K/R Gap Academy Blazer - YouLookFab Forum

I was in Gap yesterday and found this navy Academy blazer on the clearance rack. The fabric is soft and comfortable; the sleeves are long enough, even though it's not a tall, and I LOVE the arm patches! (So does DH.) I would wear it with jeans, dress pants, and skirts. I have two other blazers--one is grey ponte knit and the other is fuchsia velvet. Someday I plan to add a black and a white blazer, when I find the right ones. I particularly envision eventually finding a really sleek, contemporary white blazer. . . Meanwhile, does this navy Gap blazer fit okay? Is it on trend enough to take me through the next few years, or should I keep looking?

Another consideration--should I even add this third blazer or should I look at other toppers for spring? I don't yet own a moto jacket and was in Gap hoping to try on the tweed one which Angie recommended recently. It wasn't in the store yet, which is why I ended up perusing the clearance rack!

Or should I keep this blazer AND also add a different type of spring topper? I'm still in the wardrobe building phase.

Your wisdom is appreciated.

Windchime, I'm not sure about the fit. Perhaps it won't matter if you scrunch the sleeves, but they look a bit short to me. Also, it looks a bit wide through the waist. Did you get any photos with the jacket unbuttoned? Cute patches!

I ordered that blazer in three colors and returned it because that two-button style is looking frumpy to me these days. One button, or a lower-stance two-button, looks more modern to me.

Marmee--that is exactly the kind of feedback that is immensely helpful to me as I learn about proper fit. So I would be better off with even more sleeve length and a bit more fitted waist.

MaryK--if this style of blazer is looking frumpy to you, you wonderfully stylish woman, then that's enough for me! Back it goes.

I'm with the other ladies. The stance is a bit too high for you, and the waist isn't nipped in quite as much as I would like on a blazer that length. Windchime, at the moment, blazers are the hardest thing for me to get right with my shape. My waist is very high, so the super low stance in fashion today looks very strange on me. My widest part also happens to be the exact spot where many blazers hit today. Trial and error and error and error here. Frustrating, but I will eventually find one that fits me correctly. Don't give up.

I am a big fan of blazers and vote yes to owning a collection. However, this one is not a 10 on you to my eye. In addition to the issues others already covered, I think the sleeves are too short. I prefer mine to hit at the lower wrist and preferably a little on the thumb bone, this way you don't see much wrist when sitting at the computer.

Yeah -- it's a bit of a shrunken style but this one looks both too small and too big. I'll bet the tall sizing would be better for you, but at the same time, it's on the "getting dated" side, so since you're just building a closet, maybe go for something a little fresher?

Carter--does "stance" refer to where the bottom of the blazer is?
I'm smiling at "trial and error and error and error" and know exactly what you mean. I'm not yet frustrated about a blazer, and I think I'm going to try some other types of toppers, which actually was Plan A. I got sidetracked by the clearance rack. Good luck with your blazer hunting; it will be worth it when you score the right one!

Stance is where the lapel ends at the top button. I get side tracked by clearance racks too...all the time!

I think this is meant to be a "schoolboy" type blazer, with the two buttons and boxy fit. I do think it would look better with jeans or casual pants. I'm not loving it on you - I think the sleeves are a tad short. The two button style might be getting dated - hence it's appearance on the clearance rack.

Thanks, Lisa, you're absolutely right that the sleeves would ideally be longer. I can see that now. One reason I like warm weather clothes is that sleeve lengths become a non issue!

Suz--yep, it's going back and I'll keep looking. Six months ago, pre-YLF for me, I would have kept this and not questioned it. So my standards and ideas are starting to change--yay!

Carter-- so glad you saw my question and answered it--thanks! I just added a new style term to my vocabulary.

Karie--based on a recent YLF thread about blazers--I don't remember who posted it--I wondered if this blazer might date quickly or already be out of date. You have confirmed my doubt. Thanks for explaining about schoolboy blazers; makes perfect sense!

I see you decided to return already - I think it is a good decision.
Definitely try tall sizes at Gap: I find they make all the difference for me.

It does look a bit short and high stanced to me too. The Academy blazer works on me, so it makes sense that it would be too short on many others, since I have the world's shortest waist.

Funny, I dropped off this exact blazer at the UPS Store yesterday as an online return! And for many of the reasons above: It seemed to bag around the waist and wrinkle strangely (as if the hip was too low -- could I be even shorter-waisted than Diana?). Also it would have be a weekend blazer for me, and I don't need any more of those.

I find it hard to believe that it's actually dated, since Gap has several blazers currently for sale similar to this one. But it doesn't fit you as well as it should.

Without reading the others to be influenced, I do not think the jacket is long enough on your torso. I think it should come a bit lower to get the proper fit.

I would return.
