K/R: Chanel Style (?) Jacket ETA: Returning It.

After a week of visiting by my sister I finally have a chance to get back to the forum. And of course we went shopping while she was here....

I am not sure that this jacket is cropped enough to be a true Chanel style. I would also consider handstitching on some black ribbon around the neck and down the lapel of this jacket if you ladies advise to do so if it is a keep.Without further ado then.

(Side note: I have some handwoven silk tweed for which I will eventually sew a true Chanel jacket with the fashion fabric hand stitched to the liner etc... but this will be down the road, possible for the fall or next spring realistically based upon the time and skill needed for such a project).

Sarah A - I have a bit of a poison eye for both Chanel jackets and plaid jackets, so I feel like I can't give you an honest assessment. I would return, but because of those factors.

I love Chanel jackets in theory, but they are so hard (for me anyway) to get right! One false move and you are in dowdy-ville. This one seems to fit you really well, but lacks some of the details that would glam it up and make it look truly Chanel-esque. You could add some trim, but I'm not sure if that would help because the plaid doesn't seem quite right.

On the other hand, your sewing project jacket sounds *incredible*! Handwoven silk tweed fabric? I die! A super current Vogue pattern would be so cool for that, or maybe even a vintage one. Be sure to keep us posted on that! Please!

hmmm, not as punchy as claire said. i'm not fond of this kind of plaid so put that into context.

I'm not overly convinced by the jacket. I think it sounds like the one you want to sew yourself would be better! Have you seen the blog by Erica B showing the Chanel jacket she made?. You could have it the perfect cheeky short length and add trim. Why not give it a go sooner.

DD's posing is so CUTE - not sure I can get past that! Okay, so I think this particular jacket is a bit too long so it does start moving toward frumpdom (to me). I'd hold out until you can get to making your own.

It seems a little long on you. I would like to see it a bit more cropped for a true chanel look.

Unfortunately, I have to say to return the jacket. It's not as flattering as I think you deserve to look. It's a bit long and the proportion looks off. It overwhelms. I believe a boxy jacket shouldn't overwhelm as much as this one.

I have a sewing project waiting, too! Just think of how much time we spend shopping and returning, and then sewing won't seem so time consuming!

This jacket is close, but the sewing project sounds more unique and distinctive!

Back it goes! Thank you for your feedback! If you expert sewists have a fav pattern for this I'd love the hear the number as the sewing project will be the route here I think. Otherwise I believe I will be browsing the Vogue selection and taking some measurements off my current cropped jackets to get an idea of what various back length measurements look like on me.

Threads magazine ran a series of articles on sewing a chanel-type jacket a few years ago. If you have access to old Threads, I thought it was a really great series (my library has all the back issues).

I have a Vogue catalogue from last summer and there is a Claire Shaeffer Custom Couture Collection pattern #V8804. It has 4 small pockets but you could do all four, only two, or leave off altogether. It looks perfect.
