K/R - patterned high waisted midi skirt

So I bought this skirt today because I just fell in love with the pattern and colors when I saw it online a few days ago. It's a midi a-line skirt made from a thick cotton fabric. The fit and length is perfect, but it is VERY high waisted on me. I don't like the way it looks with the top tucked into the skirt because it is so high waisted, I think I'd need to buy some cropped tops to go with it. I know that we shouldn't buy skirts when we have no tops to go with them, but I'm generally lacking tops at the moment, so I think this would be alright. This would definitely be a summer skirt only, because I don't think this unlined cotton agrees with tights.

What do you think? Keep or return? And what tops would you wear with it? I folded the blue sweater up in the last picture, is this length better? And can you see this fitting into my style aspirations?

I like it and I think it would work well with the right top! That said, I have a high waist skirt that I have been unable to find the perfect top for, so I would advise you to find atleast one top that works before making the final decision.

I love this skirt for you Astrid - beautiful colours and fits you perfectly. I have one higher waist fuller skirt and find I can only wear tops tucked into it - untucked looks too bulky. But that's just me.

Astrid that is a beautiful skirt! It reminds me of Angie's. I see your issue with it, if you want to tuck in a black top, maybe get a black obi belt to kind of fake a regular waist on the skirt? A short clingy knit top untucked might work too. Your sweater in 4 obscures the pretty part of the skirt to me, but 5 looks better IMO. I'm struggling with some of these waist-band issues with my skirts, too! I'll be watching the advice you get!

Thanks Kirti! That's a good idea, I have four weeks to return it I think. Although I think I could also buy some woven tops and simply shorten them myself.

Thanks Shannon! This skirt is very fitted in the upper part, so I think a looser top would be alright. I like tucking generally, but I think when I tuck here the proportions are wrong.

Thanks Claire! I don't want to necessarily tuck this top into it, I just wore it when I took the pics. But a belt to elongate the top half is a good idea. I love the idea of a short knit top! I'm just not sure if I'll find soemthing that's short enough. I agree, I like it in #5 better too.

Love the print for you but I'm a bit wary of you being able to find an appropriate top for it.

LOVE! You were made for this type of skirt, and that print is TDF. I really like it all the ways you've shown it: tucked, longer top, slightly shorter top. I think it looks fab.

Beautiful skirt! I have some higher waisted skirts and I like wearing them with a tucked tee or cami and a cropped cardigan, jacket, or shrug.

Another option would be a longer top with a belt over it, right at about the waist of the skirt, then a cropped cardi or jacket with that.

Oooh, it's pretty! Reminds me of stained glass. I like high waisted skirts like this but I find that I almost always have to tuck with them; since I am very short waisted, all my tops are too long for high waist skirts. Sometimes a tucked fitted top + longer blazer or cardi works too.

Another option would be to buy a size bigger and see if the waist sits lower. This might just have the undesirable effect of making the skirt do that annoying rotating thing though.

Thanks Abie! I have a fairly short blue cardigan that would look great with it, I think. I'm not sure if I like the idea of a longer top over it, but I'd have to try it I guess.

Thanks Diana! Yes, I'm shortwaisted too. I think all my current tops are too long for it, but I don't own a cropped top at all. I didn't have anything to wear them with before. I'm going to try the tucked top and longer cardi too. Unfortunately they didn't have the bigger size anymore, I aked because I wanted to try it. I could order it online, but that would be complicated.

Oh, just had another idea. Do you have a fitted waistcoat? I think that would work with even a looser top since the waistcoat would create waist definition.

That's a good idea! Although mine's not very summery since it's black.

ETA I've tried on a denim wiastcoat that fit perfectly last week, but I didn't buy it. I could have a look if they still have it and try it with the skirt.

Personally, I like it with a top tucked in, and I think Claire had a good idea of wearing a wide belt to visually lower the waist a little.

A denim jacket or cropped cardigan would look great, too.

Keep it, please. And DO try it tucked. I think you are just unused to the proportion - it is not a BAD proportion. It actually lengthens the leg line. Agree with Angie re the jacket.

I love this skirt for you Astrid! You really have a fabulous eye for prints (which shows in your amazing scarf collection). I think you can pull any color from the skirt to pair, plus white/ivory on top with light shoes, and of course a denim shirt/jacket!

Astrid, it is beautiful! Would yo consider tucking a top and then adding a slim belt that sits in the middle of the full waistband?

I love the skirt! I think you need a sleeved shirt to balance the fullness. Wear this skirt with a sleeved (short sleeves are fine) buttondown tucked into the skirt.

Thanks Angie! Of course, how could I forget about a denim jacket? I think a denim jacket would be perfect with it, although I also have to figure out how to wear it when it's too hot for a jacket.

Keep! It looks beautiful on you and I actually don't think it's too high waisted. A denim, tailored jacket or a belt would make a nice waist definition. And for the colors - I think it could be used both summer and winter (with dark hose or tights and dark ancle boots)

Such a pretty skirt! The print is gorgeous. I think it would work really well for autumn too, you'd just need to wear a (half-)slip under it to keep it from clinging to tights.
