K/R: In-home pics of Madewell trench

I went back for the Madewell trench tonight - here are the pics at home with a good camera.

The better light reveals an almost paper bag quality at the waist where it is belted that the color doesn't help. I'm not sure if this is a dealbreaker for me or not. #5 and 6 shows my attempt to tie without buckling, but it does not stay tied... maybe because the belt is not long enough to do a proper knot?

Hubs' rating: "I'm indifferent, I guess."

I think I'm going to place an order for this paprika colored one in #7 and have a trenchcoat showdown (unless of course you vote the Madewell off the island right away). This one has all kinds of cool compartments to help thwart pickpockets... very Inspector Gadget.

Ooh, I like this on you, rae! Colour is really subdued and classically stylish. (The bunching is RATE-rumply, IMHO!) Is it S or XS? I think I'd ultimately prefer the paprika version, if you can get it, though!

I still love the colour and fit on you Rae. I do see what you mean about the belt being too short to tie though. Personally, that would kind of bug me because it would mean I'd always have to do up the buckle. The paprika colour is gorgeous.

I would love to see the paprika on you too but anything in any tone of red is a favourite of mine and you also look awesome in that colour. Colour looks good here but it's not real life...how do you feel?

When ds went to Italy some years ago in the middle/end of March it snowed. He, the walking furnace, said he didn't need a fleece but I seem to remember him coming home ill as well as were the rest of the gang he went with. All the girls said fleece they brought was definately needed.

Rae - I am not sure what the paperbag issue means and where it is. The fabric will crease as you belt the coat, is that what you mean?

The fact that the belt would not tie is a problem for me, I admit. Also, are you planning to button the trench all the way up like that?

Ok, I put in an order for the paprika. I think I would regret not giving it a shot.

Freckles, reds are a favorite of mine, too! I'm not sure about the color yet. My neutrals are usually black, gray, and rust, so this is new. I am also borrowing a puffer coat for the trip... weather seems unpredictable this time of year, so it could be almost warm or practically freezing.

Zap, the "paper bag" issue is in pic 3, the shot from the back. Since the material is stiff, the crinkles are like those of a paper bag. Since the color is also bag like, it just pops that image into my head. Was it you who suggested I try belting with a knot?

My wool trench I ended up wearing mostly open. The belt may well be an issue, because I don't think I'd bother buckling everything on the way out the door for a 20 minute drive. For travel, though, I would buckle the belt. I would mostly wear the collar as in photo 1, but I would do it all the way up for taking walks outside when traveling or going to outdoor shops at home.

Umm... I totally see your point now. You know, I actually happen to like a tad of scrunching at the waist but hey, I'm not bothered by crotch "whiskers" hence I live in a whole different planet. It could be unflattering... I'm not sure.

It could have been me who suggested the knot.

Looks good on you but I think the paprika will be even better! If I were to get a trench I think I'd go for the paprika too! Love that rust orange.

The Madewell trench looks pretty good but I kept thinking "if only it was more orange-ish or reddish!". So I am rooting for the paprika trench for now.

Slightly OT. Europe had a wave of unheard of cold this february . People skied on the frozen rivers and such. Now it's getting warmer but yeah, it's really unpredictable. Good for you bringing warm layers ( Even though a puffer seems a bit much, Italy is quite south)
About the trench, I like this one, but I'm intrigued about special gadget-like pockets. And yeah, they're worth as a tourist.

Quick thought this morning: You have dismissed black trenches all together, right?
I have tried many a trench. This is, by far, the best one that I've seen in the price range, in my humble, simple gal opinion. There is a magic about a black trench that will make you look very, very eurochic!!! IMO. I know we all want something different, that will stand out, but a black trench in a perfect fit, is something else. The coat has a more pronounced A line and a back vent. Those two features alone make it very flattering on us, ladies with natural peplum. If you wait until next wednesday, BR will have a 40% off one item promotion.

They have it in regular, tall and petite sizes. I own a small tall and a medium on this. The small I use on those days I don't need to layer, whereas the medium is great when I am wearing a blazer or heavy sweater. I did buy the two sizes on purpose, since I hate to have to size up for layering, therefore looking all baggy when I don't. They are not exactly the same design wise, since BR tweaks the design here and there every season.

ETA: Another thing. Just make sure that the lining on whatever trench you buy is a rayon or otherwise "shiny and silky like" fabric. Cotton linings are particularly problematic on trench coats, as they make the entire thing not fall or drape properly. I'm not sure why. I have one on soul sucking beige that is unwearable for that reason. The lining makes the coat cling to whatever I'm wearing.

...and holy cow, that was no quick thought.

I think it looks fab! The fit looks perfect, and I love the color. I prefer trenches worn open, but it looks good all buttoned up too. The paprika looks delish....

Laura and Makrame, I think I feel the same. I am not prancing around in it like I never want to take it off... I think the color was more flattering in my cellphone pics. A little more brown/rust-ish.

Anya, thanks for the weather news! The puffer probably IS too much but, as a wimp in the cold, I'd rather be prepared.

Zap, I'm definitely against black, unfortunately, though I was tempted to try Suz's black trench, too. My wool coat is already black, and I have a long furry one that is also black (I'd bring that with me, but fur + wet = yuck). The tip about cotton lining is GREAT... the Madewell trench is lined in cotton, so glad you mentioned that.

Found a long review and more pics of the paprika trench, even though I probably should have done that *before* ordering... oops.

Maybe you need two good trenches? Are both the gold and paprika out of the question? I have both black and red. It is useful to have an option. When I am wearing black pants, I don't always want to wear a black trench on top.

I'm not loving this color with your skintone, even though I really want to. Sorry! Fingers crossed on the paprika. Suz's black trench would be FIERCE on you, but IKWYM about not wanting all of your coats to be black. But still, you look so good in black! Lucky.

In all honesty, if I was the one going thru this, Angie's comment above would just about wrap it up for me. I wonder if she sees the cotton lining as a problem. Mine is a disaster because of it. A tailor diagnosed the problem for me.
I love the inspector gadget coat... love, LOVE!

The scottvest jacket is so cool and the nerd in me really wants you to try it, but I have a hard time believing that something like this would be as flattering as a normal trench coat.

I might be in the minority, but I really like the madewell coat best. The golden brown color is very flattering, but still has the classic integrity of a tan trench coat. That's a rare combination. And the fit is spot on. I vote keep!
