K/R Caslon Peplum - My first NAS foray

I finally purchased a few NAS items on the last days of the sale. The first arrivals are the Caslon Peplum shirts - navy with white stripe and burgundy with navy stripe. It said true to size so I bought Petite Small in both. I think the navy is a tad smaller, and may fit me better in the shoulders.

I think both colors would work in my wardrobe, but I'm new to the peplum style and am not sure whether it suits me. It is hard to get past the extra fabric at the hip area. Should I keep either and if so, which one? Does the size look right?

For me, it's not that there is extra fabric in the hip area. You have a very nice shape, but the proportion of top and bottom is not my favorite. It cuts high on your torso and is very elongating for your bottom half. Maybe others will see it differently. The fit through the shoulder seems good to me. You can wear button up shirts well.

Is the waist seam actually at your waist? It looks higher to me. I think a peplum would be fine on you, but maybe not this one. But you look beautiful in that burgundy color!

I feel the shirts are sitting too high up and this makes the fabric poof out over your tummy. I know from your other photos that you are slim so think the proportions here are not right. BTW have those 2 weddings in Alaska and Hawaii happened yet?

Burgundy is a great color for you! I agree that on this style the waist is too high. I've always thought a peplum was designed to accentuate the waist, which you could definitely wear.

I ordered the same shirt in burgundy and ended up returning it. I didn't like how the waist landed a couple inches above my waist, and the way it ballooned out below the waistline reminded me of a maternity top.

It's too bad, because the shirt is super cute and comfortable. Both colors look really nice on you.

I think if fits you well. The striped is my favorite but burgundy looks nice, too.
If you look at the pictures of the model, it also fits her above the waist, that seems to be intentional to me.
I think I would prefer it styled with straight or cropped pants or with a pencil skirt.
If the top goes on sale again, I will try it as well.
I hope Angie will get a chance to chime in as I would love to hear her opinion.

Joyce - I agree with what you've said, and also look forward to Angie's opinion. I do think it fits well, and is expected to fit above the natural waist. I too would be curious to see with a different shape of pant, and I thought that when I made my original comment I bet a pencil skirt would really change how the eye sees the top. Maybe a lab with different bottoms?

I agree burgundy is a good colour on you and the stripe fits well, and that the waist is supposed to be babydoll like that. I think this could be a really good *wild card* purchase for you to play around with, a good way to add interest.

I agree with Joyce. It looks good on you. I like both colors and this peplum has more drape than some that stick out more. It makes an interesting, feminine top with jeans.

I think both look good on you. Not everything has to be body skimming. I think I prefer the burgundy. I'm not sure why.

I think the fit looks good, and both blouses look nice on you. I wonder if they are your style. Are you comfortable with the feminine look of the peplum style? It's a kind of refined flounce. I'm just asking because I don't know your style, and it does seem a bit more girly than what I would presume from your hairstyle and the jeans and footwear you are showing the blouses with here (all of which are more streamlined). That is not to say you can't rock this look. Your poses, to show us the fit, are perhaps working against the
personality you would convey if we could see you in real life--photos
are hard! You mention you are not sure about the extra fabric around the hip. It looks absolutely fine to me. It is part of the peplum's feminine flare--the shape is playing up/creating curves, and that is part of its appeal. So you've hit upon the thing that you need to figure out about this style--is this aspect going to be fun for you to wear or will it make you self-conscious?
I think these tops can go with jeans like you are showing them here; I can see this style working also with a streamlined ankle pant; cropped flares (jeans or pants); cropped wide leg pants or jeans.

Okay, I just looked back and saw your post with the pretty floral dress for the wedding. You definitely wear more feminine looks with ease. I'm wondering if the waist is hitting you at a comfortable spot on these blouses. If it's high, as some responses suggest, it might be worth trying a regular rather than petite for comparison. Also, you looked so gorgeous in that dress, I wonder if these colors are a bit dark? You might enjoy the same peplum blouse more, if it were in a light-to-medium color.

I thought I would love it, based on experience with my first peplum purchase a few weeks ago which seemed similar (just posted a WIW shot from tonight https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....-me-trends ). But taking pictures and your comments have focused me on why I am not loving this, and it is:1)stiffer fabric, 2)higher round neckline (I can't the neckline to stay open because of the band collar and the crispness), and 2) where the waist hits.

Jenni NZ - my Alaska and Hawaii wedding were wonderful - YFL made sure I was so perfectly attired, I felt great.

Joyce B - it is worth a try at the sale price, nicely made, no button gap, and true to size. I will try it with a straighter bottom to see if it moves me to love.

rachylou, Joyce, JAileen, Barbara Dianne - thanks for pointing out the positives. I think the pictures are making me lean toward burgundy if I keep it. Not sure why - I thought the navy would be my favorite, but pictures really help.

Firecracker - really thoughtful helpful analysis! That dress was a stretch for me, bought it as a placeholder until I found something better, but upon styling, fell in love with it and felt so "appropriate" for my two weddings. I think I am trying to prettify my look, with baby steps. I guess I was drawn to these NAS tops because they have that feminine touch balanced with the more menswear fabrics. The waist on the dress you mentioned and the first peplum I bought is also pretty high, even on short-waisted me, but the stiffness in the Caslon tops is throwing me. And I have been lightening my my palette a bit since I bought that dress. BTW - you made me buy the Born burgundy boots - they should arrive Monday. Fingers crossed.

I echo what a lot of others said. The tops look " fine" but to me don't seem to do anything " for you" in a way that I'll bet other items or fits do, with your great features. This is ALL personal though.
I know it's called a peplum but it does skew more baby- doll. Now, I'm very long- waisted so I even have trouble with " real" peplums hitting at correct spot. But these seem boxy. I would hold out for something similar but a sleeker or more refined feminine fit.

So, I actually think the top looks right in terms of volume and all, and I like the style, but I am just not sure that it is over-all long enough. Can you try a non-petite? I find at times that a regular something fits me better than a petite. Both colors are nice. The burgundy seems especially great for you. I don't think you need to worry about extra fabric over your hips at all.

hmmmm....i'm not sure if its the tops or the bottom...something about overall proportion feels off, and i think its the slight bell bottom...can you try these again with the white jeans you wear in your other peplum post?

It's an interesting question whether the waistline is or is not too high on that top. As several people pointed out, it fits you about the way it fits the model, which is presumably what the manufacturer intended. :

So it's really just a matter of personal preference, like highwater pants (oops, did I say that?)

I agree with what others said, no problem with extra fabric in hip area. Also think regular size might work better than petite.

I have a slight preference for the burgundy.

I love that burgundy color on you. I would suggest maybe trying it with different bottoms. To me the waist looks fine. I think it is supposed to fit slightly above the natural waist, so that part is fine to my eye. Maybe try some deep cuffed slim straight jeans? I think the peplum combined with the kinda flared jeans is too much.

Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions. I will try the tops with a few other pants to see If I can feel more fab in them. This is a super-useful exercise. I may have to sit down and define my style descriptors to see if this look fits them.

I like the navy version best, although that burgundy color is lovely on you.
