K/R: Eileen Fisher booties

The Eileen Fisher booties have finally arrived (after a long backorder and a shipping mishap). They are comfy. The heel is just a smidge over 3" but the platform puts them back into my safe range. The material is a textured nubuck, so it would not be super good for wet weather, but that's not a dealbreaker. I would probably not be wearing my bootcuts and trousers in wet weather anyway. I really like the heel shape, it reminds me of the Rag&Bone booties (which are too high a heel for me).

So, I have tried styling them in various ways. With bootcuts, with skinnies (tucked and rolled) and with a skirt. It is imperative that they work with the bootcuts since I need a 3" heel to wear under this pair and under my grey trousers. Also, please don't judge the skirt look based on contrast between bare legs and boots, since I'd likely wear tights IRL with these.

Last photo is my dead platform clog booties they would be replacing.

So what do you think? Keep or return? (PS - I am not interested in other colors, and I don't even know if they make them, so please don't suggest a different color. I like me my black boots.)

I like them a lot, Diana. The scale and shape looks really good for you. If they are comfy, I vote keep!

I really like them with everything here! The ankle opening is good for you, too. Another keep vote from me - it's tough to find an edgy platform that puts the foot angle at below 3". Most of them take 4+ back down to 3.

I'm not sure, Diana. They look very chunky. Almost too chunky. That is not the way fashion is moving - not that that should matter because you march to the beat of your own style drum.

I'm just not convinced yet, and I I hope you can appreciate my honesty. Something looks off, and I can't pin point what.

So, responding before I read the otehrs so as not to be biased

I am not really sure I like them. To be maybe too honest, they just dont wow me or feel all that arty, which I expect from EF. I sort of feel like they are similar to some Reikers I have seen, and those are very comfy shoes.

Question is, do you love them? Are you excited to wear them?

I think they work with the bootcuts because they don't show, so it's mostly heel height that matters.
I agree with Angie that the boots look too high-volume for your feet--not just flower-pot, although there's that problem--I haven't solved it so not judging too much there--I think almost ALL booties shown on YLF are too wide around the shaft-- but too much volume over the whole vamp and maybe sides.
If boots are super hard for you to fit in comfy versions, these may be the ones for you, but in terms of the eyeball test they look too "big".

I like them. I love the shape and the texture of the material. But agree with others that they are chunky, and almost have a retro feel. They seem to tick a lot of your boxes, which is important. Then again hunting for PPP is fun too!

I like everything except the heel. The angle of the heel looks off or wrong somehow. Everything else I love!

Hmm, lots of differing viewpoints. I find it interesting that there are both yays and nays based on the proportion/heft.

Angie, I always appreciate your honesty! To your point, I'm not particularly concerned about being fashion forward or super trendy, especially with footwear. If the trends continue to go more delicate, I'll probably sit it out to be honest. The other thing is that I'm willing to sacrifice some flattery/trendiness for the 3" heel, because the truth is that I don't think I can ever wear a 3" heel sans chunky platform. I am curious to know what you think might be off here though!

Thistle, I have and like many pairs of comfort shoes. So I don't really mind. I do think the heel is what makes these arty though; it looks architectural to me, which is someplace I'd like my style to go (more sophisticated and urban.)

Unfrumped, that's interesting that you think they are too high volume for my feet. I actually think (and yes I am aware this may be just my neuroses talking, but still...) that my feet/ankles are too delicate for the rest of my frame, so I like to add visual weight to them with chunky shoes. These are also far less flowerpotty than the vast majority of booties on me (if you want a laugh, look up the old post where I tried on the blue report marks).

They have the same shape and base. I thought the crisscross straps would make them less versatile, but maybe it breaks up the block of black for those who find it an issue?

You know what they're replacing and what you're wearing them with--you've thought this out.

Black is your signature.

To my eye, you have the stature and attitude for a chunkier shoe and you don't much care whether it is of the moment.

But chunky doesn't really describe the shoe to me. There's a touch of tough and of arty and of graceful and of rebel. I quite like the proportions of the shoe itself and the way its lines relate.

They do contrast with a delicate ankle, but your argument for that makes sense to me, and with tights there will be even less contrast.

You aren't complaining or fretting about anything yourself, only explaining all the reasons why these work for you.

I vote a big keep. As in, why not?

I love them but I have a soft spot for chunky shoes. I think they look especially fab with your bootcuts.

Thanks for being a sport, Diana. And I think I know what it is - that next cuppa woke me up. It's that side view with the ultra heavy heel that looks off to my eye - the heel is too chunky for the rest of the boot. I do like the fit and view from the front. The ankle gap from the side would have worked with less chunky heels. But all the gap does is make your foot drown in the heel. It's better when you wear full length jeans.

Anyway, FWIW, that's my opinion. Of course, as always you are welcome to toss my opinion into the sea. There are never any hard feelings at all. xo

It's interesting you don't love the heel, Angie, it's what I like best about these. I am a sucker for those kinds of heels.

Interesting. I think I'm in IK's camp here (sorry Angie). The heel sold me on these too, because I think it takes them out of comfort shoe land into edgy shoe land. I love the sharp angle.

I have a suspicion the ankle gap would be less if I sized down half a size. They are a wee bit big (but note that I am not wearing socks or my orthotics in these photos, so it will be less so once I have those). However, I am not going to do that because I have toe crushing issues and I prefer to buy my closed toe shoes slightly big to get the extra length in the toes.

I am on Team Chunky and Stompy so I really love these boots, esp. the heel shape. They do look a bit heavy in profile, but I'm wondering if that is because we see them against your bare legs. With tights I have a feeling that the heaviness would disappear. I love that these feel refined without being delicate or girly IYKWIM.

You got the wide stripe skirt!!! I missed it - woo-hoo! Told you it is a magic skirt which looks great on ALL bodies!
As for the booties I liked the overall look from the front but they also looked too clunky from the side. But again, this is my feeling and if you are happy with the visual weight of them I think they may be keepers.

To be honest, I wish Bloomies still had them and were still running their sale deal. Una's boots didn't work for me, and now that I know your ankle measurements, I'm drooling over the wide, steady, high, platformed heel for hight and comfort, too.

Although I do work in POV/Narrative and a lot of our clients are also NYDJ clients, so I am not always chasing the fashion dragon these days. My eye has shifted a little in my time in this role.

Looking through your post and photos, my thoughts are: they are a perfect replacement for your clog booties! To me they look more refined, hip, sophisticated, and yet they still have the heft and platform you like, and they'll go with the same clothes you're wanting them for. I think they are great with the jeans, but when I got to the photos with the tube skirt, my reaction was simply, "Sold!" I actually think Eileen Fisher hit it out of the park with these. Comfort, but not boring. Spray 'em and they'll be fine for wet weather.
