K/R Gap Real Skinny Black Trousers (ETA more pictures for Shevia, etc)

I got the first of two Gap orders I put in last week - the other order is the black Mongolian shearling vest, which I will post once I receive.

But on to today's order - I ordered mid rise skinny jeans and two sizes of the black real skinny trousers. The mid rise skinny jeans were so horrendous on me I shall not be posting pics. I'm unsure if going up a size will help as the fit just seemed "off".

What I am showing you is the smaller size of the real skinny black trousers. These are my possibility of "cigarette" trousers. I had already tried the BR Martin skinny black trousers but they did not work for me.

I have cuffed the trousers about 3 inches inside the leg as they are too long. The fit is very comfortable - not too tight, not too loose. Rise is about right and they sit quite comfortably. I know black doesn't photograph well but hopefully these give you enough of a view to help me determine keep or return.

I haven't really styled other than putting on a blouse and a pair of shoes.

ETA: I've added some incredibly humiliating pictures to hopefully show the pants and fit a bit better. As per Shevia's suggestion further down, I've rolled them more underneath at the hem to make them shorter and added lower contrast shoes. Please excuse the stage of undress and I will now slink away in my embarrassment.

It is hard to tell. I think they need to be a bit shorter because I am seeing a bit of bunching below the knee and believe the cigarette pant should fall smoothly. The fit in the derriere area looks good.

I could be wrong, but these appear too big Shannon, or am I seeing things? Too bad about the mid rise skinnies, it takes work to find the right pair!

I tried these pants too Shannon, and they don't drape do they? Even if they were shorter, the material is too thick and kind of crisp. They look good to me, almost like a slim straight leg (duh, which would be cigarette pants, right)? I'll be interested to see what Angie says.

Shannon, yes black is a shocker to photograph:) I like the look of these, but I am also wondering if you need to size down? I understand that some of the bunching on the leg will disappear when hemmed correctly but am I seeing some fullness (excess fabric) between the hig and thigh area? I struggle with this issue when I am looking for pants so I am highly sensitive to it.

these are my go to pants all winter long. I like them on you. The bunching does not bother me. will have to see how the experts weigh in!

Shannon, I own a pair of these pants! Anyway - they look a bit larger on you. The leg is usually a bit narrower and they almost look kind of bootcut. Also, the waistline looks looser and there are more loose diagonal wrinkles around the bum area - which means that there's way too much fabric to go around the curve.

I'm not so keen on my current black always skinnies these days because of the diagonal bum wrinkles. Perhaps try a size smaller and see how that looks/feels? I'm going to be doing the same sometime.

Thank you for your responses - just so you know, I would not be able to do these up around my mid section if I were to size down. See this is the problem with my excess belly shape - to fit comfortably around my stomach, there can sometimes be more fabric in the hips and thighs. But if I were to size down to fit those areas more snugly, the pants are too tight around my mid section.

I think that the shoes are creating confusion. They do look more baggy around the legs than I would want for skinny pants (unless that is what you want), but I think the contrasting shoes are confusing things. In other words, please try them on with low contrast shoes and tuck under the length to make them a bit shorter, because the overall fit seems good.

I have these pants. I think trying them with another shoe, as Shevia suggests, might be helpful, and making sure you've made them short enough. It's so hard to tell with black.

I like these pants a lot for myself except they are cat hair magnets.

@Shannon I totally feel you on the belly shape thing. I have the exact same problem! This is why I never wore pants for so long! It wasn't until I changed my diet and lost quite a bit of belly fat when I can *almost* wear pants comfortably.

I think we would be in the same situation with these pants then. The current Skinnies that I have are comfortable on the waist - but yeah - the diagonal horizontal wrinkles are just there

First off, do not be embarrassed -- I can appreciate your challenge in balancing the tummy demands vs. seat and leg!

Fixing the length has worked for me! They look way better now!

I think they look better in the newer pics, but I wonder a little bit about the slight "billowing" (for lack of a better word) right about the knees. Maybe it's because they are still a bit long, or maybe it's because the fabric is stiff? Ideally you'd get a nice sleek-but-not-tight fit, all the way down the leg line.

Pictures just for me! You have absolutely nothing to be ashamed about in those pictures. I think the side and back look great and the front looks pretty darn good as well but I just can't tell if they are too baggy or perfect. This is a job for Angie! (But I say keep!)

I feel your pain. Every time I try on pants. And losing weight has not helped at all. I keep having the same problem, just in smaller sizes. Pants are not made for our shape, I'm afraid. Or very, very few of them.

That's all I have to offer: commiseration. This is a listen and learn thread for me.

Having said that, I did notice that Levi's has come out with jeans for rectangles (didn't have time to check them out) and Fashion Bug (similar to Reitman's) in the States offers their basic black pants and sometimes a couple of others in alternate silhouettes. Let's keep our eyes open for each other, okay? There aren't enough options to fill out a wardrobe yet, but what I can find, I will take.

Shannon, NO reason for shame. You look wonderful. Shortening them has really helped the situation to my eye. And it is possible that they have to be shorter still. I just don't know. Tomorrow I will try mine on again and take a look to see how long I made them. I remember I had some inner debates about it at the time and it was for something like this reason.

Thanks for the input everyone. I don't think these are the right trouser for my shape.

In fact, after trying on the mid rise skinnies and these black skinnies, I'm not sure about the skinny shaped trouser on me AT ALL. I think straight leg, bootcut, flare and wider legged dress trousers are probably a better shape on me as the leg helps to balance out the tummy. Perfect example are my espresso Esprit trousers - perfect fit and much more flattering.

I couldn't fill out the legs of these pants either. If I sized down, I couldn't button or zip. Where are those baggy pants we wore in the 80's? Those were so awesome. I'm hoping the slouchy trousers trend moves us in that direction. Yes indeed, onward!

Shannon they definitely look better with the other shoe as the height is allowing the leg to fall better. I have exactly the same challenge. pants do up around my tummy but too much fabric around the thighs. I have a suggestion though but I will pm you:)

I think you need to size down in the GAP Really Skinny pants, imo. I realize you're thinking they won't fit around the waist - but they probably will, because they do seem to stretch a wee bit, while still managing to maintain their overall shape. To my eye, these are too big for you Shannon.

Also - I don't remember if these come in a so-called 'ankle' length, but if they do, the 'ankle' length might be worth trying. I got the regular length and at first they almost seemed like they were too long, but after seeing Angie's post with her 'cigarette pants' I decided to try these as pants that could be worn in some other way than just tucked into tall boots - voila - they were not too long and had just enough of that scrunch to work nicely.

Um - I think that these will be *fab* on you, but that you might need to size down one more size. Just for the record, when I first bought these, I felt all exposed and like they were almost painted on or something - but over time, they've relaxed a bit (or maybe I have?).

I know it's a royal hassle, but would you consider a size down? Just in the interest of being patient, picky and persistent?

Meanwhile, I can't speak to the cat-hair problem, since I have a black labrador retriever and his fur matches the pants purr-fectly.
