to help me determine if this spontaneous purchase was a crafty one or if I have my status goggles on. I am not normally a big label person, but I can appreciate quality items when I see them and try to incorporate the ones at my budget (comfort) level.
I found this at the Rack and almost did not try it on but thought I should just to eliminate it.
Not completely styled, but I tried it open sleeves down, sleeves rolled (gives a bit away), closed and rear (oh my) view. This is with a turtleneck underneath and I feel like the fit is fine. My concern is if this is truly a classic or not? I love the tomato red color (does it love me?). I like the midweight (our winters are generally not that cold for long). The lining is fun and impeccable. The price is more than I would normally spend for such an item (but really good), but if it's classic enough it is an investment and I would not feel badly.
I've asked all the Rack sales people (they were for it) and DH (he's on the fence only due to the price)
What say you oh wise and wonderful fabbers? All input is appreciated and in the end I will decide on my own, but sometimes one cannot see the real value through the shades of sales and other factors.

I think it's gorgeous on you! Do you have enough in the closet for it to play with -- since it's not a colour you are used to wearing?

To me it fits right in with your prep aesthetic and adds a fun punch of colour to winter blah. Those quilted coats are also super easy to wear for MOTG.

Hmmm. I'm on the fence about it, honestly. I want to love it because I can tell you really like it. I love the color. I'm not as in love with the styling BUT (and here's the big disclaimer) I have a bit of a poison eye for quilted items without waist shaping. I find them difficult to wear and feel like they add bulk to me and somehow that personal experience of them keeps me from seeing them objectively on others. So mark me down as a fence sitter.

ETA: And if your question really is just is this classic or not, then I'm not sitting on the fence. The answer is unreservedly "YES! Classic!" This is a iconic coat, by its original maker. The color makes it fun, but doesn't make it any less classic.

I love the colour, the quilting, and the back detail in particular. The fit looks good to me- is there enough room to layer underneath if need be?

I really like it on you, and I think it's an iconic enough piece that it won't date. It'll be totally easy to mix into your preppy wardrobe IMO.

I agree with Diana. This is one of those pieces that can become a work horse in a sporty/classic wardrobe, and you have it in a great colour and what appears to be really good fabrication. Didn't you recently get an amazing colour-block purse with red? Have you tried it with this jacket?

I have no idea what designer/brand it is but I think the jacket is a classic and fits you very nicely. I DON'T like warm reds but DO like this one on you.

Yes, it's a classic, and you have demonstrated your ability to make preppy look so very chic. My only question? I think an expensive coat lives and dies by the quality of the fabric and construction. Feeling a garment and even looking at it's insides should make it evident that this coat is far superior to, say, the zippered nylon Walmart version I have in my closet! That's what would close the deal for me!

This is a classic piece and in my opinion a classic color. I can see this piece lasting for years and looking fresh and current each year. So my vote is keep.

You are all very wise and I am leaning toward the keep (but I think you knew that). I appreciate all the comments, it can be helpful to have some unbiased outside help.
Suz - I have enough neutrals and as Runcarla so wisely remembers I have the Coach colorblock purse (have not taken it out with this yet but I did think of it immediately too) I think this will color work in both spring and fall?
K - appreciate your points, this has a little waist definition in the rear belt so I don't feel michelin like.
Shannon - there is room to layer a sweater, but not a blazer and sweater or blouse. This is probably fine since it's kind of a blazer itself and a lightweight so I wouldn't be overbundling.
Diana- I know right? I was giddy (I've only ever seen a few Burberry items at mine and usually not in a size I can fit into) It must be an older color as it was marked at $199 (and I had a $20 reward!!) It's still on the website at full price in a darker red. Happy Birthday (1 month early) to me.

BethAnn - the construction on this would make you cry. I almost want to wear it inside out - it's fully lined in the plaid and every seam has red bias tape binding. It even puts the Jones NY one I got at a consignment store last year to shame.

That tomato red will be a very versatile color, and I think you will enjoy this jacket. I like mine as the perfect jacket in the car in colder weather. Not too long, not too bulky, just right.

I think your touchy- feely response to it is very important, when combined with enough other boxes ticked off( a color you can use, good fit. That makes for a want- to- wear item. The fact that it is more for light layering is a plus, I think, because you'll wear it more often, as
you say, almost like a blazer and in season transitions.

Definitely spring and fall. I think it would be fun to try to combine it with some of your other colours, too -- even the oranges and corals and pinks. Just for fun, throw it together with stuff and see what results!

The color, the waist detail, the fit are great. I vote keep! I have a similar Barbour coat and it is a total workhorse for me during the fall and winter. Much easier to pull on over sweaters on casual days vs. a tailored coat.

The keeps are completely in the lead (mine included). It is not the right red for my Coach bag, but that's ok. This is called Pomegranate pink, but it's definitely an orangey red more than pink IRL.
