K/R: Gap plaid coat

I've been tempted by the oversized coat trends, but not having much luck as I need a petite, I don't want another black coat, and I don't look good in camel.

I ordered this plaid GAP coat on a whim. It's a SP. What do you all think? Keep or return?

The sleeves would have to be hemmed as they are about an inch or two too long. Not sure about the fit in the shoulders-- is it supposed to be this way? I definitely want a coat that can fit over blazers. (I've not had a coat that could fit over blazers in years and years and years). And this one ticks that box -- it fits beautifully over a suit jacket. Plus I think if I sized down then it wouldn't look as oversized -- and might not even button....

What do you think of the plaid? Is it working or fighting? Is it just too much for my frame?

Ack - I wanted this coat last week and had to force myself to leave the store . I love the oversize cocoon -yet -tailored effect but I absolutely do not need another coat nor could I justify it. But it was so inexpensive! Get it !!

I'm a big fan of Gap. This coat is different and interesting. It fits you well given that it is supposed to be somewhat oversized. I say keep it.

Lisa, I also don't need another coat though I could justify this one as it would be the only coat in my closet that comfortably fits over a suit jacket, without feeling like I'm stuffed into a sausage casing!

Okay to be fair I did also add a LOFT navy peacoat this season, and it can work over blazers, but it's a lot shorter. And not as warm as this one is.

Are the pockets sitting where they should? I obsess that because the sleeves are an inch or two too long (they're rolled in the photos) that the pockets and pattern and such should also be hitting 1-2 inches up. But pretty sure the next size down wouldn't button or fit over a blazer.

I like it and it sounds like something you could use. The plaid is big but it goes with the oversized design.

I feel like it may be just a *little* big (maybe it’s the pocket placement?), but it’s the look, so I say go with it. Altering the sleeves will help. Great with your white booties. I love that plaid and would be tempted myself if I didn’t already have an embarrassmemt of coats.

Sounds like the fit/cut of this coat really fills a wardrobe hole (coat for wearing over blazers). But does it come in other colors? This reads very black to me and you say you don’t want another black coat...

From what I can make out from these pics, the size looks dead right. KILLER with a sleeve hem. Make sure you're okay with the position of the pockets. They are not side entry. So not the type pf pocket you easily put your hands in when its cold, IYKWIM,

It seems to me that it's pretty important to have a coat that works over blazers in a cold climate like yours. I think this looks great on you. The shoulders look a tiny bit big but I think that's perfectly ok especially if it gives some room for layering over a blazer or thick sweater. The overall proportions look great. And yes, shorten the sleeves, the right sleeve length makes a huge difference.

I am now debating about not having the sleeves shortened. The reason: when I put a blazer underneath, the sleeves are the right length! I have even tried this coat over my leather moto and it fits great, still buttons, doesn't feel or look any bulkier, etc. So maybe I'll reserve this coat for wearing over toppers and keep the sleeves long? Thoughts?

Also it's simply warmer to have the sleeves so long....

I'm excited to have a coat like this as it opens up new fashion doors for the winter! I always get bored by February of living in cardigans and sweaters and I miss my toppers!

It’s reasonable to wear it awhile as- is and see what you think, can always do later if you find the length annoying vs. no problem, or wear coat a lot more without toppers than you thought, or maybe decide if you want just the tiniest smidge shorter.

Perfect! And I was going to say the same as MsMaven - the plaid is aligned and when I saw this on the Gap page a while ago I thought it looked expensive, like it could be from a much higher end store.

Such a great plaid! I've been looking at this one too, as I'd love a cocoon coat for layering purposes.

How is the fabric? Does it attract a lot of fuzz/lint? I've had bad luck with wool-poly blends in the past because they can be pet hair magnets, but I'm so tempted and it seems like a plaid that would do a good job hiding anything it picks up...

La Pedestrienne, no it doesn't attract fuzz or lint, at least so far so good. And yes I think it would hide pet hair very well -- if not because of the fabric, because of the pattern. I do think the quality is pretty good for the price point -- but it's by no means a super high quality piece.

For me it's just right for the price point and it's fun and on trend so I can experiment with this style and see how I like it, as normally I'm into much more tailored coats. And of course my limit is always "must be petite" which applies ever more so with coats this length. Add on top of that I really did not want another black coat, and camel doesn't favor me. This one while neutral seemed different with the grey/white plaid pattern -- AND came in petites.

Be forewarned it's rather thick. That means it truly is warm. Even warmer with a blazer under it. I have not yet felt the need to drag out my puffer coats this season, and we've been hovering around high 30s-40s.

The LOFT navy peacoat (shown in other thread) is very nice as well, particularly for the price! It is lighter in weight and reminds me of a nice cashmere coat, but of course it is not. I can also put a blazer under it but it's a bit bulky feeling when I do. It's also not as warm as this GAP coat. But it was a great bargain as well.

I keep posting, sorry. La Pedestrienne, I am not sure if this is a cocoon coat? I have tried the Jcrew cocoon and other styles and they fit funny on me. It's not just the neckline which totally doesn't work for me, it's how they grab in the lower body? This one doesn't. It's straight down rather than tapered in.

Oh and for Angie: I have totally made my peace with the top pockets, on this and on the green anorak I bought at NAS (which by the way I LOVE LOVE LOVE despite early reservations! Was a real workhorse this fall as it's been so rainy). You never cease to amaze me how you remember all our preferences!
