K/r: Is leg join (crotch) bunching part of the look?

I thought I’d go to Zara and see if they had some mom jeans/wedgie style jeans.

Photo 1: the zara 1975 line. It is a 99% cotton jean that is tight in the thighs and calves. No bunching at crotch, but not as current a look? I’m not sure!!

Photos 2-4: the zara mom jean. There is a lot of bunching at the leg join. I’m not sure whether it’s supposed to be part of the look. In person, my eyes were poisoned. But looking at the photo, it doesn’t look so bad...or maybe it does! what do you think?

I didn’t get either, but am considering them as they are only $45 (yay Zara!)

I did get the maroon top! Tres 90’s!

As a follow up question:

Photo 1 below is the size 42. Photo 2 is size 38.

I am thinking that 42 actually looks better (the rise is higher) but the backside needs ~2” inches off the waist.

What do you think is the best size?

Hmm, I think you’re right, something is off with the length of the rise.... but keep trying becauseI LOVE my pair of Zara mom jeans. The right pair is waiting for you.

The fit on the Mom jean is not right - I am not sure why, but there is too much fabric in the rise....

I like the first jean - I think both pairs look good. You have a lovely slim waist so I can that sizing up and altering could be a really good strategy.

I like #1 best too. The bunching up of fabric on #2 would bother me too. The maroon top is beautiful on you and looks great with this style of denim.

I also think the first pair looks better on you. Good question about the crotch bunching. I remember that I liked the bunching on my 90s pair of Levi's 501s. But the bunching was maybe less prominent. Maybe it's about the drape of the fabric.

I agree go with no bunching. I don’t think it “ adds” to the look even though it might be tolerated trend- wise. It usually means the fit is off. When I try on high-rise pleated pants, too much bunching is a warning sign.
I have a high hip to waist ratio and almost always have t take up the back waist. If it’s a doable alteration I always size for adequate stride length and hip ease.

I really love the first pair of jeans. I would definitely get them.

I don't know whether the second pair of jeans is supposed to fit like that. Maybe others know the answer.

I'm not sure about the sizing on pair 1. I guess it would depend on which pair is more comfortable, how both pairs look in the back (does one look too tight in the seat?), and whether they bag out after being worn for a couple of hours.

Ok so we are agreed then, that bunching is no good!

Unfrumped, what does a “high hip waist ratio” mean? I do feel like I need more back rise on most pants.

Gigi, Thank you. I think the smaller pair is more comfortable in the waist but the larger pair has more rise in the back and more room in the bum. But I think they’ll bag out. That said, I’d like to try a roomier jean. I think I may have convinced myself of the bigger pair!

If there is crotch bunching, I think the fit is off.....the rise might just be a little to long. If so, you might look like you have crotch drop when standing and bunching when sitting. I think the right pair for you is our there somewhere. Wait until you find a pair that looks great coming and going.

Not to be an old crank, but if you don't like the crotch bunching, then whether it's part of the "look" or not is irrelevant. Send those back and wear something that you enjoy.

Smuttiest, I mean ~ 10” -12 “ difference between waist and hip. So pants off the rack never will fit both. The rare exception is some types of wide or pleated pants where the hip is inherently roomy and waist runs narrow. Like my “ carrot” pants.
I agree about back rise. Mine also seems long. “ High rise “ is sometimes funny to me—“ who you talkin’ HIGH rise- these aren’t even close to my waist!” That’s why “ low rise” jeans and pants years were nigh impossible.

I'm a spanner, Smittie. I prefer the second pair of Mom Jeans - the ones that are bunching. That's the trendy look! But pass if you don't like it.

As far as the first pair goes - also fab. Either size is fine. Body con, and that's a look too.

Unfrumped, ah ok, I get it. Yes I have a long rise, more than 10”. High rises are barely even mid rise on me and low rise jeans were very difficult to fit and the back pockets were often on my leg as opposed to my seat.

Ah Angie, ok so I’m not crazy! You know, I really do like the roominess in the thigh and lower leg of the mom jeans. Maybe my eye will adjust in time to the baginess through the hip.

Of the two I also prefer the fit of the second pair. The looser legs go better with the fit of the hip.

I think the higher waist is the most eye catching thing about this style for me, and that kind of changes the fit overall.

I'm glad Angie chimed in, because I was thinking that the Mom jeans in photo 4 look great. With the other two photos, I was thinking it might just be the way you are standing, plus the weight of the denim. You can see that the knee has a fold, too, and yet we're not concerned about extra fabric at the knee. . .. I wasn't ready to discard them.

I like the mom jeans! I like the look of high waists better when there's some ease in the leg.

If the creasing at the crotch bothers you, one solution might be trying a size up to get a looser fit in the thigh, and then altering the waist. Or, just look elsewhere for a mom jean with slightly roomier upper thighs.

Smittie, YES. You were dead right. That roominness in the leg is very comfy, and high rises become a bit addictive (personally, I'm finding that).

I like both high rise silhouettes: with roomy fits and tight fits. Both KILLER on you.

Also high fiving Isabel, Sharan and La Ped.

LaP: I think think you’re on to something about sizing up.
I’m going to go to the mall (maybe after work tomorrow) and try out some larger sizes.

Thanks for the support Angie! I think I’m in the mood for a roomier fit, so I’ll have to do some more investigation on fit issues.

Smittie, good strategy. Try many pairs of high rise classic styles and see how you go. You ROCK that high rise in any cut.
