K/r: free people wine peplum jacket

This is the same jacket Brooklyn bought recently. I had to try it as the style is right up my alley plus I've been looking for a wine jacket for ages. Anyway it was waiting for me when I got back from my holiday this morning.

It's super comfy and the shoulders/sleeves fit well. The fabric is thicker than I expected which lends some nice structure and means it can be worn as light outerwear in mild weather as well as as a blazer alternative in colder temps. It's also the proper length for me (many jackets are too long in the torso).

What do you guys think of the ruffle placement though? Is it too high/flared and does it accentuate my wisest part (high hip)? Brooklyn is taller than me so it hits higher up on her.
ETA: Brooklyn, if you see this, did the ruffle on yours relax at all? It flares out a lot right now but I wonder if it will relax down with wear.

It also has no closure. I tried holding it closed and I actually like how it looks so if I keep I may consider getting the tailor to add a buttonhole. This would make it better as outerwear too.

ETA: added a couple of pics with a skirt+shorter top and with it held closed (how it would look if I had a buttonhole added).

This is cute and I don't think it hits at an unflattering length. I vote keep!

I would be curious about the length with a skirt, which tends to have a higher waist. I'm very long through the torso, so sensitive about where jackets and peplums fall, so this may be coloring my judgement. In some of the shots it looks shorter than others. With the jeans, I would also play with the length of the top below the jacket (i.e. Shorter). I do not see any concern with it being unflattering to your waist or hip. Love the color.

Definitely try it styled up in a few ways, Diana -- that will also give it time to "relax" a bit if that is going to occur. I like what I'm seeing so far. It's really right up your alley and the colour's fab.

I got very excited when I first saw the pics in the FP site (before looking at yours). You know I love me a romantic jacket, and there's a lot of positives to this one: the sleeve detailing, and yes, the peplum in the back. I immediately thought about ordering one for myself!

But for me, personally, I'm not sure now. I love the back, actually, but it's the cut in the front that I find a bit strange. Not just on you, Diana. It is definitely a unique item, so obviously YMMV.

Delurked, good idea to try with a skirt. I just added a couple of photos with a skirt and shorter top. I'd be unlikely to go much shorter or tucked for the top as I'm the opposite of you and very short-waisted. I also never, ever tuck anything.

Nancy, I think I know what you mean about the front. The fabric is quite thick and the ruffle/collar is double layered so it is stiffer and poofs out quite a bit. I'm still undecided about whethe that's interestingly dramatic or just awkward looking.... I did also just post a photo of how it would look if I had a buttonhole added to close it - that does rein in the poofiness a lot.

I like it! It seems very 'you'.

I like it a lot, particularly the color. From what you have said about the material, I doubt whether the ruffles will relax but I like them as is. The front is very dramatic and you need to be comfortable with that.

Heh I just noticed that the sleeves arrived cuffed and uncuffed they are super long (even for me and my penchant for looong sleeves, lol). But given that I didn't even notice the cuffing, I think it's fine to just keep them cuffed.

I think you are having the same debate as I had! I really like the peplum effect at the back but am still not sure about how I feel about it (on me) at the sides. It's dramatic. Like you, I wondered whether the ruffles would settle down with wear. Given that it's cotton, I suspect that could happen. In the end I decided that I could have the 2 side ruffles tailored (nipped in a little), if I decided (after a few wears) that I did not like the poofiness. I felt the other attributes: colour, fabric, military styling, fit and price, were too hard to pass up. Because it's hot here, I haven't been able to wear it yet. But I am still feeling keen. And even keener when I see it on you!
It looks good on you. I don't see any flattery issues at all. I prefer it open (but I get the practicality argument for having a closure). I really like it with the skirt and would love to see it with one of your tube skirts and boots.

I like it worn open and it looks like your style. The ruffles look like they stand out too much in #7, but they may relax in time.

The colour is gorgeous and very flattering. I love the romantic meets military style of the jacket. I don't think it accents your widest part. I am always sensitive to this issue when I buy jackets and toppers. The flounces of the jacket might settle down. They look softer on the Free People model's jacket.
The jacket is certainly on trend. I could see wearing it with jeans and skirts. Very versatile.

Brooklyn, I'm glad you weighed in! I think we are definitely on the same page about this jacket! All your pros are mine too. And that's a good point about tailoring the ruffle if we feel like it's too much. I'll definitely try it with my tube skirts!

Style Fan, yes I noticed that about the jacket on the model too, because of the way it looked on her I assumed it was a softer, thinner fabric. I actually prefer the thicker fabric, I just hope the ruffle softens a little. But who knows what they did to the photo.... the color is different too, darker and more purply, which is a plus for me!

I just returned this one, Diana, because it was a little large on me and because the lack of a closure was a dealbreaker. It didn't occur to me to hack it with a buttonhole!

In my FP order, I also had this long one in the blue color https://www.freepeople.com/sho.....ry-jacket/ , which also got returned for being too big and having no closure. I was so tempted to keep it and have a zipper added down the front so I could wear it as a coat dress with boots. It kind of swallowed me up, though, and I didn't want to risk getting stuck with it (and the tailoring bill) if adding the zipper didn't actually work.

It would have been so cool to have a unique piece, though.
