K/R - a trio of tops

I got all three of these at Ann Taylor. My goal was to find some pretty tops I could wear underneath jackets. One works out fine for that purpose (the green one); the other two don't. However, I can envision wearing them on their own as it warms up around here.

1. I'd love to hear your thoughts on these.

Black top - The horizontal crease could be ironed out. It's not a sign that the top is too tight there. It doesn't work with either of these jackets, does it???

2. Also, I'd love to know if you have suggestions for tops to wear under the two jackets shown in pictures...5, 6 and 7

Amy, I LOVE 2/3. I wonder if the black top is pulling across the bust a bit or if that's just a crease. I think 1 would be nice for layering - have you tried that?

Thanks Sarah. I have tried number 1 with a jacket, but the cowl is a little bit...poofy and low, so it competes with my jacket collars.

The horizontal line on the black top is just from being folded for so long. I don't think it's pulling, but will double check.

Love #2 on you especially the color. I find a mock turtleneck or simple scoop neck t-shirt works with the type of jackets you have posted. Have you tried something that simple?

Amy, I love the colour and shape of #1 on you! Why doesn't it work with any of your jackets? Even if it doesn't, I like it as a stand alone if it works well with your bottoms.

#2/3 is FAB. Looks terrific.

The black one seems nice, too.

The jackets may seem tough to style because, relatively speaking, they have ALGO. But once you find the right partners for them, no problem. I think with the one in #5 I might be tempted to go really simply, with a simple scoop neck (not a low scoop) top either in the colour of the bottom you're wearing or a tonal variation (for a sort of column of colour) or maybe one of the jacket colours. It's just a question of finding a simple neckline that won't compete. Some people look good in a collared shirt or a bow blouse with a jacket like this, but you'll have to try it on to see if it works for you.

For the other jacket, I'll bet Natalie has some great ideas (and images). She loves hers and wears it often. I think she sometimes wears it with soft blouses. Being a bore, again, I'd probably wear it with something very simple underneath. Just something that filled the neckline in, especially if you didn't intend to take it off.

I'm going to be Angie's stand-in and tell you that you shouldn't fill your closet with these "bare" tops that need to be worn on their own. If you need warm weather tops, then these are beautiful. But if you're covered there and not willing to part with something to make room for these then I say return.

As for the jackets, what about this top with #5 to echo the cream trim (or something like it):

I bought it and recently wore it under a lace tee. It is sheer, so a cream cami would be needed if it were under the jacket. It was on sale in the store downtown, but limited sizes. And extra discount brought the price to $30. Even if you can't get this one, I think a soft cream button down blouse would be great with this jacket.

#6 I envision a simple colored knit. Angie had me buy this one because the colors were right and because the sleeve is a little longer. This in orange would be nice on you. I think with this jacket you need to open up the neck a bit and add some color. I don't think this jacket is as flattering on you because it is so boxy.

#7 is sort of already like a blouse, so just a simple black cami would do, wouldn't it? This jacket is really killer on you!

Suz, that's great advice. Perhaps I'm overthinking it and should just do something simple.

Jenava, you are wise. The thing is, I do a good job of buying for my dominant season, but I don't have anything for warmer weather (really...no shorts, no lightweight tops...), so this trio should be nice. Thank you for your suggestions about tops to wear with the jackets. That's very helpful. Keep it simple is my new plan!

#2 is my hands down fave! Great color and looks great beneath the jacket. I'd look for more tops like that if you are planning on layering!

Amy, sometimes I use the trick for the chanel-like jacket like yours if there is a competing neckline: I fasten the top button but leave the rest open.
What a pretty jacket in the last picture. I would do a top with a higher round neckline here. t-neck should work well too.

Would top #1 work under a vneck cardi perhaps with a belt on sweater or top? I'm not sure you can wear sweaters to work though?
Love top #2 - the color is just fantastic on you.
Top #3 is going to compete with almost anything that goes on top of it with all that detail near the shoulders.

Simple shell/basic cut (but you could do those in patterns) to go under the jackets would be nice so the focus is on the shape of the jackets.

I love your new tops, especially, #1 and #4 --- great colours and fit, great detailing. I'm smiling a little ruefully as I have the opposite problem -- of not enough tops that I can wear on their own in summer in a slightly less casual situation. So I'm rather envious.

BUT, to your problem, I actually would venture to say I quite like the look you have in #6. However, Suz is certainly right that the easiest way to go with all three jackets would be a simple shell --- possibly an ivory or cream, or maybe a brighter colour like the pink you wear so well.

For these jackets with the short collar and buckle? at the top I would use a Vneck or maybe a fine tshirt. The jacket is the hero and the shirt under doesn't need to be. But for bling, maybe sequin Tshirt? The last jacket seems to need something to fill the V it makes so a cowl would match best. Is doesn't need ruffles. good luck. I am still struggling to find a way to wear a red jacket similar to your grey one here.!

Beautiful tops, Amy. I agree that #2 will be easy to style. I actually thing that #5 works, too, particularly if the top were to be tucked into pants or a skirt. The crispness of the fabric and the boxy cut of the jacket together kind of steal your waistline -- the tuck (with a matching belt) would restore it.

Do you have any really lightweight long sleeve knits to lay under #1? It could work. Also, this one could work with a v-neck cardi (which I seem to have a hard time finding).

I love the WHBM blazer --- so perfect for you in fit and style. I'm with some of the others. I thiink a simple knit tank or silky shell in black is great and simple -- even a cami just to provide a little coverage and allow you to open if when you're overly warm. I do think a solid pussy box like #2 might work.

I could really see you with a bright jacket and maybe a crisp pair of white trousers.

Gorgeous tops, love the color in #1 and the cut of #3 (when worn on its own). #2 seems like a great and versatile way to brighten up any "standard" suit-like jacket. I think all of of the suggestions for simple t-shirt type scoopneck tops to go with the jackets sound good. Would #2 work with the blue jacket?

I really like the green top! The jackets really need simple tops and I really like the linkd that Jeneva posted. That salsa colored scoopneck at AT is calling my name!

I love #3 if the crease is not caused by pulling. #1 and #2 are nice, but I think the small pattern is giving me pause. It does not look as modern. I think the jackets will work with any basic top.

I really like all of these on you, Amy! They seem like perfect tops for spring and summer, to wear tucked into skirts, or untucked with pants or clams. The colors look lovely on you, and I really like the black one too.

Love the tops - esp. the patterns. The solid black is just a bit boxy. Jacket in #7 is great on you!

The jackets in #5 and #6 seem to have a boxier shape to them. Esp. #5. (I love the jacket in #6). I wonder if you could do something that shows up longer under these two jackets (the #6 black top disappears into the pants). I'd also like to see #6 with a long pendant necklace to help create a more vertical line.

#2 is really really great. The others are nice also, just not as jaw-dropping as 2. That last jacket is really awesome, as well!

I love the colours and shapes of #1 and #2 - beautiful for under jackets. And I think the neckline of #3 is gorgeous on its own but doesn't quite work with a jacket. I love your outfit with the blue jacket. I think these could all be versatile pieces in your wardrobe.
