K/R: black skinnies and fluid tops

Hey, when I come back to YLF, I really come back to YLF!

I have noticed over the last year that one of my favorite silhouettes is long over lean - a tunic or long shirt over skinny bottoms. Now that I work at home I have more occasion to play with this look, since it wasn't really an office option for me.

I went to the Rack today and found two pairs of black skinnies - both Joes Jeans. The ones in the first pic are coated, 28 waist. The second are a thick cotton material, not ponte but not really denim either, with a stripe of coated denim down the sides. They are both really comfortable - the 27s are a little more snug but not in a bad way. I think I like the coated jeans a little better, but I'm afraid they'll stretch too much and slide down.

I also got this top in red and black to replace something similar I had from Old Navy and wore to death. Not sure if it's too long and loose to wear this way, though, it can be half tucked like I've done here, but I like to wear these tunic style, too.

Which pair of pants should I keep, and should I keep the tops or keep looking?

I love the red top! It's a great color on you. My go-to work-at-home silhouette too, though, so I'm biased. I also like the Joe's, especially if they have a cool coated stripe! (May need to get to the Rack soon to see those in person!) I live in my comfy/cotton/ponte styles at home or for traveling...looks more dressy but feels like lounge/gear...best of both worlds! I haven't tried any coated denim yet, but I know that I love my white and regular Joe's because they never stretch much and never bag out.

Thanks! To be clear, it's hard to tell in the photos, but the first photo is the completely coated Joe's and the second two photos are the second pair, also Joe's, but with just the coated stripe. They don't really look that different, do they...

I have the same issue with my camera/mirror/lighting. Sigh. But in that case, they sound quite different, and if your needs are casual, you may just need both?!

Also, whoops - just added a pic of the shirt worn loose and untucked. Wow, it really is long. I think it's too long, no? I tried a belt, but not sure that works either.

Tricia, so nice to see you again! First, I love this color red on you. It's beautiful with your coloring and looks nice all three ways you have styled it. I love a long and lean look, too. I can't really get a good handle on the fit of the jeans from the photos. Both look good to me, and I especially like the ones in the first photo.Which pair are you leaning towards?

The first photo is the coated ones. I do kind of like them better, I'm just worried they will bag out more. The other ones are a waist size down (although cut differently, I think) and I know you're supposed to buy jeans that feel a little snug...although with skinnies, maybe sizing up a bit is a good thing.

It's really hard to see the difference in these pictures but I love how you look in #1 - perhaps the jeans fit is a factor.

Thanks! I think I'm going to keep the first pair and return the second.

Angie or anyone, what about the tops? Keep or look for something a little shorter so I can wear it like a tunic without it overwhelming me? Also, if a shirt like this were worn loose, can a jacket of any kind be worn over it?
