K/R Blue top and green dress

Hi everyone. I bought a couple things online and I need a bit of advice. The first 2 pics are of the blue Zara Basic top. I can't button it around my waist (but that's a goal of mine), and even if I could, I don't trust the buttons to stay closed.

The 3rd and 4th pics are of an Ann Taylor Loft dress. I have it styled with my blue denim cropped jacket. What else do you think would look good with it?

I'm for the less than clear pics. I'd love to hear any and all comments and concerns. Thanks!

I vote nay on the top if you can't close it ... that would seem to be a minimum requirement for a top :p Is it also a bit tight on your arms?

I think the dress looks better with the denim jacket because it gives it some tailoring and structure, but I feel we lose your waist definition in #3

I guess it's more important to know why you are adding these items to your wardrobe so I can assess the context of the situation. For everyday, the blue top feels a bit blah if you can't close it, unless it will just serve as a light weight covering. I like to have multiuse clothing that I can style in different ways which is why it concerns me about the shirt.

The dress while it is lovely, I feel that it doesn't exactly suit you. The neckline feels odd and you have a lovely shape which doesn't stand up well in these photos. Like lyn, I feel the jacket gives the whole thing structure but then adding it diminishes your shape.

I like the idea of the blouse, but much prefer to see a proper jacket or cardigan as a topper so I would vote return on that one if it can't be worn buttoned up. The dress is a pretty summery piece, do you have hot weather where you live? It looks comfy and breezy for a hot day!

I agree with the others. Buy the top for the body you have - a button up should button up. The dress looks cute for hot weather. You could also try swapping out the belt. Maybe a red or yellow skinny belt would work?

I Eco the others. Vote return the shirt. Shop for the body you have today. If you can't button it, it should go back. There will be plenty of other buttons ups.

I like the dress best in #3 without the denim. I also like Sarah's idea of a colorful belt to bring attention to your lovely waist.

I agree with the others about the shirt. Unless you really need the dress now, I think you can do better. It doesn't do your great figure justice. The top part seems too big. I want to pull it up an inch so that it doesn't droop, but it may just be the photo.

Sorry to be a dittohead. It's great that you are trying things out. I would pass on this dress. It doesn't do you justice and requires work to make it work. Having been on a marathon of dress shopping, I know many misses are out there for every win, but keep looking for something with more structure that fits your shape. Then it will earn it's keep and not require a lot of workarounds.

Will you feel exposed without a topper on the dress? Needing a topper on a summer dress is not so great. I would return the blouse, and look into a cardigan or light blazer for the same purpose.

The top is going back. I think I fell in love the ribbon detail on the button part.

I have a really hard time with dresses. My bust is almost a full size smaller than my hips, so if it fits one part, it probably won't fit the other. And my lack of waist means that most things bag at the chest and are tight at the waist. Ugg.

I like the dress! If you live in a hot climate, it looks perfect for hot days. Pair with strappy sandals and switch out belts. A straw handbag would be cute. I don't see the fit issues on the top, but perhaps I'm missing something.

Thanks for reminding me Isis. I forgot to mention that I do live in a hot climate (the deep south in the US).

Sorry about my little rant above. Dress shopping can just be a bit stressful. I think I have a thin brown and a thin black belt. I think I'll try those with the dress and see how they look. How should I go about creating a waist when I naturally don't have one?
