Hmm, interesting - the vote seems to be split pretty evenly!
I think enough people have weighed in now that I can tell you that the one I prefer is #1. As several of you have mentioned, this pair is much more my style. They are also much more comfortable - the Melins are a bit tight over the toes but have excess room in the instep (I have narrow heels and low insteps but the front of my foot is more like a medium width, plus I have a bunion on one foot) and I know patent does not stretch much. The Everybodys are very comfy to start with, and the leather (regular leather, not patent) is really soft.
The other reason that I don't like the Melins for me is that, while I like the way they look from the side and under pants, I HATE the way they look from the front with a skirt. They hit right at the narrowest point of my ankle (right above the bone) and since the top is a straight horizontal line, I think that it emphasizes the big difference in width between my calf and my ankle (FWIW, my calf is almost twice the circumference of my ankle). I realize that this is something that I'm probably overly sensitive about. That said, I much prefer how the ankle of the first pair looks with the higher sides and lower center, and I think it makes my leg look more proportional.
Anyway, I'm glad nobody seems to hate the first pair, since I'm pretty sure I'm keeping them.
ETA: Also, the everybodys will be more versatile for me, as they will work with skirts and under pants, and I think I can tuck skinnies into them as well so long as I wear matching socks.
