K/R - Vintage floral dress

I bought this dress from my vintage consignment lady about two weeks ago. I haven't taken the tags off yet, simply because it's still not summery enough to wear the dress! But I thought I'd take advantage of that and post a keep/return on the dress. My radar has been a little off lately so thought I'd better check with y'all!

Thanks Jem - I do worry sometimes with vintage that it can be the "bad" vintage and not the "good" vintage, you know what I mean?

I know what you mean, but this one doesn't even look vintage, at least from the pictures. It looks like it could be current to me. I think it's super pretty!

I think it looks very nice. Do you feel confident and like the way you feel in it? If you don't or are unsure, you may want to consider returning it.

I like the pattern and colors. I am not sure about the giant bow.

The bow is "built in"? Would you wear alone or with a jacket? I just fear the bow might get in the way of layering. Otherwise I like it on you. Would be perfect for a special occasion like a wedding or shower.

I love the silhouette, the pattern and the colours on you, Shannon. Like Anna, I'm not entirely sure about the black bow, can it be removed?

Also: you must have some pretty awesome consignment stores in your neighbourhood, you always find the most fantastic clothes and accessories!

I think the bow is cheeky. But it could be a bit much if you want to wear a sweater or jacket over it. Could you wrap around and tie in back if you need to?

Love the dress, but I don't love the bow. It seems like an afterthought (why is it there? why is there no sash attached to it?), and is very big. I do have a bit of a poisoned eye for center front detailing on things though (which is why I almost always tie my bow sashes off center) so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Hmm, I wonder, is it long enough to tie behind you like a sash rather than in front?

Love the dress, not thrilled about the bow. If you feel that you would like to remove the bow, it's a fairly simple operation: open the side seams, using a seamripper...take out the bow, stitch up the sideseams and you're done. However, if you like the bow I still think the dress is lovely and could be a workhorse in your summer wardrobe for things like weddings, church, and other social occasions.

I love the dress WITH the bow. And it looks modern to me. As long as your shrug/denim jacket is worn open, I see no problem at all. Wow, I can't believe how perfect the colors and print are next to your skin/coloring! Really. Unless it was too expensive to make the CPW work out, I vote KEEP!!! Have you tried it with your fish-bows? I know you said you might reserve those for pants, but I can't help thinking how they would add that undeniably current element to this dress.

I vote keep. The bow just means, you don't need too many other embellishments or accessories.

I'm kinda laughing at the "bow" comments...the bow is removable but actually helps to cinch in the waist of the dress a bit. BUT....are you ready for this?....it is long enough for me to tie behind my back, which I tried at the consignment store, so can wear my denim jacket on top to dress it down without the bow being in the way or showing at all. I always want to be able to wear an item in more than one way. I detest sashes/bows in the back of clothes so will not wear it tied in the back unless a jacket or cardi is on top.

I like it without the bow personally, just because it's so darn dark. I would probably like it better tied in the back though. I think the dress looks lovely on its own, and if you can have it shaped so it's like this sans belt, even better

Hate bows in the back - they remind me of little girls' party dresses. It would either have to stay in the front, be tied in the back but only with a jacket or cardigan over it, or remove it altogether.

The dress was $24.99, which would be refunded. Maybe I should return it? Why am I feeling so unsure of myself these days?

UPDATE: Hubby hadn't seen this dress yet so I put it on for him a few minutes ago. Now y'all know he's pretty complimentary and doesn't say mean spirited things at all...however, he took one look at this dress and said "uuhhhhh......no". That was it. Message received - although I dress for myself, he obviously has had a visceral reaction to this dress and therefore I would never be comfortable wearing it around him. So back it goes. No worries - I don't think I was totally in love with it anyway.

I love the dress on you. Did he tell you why he does not like it? My hubby is pretty conservative so sometimes it takes him some time to adjust when I try something new. When I get a negative comment from him for something I like I ask why. If he can articulate it and I think he is right I return. If he cannot articulate it usually it is just the adjustment thing...
In any case listen to your gut feeling on this one

Sveta - when I asked him why he hated it so, he said he's sure his mother had this dress....not a dress like it, THIS EXACT DRESS! and no one wants to have the same dress as their mother-in-law (lol)!

Wow. I am sad to hear that hubs vetoed it, because I LOVED it, bow and all. I agree with others that these colours are just brilliant on you - stunning - I could see from the thumbnails!! And imagining them in summer...it was lovely.

i think it looks stupendous on you. But alas....
