K/R Boden Autumn Trench - YouLookFab Forum

Sporadic posting as the summer nears its end and school is scheduled to start again next week.
In my search for a trench coat (#1 on my fall list) I ordered the Boden Autumn Trench in my normal Boden size 12R.
Pros:
So well made it's gorgeously finished (see rugby stripe lining, buttons are fab etc..
the caramel color is delicious (and I think works for me as it blends with my hair)
Good weight (not too thin, lined for structure) and length
Cons:
Belt is too short to tie and the first hole sort of strangles me (I've put on a few lbs, but this is with light clothing underneath) Customer service is researching if I got the belt of a smaller size by chance.
Is it too tight? Make me look too busty? Is it because the belt is under my bustline? Why is it so much cuter on the model? (although I prefer the color IRL) I would never wear it all buttoned up, but would like to wear closed and belted if weather requires it.
Should I return and keep looking?
Should I try next size up?
I am too emotionally in love with this to be objective. YLF don't sugar coat it please.

One quick observation, it looks to me like the model does not have the coat actually buttoned, just pulled across and belted. Have you tried a single breasted trench? I find them infinitely more flattering on me.

Wow, that colour is sensational on you, Jeanne. This coat is worth fighting for, in my opinion.

So...I like it on you when you leave it as a V. It does make you look a bit busty when done up all the way.

I would ensure that the belt is the right size for the coat, and I might try another size of coat to ensure the fit is overall right. And then I would play around with it a bit more in the styling -- just to see how it feels in both sizes. The shoulder looks okay but maybe borderline snug in this size, so you might be golden (so to speak) in the size up.

BTW, THANK YOU for your advice re tracking my DHL order. I followed the Nordstrom link and found that the order was still with DHL and had never been returned to Nordies. Their customer service dept. was, of course, sensational about it and they simply gave me the credit.

The colour is gorgeous on you. The belt looks really small on the model too though. I would explore a size up just to see how much of a difference it makes.

The belt gives me pause as do the buttons, which feel very close-set. I think the model is wearing it open, which makes the buttons look more balanced.

Can we see it styled a few different ways and a pic of you wearing it open?

Color is killer on you. Whatever the outcome of the coat, you need this color in your life if you don't already have it. Remember that you're in love with a color, not necessarily the coat.

From the back, the shoulders look like a great fit. Makes me think a size up would be too much, but it doesn't hurt to try since sizing can be so irregular.

From the front, the coat isn't so flattering belted. Not awful, not great. Have you tried it unbelted? Plenty of trenches aren't belted. Don't know if the straighter line would be more skimming and flattering.

Re the belt size, try a long scarf, another belt, piece of rope, something--just to see if loosely belting this coat to a more comfortable level changes the way it looks to you.

I agree that single breasted styles might be easier for you but I don't blame you for trying to make this work if you can. The color is so pretty and makes you happy!

Stunning WOW colour. Great length and fit. The belt would not be a deal breaker for me, but it could be for you. (All my trench coats require a proper belt fastening and are not ties, actually). The double breasted button positioning is close together - which is slimming to my eye.

How does the trench hang open? That's key too.

Caramel and you were made for each other! And it's so refreshing to see a rugby striped lining instead of the ubiquitous plaid. It is a lovely trench.

I'm itching to say buy it, but I can also see why you are hesitating. It's definitely worth trying a larger size, as Suz suggested, but I'm not sure if that will change how some of us just look in double-breasted trenches. Personally, I think if you feel great when you put this coat on, then to &$#* with whether or not you look like the model in the picture. You have a bust, the model doesn't--viva la difference!

Ooooh, I LOVE the color. I can't tell if the front is pulling in the bust, but I think it is really flattering otherwise. Maybe compare the size up? It is such a unique color; I don't find the belt to be a deal breaker personally. I wonder if there is some way it could be lengthened if that really is what would stop you.

Would you say the color in your pics is the true color? It is SO different from the promo pics!

The belt is too tight. You can always try to size up or use with a different belt

Just lurking here now from my office, but did you ask why looks cuter on the model?
I am always mad when see these little posing/styling tricks which not always stand up for the real life, so I had to chime in to reveal the (sad?:-))truth.

So, disregarding the size 0, 6"tall, AA busted teenager model:-), and disregaring that she is using the belt from the biggest size available, say, like from a size 20:-)):
-the trench actually IS NOT even BUTTONED UP on her!

You can see the very thin overlap on the low hem, which is so minor like front sides are only a bit folded over on the bust to look like it is buttoned (but it's surely not). The left side column of buttons is actually outside the hem of the overlap...can you see?

BTW I like the fit and colour, hope you can get a longer belt, and enjoy your fab new trench:-)

Adore that color on you Jeanne and I think the trench looks fab. The belt needs to be changed though - I'm thinking the wrong belt got paired with that trench.

Love this color on you! Perhaps your cobbler can duplicate the buckle holes and add on more holes to make the belt longer, the tail looks like it has some space still. Love the mixed media belts Rute posted too! I think the coat fit is otherwise very good through the shoulder.

It looks good to me except for the belt. I think the bust issue is due to the belt being too tight. Can you try it with a random belt from another jacket just to see how it looks?
