K/R deconstructed skirt - YouLookFab Forum

I got this Theory skirt a couple of weeks ago at the Rack on deep discount and then got busy and forgot about it! I tried it on with various tops in these photos but think I like it best with a somewhat cropped length.

I love the style, and I like the color, but I wonder if it is JFE? It’s a size bigger than my usual so there is some room in the waist but it has some stretch so it seems to work anyway. It’s not the drapiest fabric ever, so I’m not sure it photographs well. It’s very lightweight, which is nice for summer. I really enjoyed my summer dresses and skirts this year so it would be nice to add another interesting, casual midi length to my wardrobe. It was a good price for Theory but still not a cheapy $20 item so I don’t want to keep it unless it gets some favorable feedback. I think I like it best with the black top.

You can see my struggle with whether to tuck or untuck tops with these higher waists. I feel like there is a very small sweet spot for tops to end with this skirt. But I welcome your eyes on this. What do you think?

Okay, I'll be first - I have to admit it's not my fav. Maybe it's just too casual or something, but I'm just not sure I like it. I feel like it doesn't match your usual level of style I guess.

Okay, I'll be second. I looked at this when you posted, and didn't want to be negative, which I often seem to be. But.....I'm not in love with it on you. Something is off. Too much skirt, maybe. and looks a bit fussy for a casual skirt.

My fave is the second floral top, then the black one then the white one with the knot. Afraid I don't like them tucked. It's a great skirt!

I think it's clear from the pictures that the fit is indeed off. Tailoring it would probably be risky. I think you can (and have) done better!

I love the hem on the skirt, but there's something odd with the top of it. It's the type of flaw that makes me think there was a reason this ended up at the Rack. But, the untucked tops cover it- of those, I like #1 and #6.

I love the idea of this skirt but I agree the fit is slightly off. Looking at the tucked photos, I suspect you’re having the same problem I always have where the waist wants to ride up higher but then the extra fabric there makes it bunch funny.

The blue top works best to my eye proportions wise, but i agree with the others. Its not as good as the black and white skirt etc. Did you notice moto leggings in finds btw? I know you were hunting some!

You look so fab in all your usual wardrobe Janet,why struggle with something that isn’t quite working.l agree with you ,it’s where th e waistline hits youIt doesn’t work with tucking a top in,too much skirt,shortens your top half too much ,but leaving it loose obscures your waist and killer curves which again is not flattering.

I’ll join in the crowd. I prefer many of your other wardrobe items over this one. I like the idea of a skirt like this though.

I see why you love the style, it's fab, but the fit doesn't translate to my eye. I definitely prefer it with a tucked top but I'm not sure I'd keep it because it just seems like one of those items that is too fussy to get more than one wear.

I think the skirt looks nicer with a tucked top. It is an interesting skirt but you can find a better one.

Almost but not quite- I have similar skirt issues so can relate. Tops don't work, what jackets to wear, tucking vs not tucking.

Your summer skirts were really good - I think a midi dress with a jacket would also be awesome?

Ok, it’s clear you all are seeing the same thing that’s bothering me — despite the potential of the style, some of the details are just off. I think that fly closure in the front is the biggest culprit. It’s going back — thank you!

I was thinking what Suz said. Everything looks a bit more avant guarde in black. The fit does look off.

Too much distraction from your super excellent figure.

Times like this make me want to take up designing and sewing clothes. I'd love to recreate this style in a more drapey, black fabric, without the front fly (a zip in the back would be much better).

Well, a little too late since you have already returned it, but I have to agree that it was best to return. The idea of the skirt was good in theory, but the fit was not the best, and you have many fabulous skirts that fit you perfectly. I hear you on designing and sewing your own clothes, sometimes I feel the same, but I have never taken the time to learn.

Oh well. I did like it I was composing my reply while the first two replies came in which were both negative. Interesting. Another skirt will be in your future

I know you've already decided, but I wanted to post anyway, because this helps me sort my own closet editing thoughts...

I liked this skirt on you, but then, you really wear clothing well. It isn't often I've seen you post a picture where the garment doesn't hang well on you - even when it isn't your style. If you don't model, maybe that's something you might consider.

Here are the reasons why I don't think this is your skirt:

1) The color seems a bit dusty and muted for you. I noticed I only liked the skirt in the photos where you're wearing it with deep + dark or rich colors: #1, #2, #6-7-8

2) I have an unimaginative eye: I see this as a summer skirt, and it's fall. I seem to recall you have a proper winter where you are, and I can't quite picture how to style it for cooler or cold temps. All I can picture is this skirt sitting unworn in your closet for the next four months, until you get it out in the spring and decide you're over it.

3) You're here, asking, which means you're not happy with it.
