K/R: Checked jacket

I'm trying to work on my "grown-up" capsule, since it seems like what I'm usually wearing is skinny jeans and an oversized sweater.
I don't need professional clothes per se, but I have the occasional meeting, and I like to have something sharp looking for travel. I don't want to look too corporate or too matronly.

Anyway, I like this Miss Wu jacket, but it's not my usual style, and since I don't buy a lot of blazers I don't totally trust my instincts. It's a crisp fabric- almost like a not-too-heavy upholstery fabric, and the pattern is a yellow-green on black, with black trim around the edges.

I haven't tried styling it different ways, but I'd probably usually wear it with black. The second picture shows it buttoned up just to show fit, but I'd probably usually wear it open. It fits really well- it's a little boxy which works for my shape.

What do you think? If I do keep it, any styling ideas?

Blazers aren't really my forte, but I'd say keep. It looks good on you and is professional without being generic or boring. I do wonder if maybe a size down might be worth a try, though? Even if it's supposed to be boxy, it looks like you could maybe go smaller.

Aubergine- this one is reasonably fitted on me when buttoned, so I'm pretty certain that the next size down would be too small. A smaller size might look good worn open, but it would look tight if I buttoned it. I've had this dilemma before. Do I commit to always wearing something unbuttoned? I think I'd rather go for the one I can wear either way.

I love the high contrast check and trim on you. I think it looks good.
My first reaction was similar to Aubergine, that it might read just a bit big, but if it fits in the shoulders and is just boxy then I can see that as working. It does not overwhelm you.

I love the print-mixing in the stock photo! Do you think you'd try it with citron and gray or black or something to mix it up, or is it only for column of black?

Either way, I don't think it's a problem to have a jacket that is fab with a few targeted outfits. I have been finding it much harder than expected to find the mythical "jacket that you toss over everything" and instead am trying to find a few jackets that look great, period, and create the few jacket looks I need..

I think this looks stunning Parsley. And it doesn't look too big to me. The shoulders look as though they fit perfectly and I think it's is just the current cut of jacket. I say keep. Very grown up

It looks a little big in the bust/arm area to me - but I know a more fluid fit is current so I'm not sure about the fit.

Two other things, I'm not a huge fan of these jackets (so take that into consideration) & it doesn't feel like "you" imo. Tell me if I'm wrong but I see & love that creative arty vibe you get from your modern classic clothing. I'm not sure if this jacket works with your style.

Unfrumped, I think it's cute in the stock photo, too, but I'm not personally a big pattern mixer. I am going to dig out my citron blouse and see how it looks with it.

Caro, I appreciate the input. That's what I'm trying to figure out. Sometimes I feel like my style is kind of schizophrenic.

I know the feeling - eclectic is hard I meant to add I've bought really classic jackets in the past & they have never been the workhorses I'd hoped. I used to think it was due to my body type but now I think it is a personality thing

Parsley!! I am hyperventilating!! I love, adore, am thrilling for you!! Damn girl you are soooooooooooooooooooo elegant in that I just tossed this on and look incredible way. Plus, PS do you look great in a turtleneck!! Wow! Wow! Wow!! Love the tipped jacket with the black. But like the best pieces, it does not detract from you. I think you look great and that's what I love most about this outfit and this jacket on you!!

I know what you mean about your style being schizo, I often feel that my style is like that. I like the blazer a lot and I think the fit is good. If it's a classic look you're after, I say keep.

This has a retro-80's vibe that I quite like. I love the way the pale green lights up your face and cuts the all-black outfit. As for styling ideas, maybe over something flowy? Like a hi-low blouse or tunic? Or keep this turtleneck on and add boot cut or wide leg trousers and a heel? Just brainstorming.

I was gonna say "This is a joke, right? You can't possibly be even considering returning this gorgeous jacket when it looks so perfectly perfect on you!!"

Definitely try it with citron. I did citron with houndstooth recently and loved it!

Oh, and try it with polka-dots, too!

You know, it's funny. I love reading the responses. You can tell as much about our style as you can tell about your own by reading what we say.

I don't think your style is schizo at all. Your style is modern classic with a shot of trendy. And I absolutely, full out ADORE it.

I gave a yay vote, no contest, but I can see 2 sides. I could see how a similar jacket on a person without some of Parsley's panache, dramatic looks and style quotient--how you've styled it and how you carry it off--to look retro in a not good way. This particular jacket has some fab and striking features that keep it current because, well, it IS current.

I don't think any of that problem is going on here, but it's interesting to me how to learn to tell the difference. Or to forge ahead if it's your style.
That is one of the more interesting things to me on the forum--how to take a given item, and find you could either wow it or drag it down by accessories or styling. Or that one person's age, type and personality could make something work and another cannot. Or that 2 jackets that seem like they are the same, but were made in different decades, are never really the same.

I've got to see what else I have that works with it- you all have given me some good ideas.
Gryffin- you are so sweet! I'm rediscovering turtlenecks, and loving them! I may turn into Diane Keaton and wear them all the time!
Claire- I will try it with flare leg trousers. I have a veritable treasure trove of Theory pants (5 or 6 pairs) that I am this close to fitting into again, and I can't wait to wear them.

Suz- thanks! Sometimes it's hard to know whether having variety makes for an incongruent style, or whether it fits into a cohesive whole.
