K/R Cashmere Scarf and Softening/StylingCashmere? ETA Brooch pics on p2

Is this scarf too overwhelming? I really liked the "modern twinset" look of my recent emerald green merino matching sweater and scarf (#5) and when I saw this teal scarf on sale after Christmas that matches an existing cashmere sweater, I decided to give it a try.

It is longer, wider and a bit thicker than the merino - a plus in some ways as I can use it for a travel wrap for cold airplanes. But I also want to wear it in everyday life and am not sure if it is just too big for my short frame.

Also, it seems the slightest bit itchy - I think it is me with dry winter skin and a sensitive neck due some new product that doesn't agree with me. (i stopped the cream a few days ago and the scarf is much better, but still.)

K/R? Any tips on softening? And how to style it?

I like the combo!
I think the scarf will get softer after a wash. I handwash cashmere with baby shampoo and sometimes soak with hair conditioner.

I agree that washing can soften cashmere. I use Eucalan.

That’s a great color for you. I like #2 best. I don’t think it overwhelms you. I don’t know how to make it softer. If it bothers your neck maybe wait until your neck feels better?

Wow,this is so great! I also love the “modern twinset” here. Not too big. The colour is very beautiful on you. So many styling options - I particularly like 1 and 3. 2 will be great also if you ad a topper.
If you can live with the slight itchiness, I would definitely keep the scarf. It’s just perfect.

I love this color for you, but Charter Club cashmere has always made me itch, and I have never successfully softened itchy wool or cashmere, despite all the great tips other Fabbers have offered up.

I did some reading up on cashmere last year, and from what I gather, the itch factor has to do with the length of the fibers. Shorter cashmere fibers don't lie flat within the knit, but protrude, and can irritate the skin. But there was also no consensus on whether more expensive cashmere is necessarily better.

I vote return. BJ1111 is right, if it's the sweater, the itchiness will worsen with time.

What a shame if the itch factor continues, this is a very sharp look and I love the thought of a "modern" twinset! I don't have any cashmere because of the upkeep of it, but I did not know that it can be irritating. If you can't remedy that, maybe keep looking for another matching scarf. I like how generous this one is, it is more of a lush/luxe look to me. But itchy.... just, no!

I think it's stunning! Sadly, I'm no help re: the itch. I do wash my woolens, including cashmere. I use a product called Soak, in unscented. It helps reduce itch (and sweaty head smell) in our winter beanies, but I don't have any itchy scarves to report on....

Gorgeous colour on you. You could try washing in Eucalan or The Laundress Wool & Cashmere Shampoo. Sometimes hair conditioner helps too. I have the same problem with all animal fibers feeling itchy during heating season. I stick with very gentle cleansers and have upped my moisturizing game over the past couple of years, but that's a topic for another thread. One thing I've found is that if my skin is still warm and "opened up" from a shower, I absolutely can't wear merino or cashmere. I have to moisturize and then wait quite a while. Or better yet, save those sweaters for days when I've showered the night before instead of in the morning...

Thank you all for the input, suggestions and commiseration on itchy skin. Good to know it isn't just me. My internet search turned up an interesting new anti-itch idea - freezing. It is non destructive so I will try and let you know if it yields results.

Opaline, JAileen, bridgie, jessikams, torotogirl, Roberta, and all -thanks for the approval and preferred stylings - I am determined to use the forum more when I'm not sure about something because we are all overly self-critical and I trust you!

Barbara Diane, bj1111, La Belle, Bennett, - The itch factor was vastly improved over a few days of discontinuing the irritating product usage - to tolerable levels and I have not historically had a problem with Charter Club cashmere so I will follow JAileen's advice and hang on to for a few more days before I make a final decision.

Cardiff Girl - I am such a novice at scarfs and have never had a wrap (usually I cut scarves in half to streamline but that would defeat the purpose of this one plus it is a knit so can't match bound edge), so thank you for the vote of confidence! I looked through all the ways the Macy's website showed the different color ways and flung away. Now I need to figure out how to keep it in place. I hate fussy!

Irina, La P, nemosmom, SarahD8 - I have some Eucalan so will try that if the itch continues to subside. I have done the hair condition trick on some Icebreaker tops that were "the wrong sheep" (what my house calls the slightly itchy merino factor from usually reliable vendors). The after shower tip is an aha for me too.

I love this big, dramatic scarf on you, have never understood why so many short women say they can't do dramatic. As long as it's in proportion (and this is), it can look as good on a short person as it can on a tall person.

It’s a beautiful addition (great color on you) and not at all overwhelming. I like all the stylings. No help on the itching, but maybe you will adjust? I typically dislike things around my neck but if I persevere, I tend to forget about the discomfort. Of course, this doesn’t apply if the item causes a rash!

Wow - what a stunning colour on you , Karen. But the colours are totally different in your hotel hallway photo, making it look emerald green. I love the scarf and don't think it's too big for you at all, but the itchiness would be a deal-breaker for me.
