K/R #1 Thrifted Tipped Leather Jacket

So I went to my favorite thrift store today for their 50% off sale. I didn't get there until after lunch, so I had little hope in finding anything. I saw a gal try this jacket on but then she decided to pass since it was too "80's" for her. She was well endowed and so I almost didn't try it on because I thought there was no way it would fit me, but at the last minute I did and was SHOCKED to find that the fit was great! (I don't think she tried to close the jacket.) Last pic to the right is sleeved scrunched and hair forward.
Details:
Yvonne Marie brand
black with cream tipping
100% Lamb leather with polyester lining
eye and hook closures all the way to the top
Paid $17.50 before tax

Questions:
Yay or Nay?
Is it too 80's?
Sleeve length fine?
What's the average price for dry cleaning a real leather jacket?

You did not thrift this!!! I love it and it looks a great fit.

You could wear this with jeans, black skinny pants, over a shift dress (knee length).
I think you could create a real retro look, or modern it up with the jacket creating a bit of an edge.

Fit is great, sleeve length maybe a bit short, but I doubt anyone would notice. If you're worried about it, scrunch sleeves or see how they look rolled up.

I recently got my husband's big, heavy, 1970's, fleece (fake sheep??) lined leather coat cleaned. It cost $50. If the jacket smells fine and looks fine, I wouldn't bother. You might try just hanging it up inside-out (indoors, to prevent fading) and giving it some fresh-air time if it smells musty. If it's lined, you could even spray the armpits with some of that anti-bacterial fabric spray if it really bothers you, but personally I hate the smell of that stuff.

I really, really like this jacket AJ. The black with the white detailing is so fun! The only small thing is the sleeve length looks just a teeny-tiny bit short, but as shoppingisfun mentioned, you are the queen of adapting looks to make things work. I'd love to see this feature in one of your WiW outfits!

Yay! That's a fantastic jacket. I don't think it's too 80's because the colours are so subdued. I'd pair it with a "column of colour" outfit; black popped into my mind first, but I think any colour would work!

That looks fantastic. I think it looks more modern classic than dated, in part because of the Chanel-esque tipping and in part because of the shoulder/front yoke seams being quite sleek rather than built-up in what I think of as the more exaggerated 80s style plus the straight hemline where the 80s look was more gathered in with tabs or blousy.

Sleeves do seem just a tad short, but they look very nice when scrunched I think. What about wearing it over a softly draped or flowy dress or tunic? In a very of-the-minute colour like orange or cobalt perhaps? Or red! It would also be a lovely counterpoint to a long evening gown I think, perhaps something with romantic or vintage connotations --- lace, corset-style boning, beadwork.

Or instead of the blazer with one of the current midi skirts, if you like that look? Something in a black and white floral would make quite an impact with that, I think...

If with pants, maybe again, *make* sure any 80s associations are dispelled by a more fashion-forward silhouette like the soft slouchy draped styles (as opposed to the 80s' box-pleats and tapered peg legs)?

And of course, as Jyoti says, I can totally see you turning this into the crowning piece of a denim column for casual wear!

Actually, we wore the same kind of banded style in the 60's as well. I think it's a classic. What makes it interesting, though, is the contrast of the toughness of leather with the ladylikeness of the tipping/banding. It's like a whole play on control and direction.

The fit is perfect, I like the sleeves scrunched and I would try it with a shorter shirt. Great find!

*gasp* I love it! Very Chanel-esque vibe, IMHO.

I have bought a few second hand jackets that smelled of cigarette smoke, and I generally just hang them outside in the sunshine for a few hours, and then leave them out somewhere in the house where the air can get to them. Unless it's truly dirty I wouldn't really bother with cleaning it. Sunlight and air are pretty good deodorizers and disinfectants, especially if you turn it inside out.

It looks like it was cut for you, and for the price... I would definitively keep.
Another reason: colour blocking will be big this year, and this jacket yields many possibilities in that area.

I have never cleaned any leather garment, whether bought new or thrifted. It is extremely expensive and can wear out the leather finish, especially around the seams. I wouldn't buy a secondhand leather garment that is very dirty, stained, or has strong smells. But your jacket looks great!

If there are any odors or you just want to freshen up the jacket, turn it inside out and spray it with water scented with some nice-smelling essential oils (what I use) or Febreeze, then hang it outside on a sunny day. Good as new in just a few hours . . .

It is a very lovely and distinctive jacket. So chic in a Chaneleque way as others have pointed out! I think it could be styled lots of ways. The first thought that came to my mind is classic straight trousers or pencil skirt but this will go with jeans and just about everything! Just depends on the vibe you want to give off that day. I love the sleeves scrunched. Way to go!!

I'm in LOVE! KEEP! Style as others' have suggested in a very modern way. I feel like you have more options with items like this because of your long, loose curls. If I were to put this on with my bob, I would already have both feet back in th 1980's. I thnk it found its perfect home with you! And if you think the sleeves are a bit short, just call them bracelet length! Skip the cleaning. My son just called about getting his letter jacket cleaned and they quoted him $50. Maybe you can try Dryel, that "home drycleaning" kit? I can't wait to see you style this in your inimitable way, AJ! You rock!

I have had good luck turning leather inside out and putting it in the drier on high with a Method lavendar drier sheet for 30 minutes. Kills everything, including most smells.

This might be the best thrifted jacket EVER! It looks great on you AJ and I can see it with so many things in your wardrobe - with skirts, over a dress, with skinnies, etc. I love it with the sleeves scrunched and I don't think it looks 80's at all.

I've dry cleaned my leather jackets and it cost anywhere from $40 - $50 but it doesn't have to be done all that often so it's worth it.

I know I'm chiming in late, but I hope you decide to keep it...it's a super Chanel look in a totally unexpected fabric. How does it look unbuttoned (it looks a bit tight from the rear view)?
