K/R - Schöffel rain jacket in black

I ordered the black Schöffel Gore-Tex jacket I tried in the store in navy (see here). I think the fit is quite good overall, just the sleeves are a tad too long. The black isn't the most flattering on me though and it's 170€.

Rolled the cuff once.

With the hood up, sleeves closed and the hem tightened.

What do you think? The package came when my Mum was here and she liked it. I'm still not sure. I think it wouldn't hesitate if the sleeves would fit! But honestly I can stop looking for something with shorter sleeves because petite sizing in gear just isn't available. They offer alterations if you buy it in a store (and not online like I did), but I'm sure that would be a big additional expense.

I don't know, Astrid. It doesn't wow me, but you do need something. It seems you have to settle for too-long sleeves no matter what you pick. Which jacket in your price range have you liked best?

Hmm. I went back and looked at your original thread, and this jacket seems to suit you well -- good fit, and as flattering as these kind of garments can be (I would never even bother to post my gear for feedback here because I'm soooo utilitarian about it!). I have to admit though that I think I prefer navy on you to the black. Just a bit softer with your coloring, yet still neutral and versatile.

Do I understand correctly that your reason for trying the black is a price difference? If this is something you will wear for years to come (and my experience with gear jackets is that you can indeed wear them for decades!), I would think about how that CPW will diminish in the long run and get the color you feel best in.

As for sleeve length, I always welcome a little extra on jackets! All the better for keeping warm. Better long than short, IMO.

Thanks Alasse! So far? Honestly, it's difficult to say. There hasn't been one that really felt like it was perfect for 'me'. But maybe that's asking a bit much of gear. I could always go for the JW jacket instead, that one has also too long sleeves, but it's only 120€ and navy instead of black. I'm not enthusiastic about either one, but they were the best fit by far looking at everything else I tried on.

Thanks Janet! I'm posting it because I will be wearing this jacket more or less for the whole holiday. I don't plan to bring another jacket, probably just a fleece one for layering purposes. And yes, it's the price difference why I ordered the black. I do think the navy might be nicer looking, but I don't want to pay 250€ for it. If you all think I shouldn't go with black I would probably order the navy JW instead.

I really like this one! A lot. I prefer my sleeves longer in gear and/or rain jackets to keep my hands dry/warm. I vote stop looking. You found it!

Thanks Carter! I know the sleevelength is more practical when it's longer, but when they're not tightened they feel very long too me, especially because the sleeves are fairly roomy. But I guess I just have to get used to it. All my jackets had too long sleeves in the past, before I discovered YLF and alterations. Maybe that's why it bothers me so much, it seems to be like a step back. Although maybe I should stop thinking about gear that way.

If you are going to have your arms out or up when walking, you will want the longer sleeves. If they are shorter, the rain is going to drip in. I think they look fine cinched with the velcro.

I agree with Janet and Ceit in that the bit of extra length in the sleeves can come in handy. I'm not sure that would be a deal breaker for me.

Black is so hard to tell in photographs but to my eye, the fit looks good and my, you look so cute with the hood up (I hope it's ok to say that...).

Is it comfortable? Is it what you are looking for in terms of function?

Thanks Shannon! Cute - if you say so... Yes, the fit is good. It's long enough to cover my bum and there's enough room in the hips. And layering isn't a problem either. It is comfortable and I do think this should keep me dry (that's my main concern, really). Hopefully the weather will be good, but I want to be sure to be equipped for three weeks of rain if need be.

I like this one best too. Leave the sleeves. They look fine shortened with the velcro.

I find 170€ pricey... because I like to my replace my jackets a lot. There's always some reason why I want a different one.

I have a question: Do you normally wear your rain coats at this length? I go for longer ones because of dripping and drafts.

Thanks Rachylou! I definitely wouldn't want to replace this one fast. This should be my rain jacket for the next few years. That said, this wouldn't be an everyday jacket for me. I'd wear it for travel or for going for a walk in bad weather at home, outdoor concerts, that kind of thing. But I definitely prefer an umbrella otherwise. I didn't have a rain coat or jacket for the last four years I think (besides insulated waterproof winter jackets). As for the length, longer might be nice - but ones that were longer than this were few and far between. Most of the gear jackets were considerably shorter and didn't cover my bum at all.

I never got to post on the other thread, because I was trying to make up my mind. But my impression was that it was a tiring search.

I hear you about feeling like it's a step back to wear too long sleeves, but these long sleeves serve the purpose. I also believe in PPP and I'd normally vote to keep searching. However, I guess if you're pressed for time then given the positive reviews I'd say keep this one for the length of the returns window, but keep looking, something may come up and you won't be under such pressure.

Another aspect when comparing this jacket and JW one is the cost. If you're budget aware and you're settling for non-PPP item anyway, is this jacket that much better than JW to justify the price difference.

Yes, it really is tiring. And I've run out of options where to look. Of course there's always more online, but I've found that it's not really easy to tell anything from descriptions so trying jackets in the store is really the better way to go. I still have some time to look, but I'm going to be busy at the end of the semester and I would like to have it sorted beforehand or I might end up in panic a week before the trip because I have no jacket. I only have the usual 14 days return window and I got the package last Friday, so there isn't that much time to look in between. I guess I could order the JW one now for a direct comparison. I hear you on price and PPP - I guess I feel like I get the better deal with this one quality wise, but I'm not sure that's true. Maybe it's just my prejudice after seeing so much JW in the urban jungle. The features of the jackets are fairly similar.

I just placed an order for the JW jacket. I had a look and they had only three left in navy in my size and it was still marked down, so I jumped. I still have enough time to compare the two when it gets here. And then I can show you some better pics of that one. I also added, more or less on the fly, a pair of the Josef Seibel Caspian sneakers Angie recommended yet again. The silver metallic was on sale so the shoes and the JW jacket would be more or less the same amount as this jacket. If the sneakers are as comfortable as everyone says the decision might have been made.

This one seems pretty flattering, really--it's a very nice fit, and a good length; some jackets are so short I don't think they provide much rain coverage--yes, you could have made use of something not-black with your lovely hair coloring, but you CAN wear black for sure and it will always go with everything. Pick a couple of your favorite-color scarves for some change-up.

Hmm, I actually like the jacket, probably because it looks so functional and well-made. To me a rain jacket has to, first and foremost, protect me from the rain. Only then do I get fussed about things like color. And I agree that longer is better when it comes to sleeves, especially if you can use velcro to snug the wrist. Covering my entire bum is also vital--having a wet seat is not not fun.

But I suspect you'll be able to make a better decision after you see both together.

Thanks Unfrumped! I'd definitely take one or two nice scarfes to soften that black near the face. I like to wear scarves in any case, especially when it's a bit chilly or rainy.

Thanks Gaylene! You're right of course, function comes first in this case. That's why I only looked at gear and not fashion brands for a rain jacket. I agree that it's important that you're bum is covered, or you can never sit down. I think it's strange that most people don't seem to want that, looking at all the other gear jackets out there. I'm looking forward to doing the direct comparison.
