K/Pass on: summer dress

The oldies on the forum might still remember this silk crepe dress. The drawing is courtesy of DanaLynn who drew it when I first showed the dress on the forum. I'm fitting into it again, but I don't really have the pieces to wear it with. Also, this needs some covering on top, I feel way too bare with this as it is (no bra possible). I guess I could see it with some dainty sandals and an airy knit pullover on top. Should I hold on to it for now? Or pass it on?

It looks SO pretty on you, Astrid. Is it possible you might wear it on a beach-y vacation? If that is a possibility, I would keep it. That is the only time I *might* consider not wearing a bra (but I've got lazy girls!) You certainly don't look too bare--although I can understand how you might feel that way.

Well congratulations for fitting into it again. I like it on you. I ALWAYS have trouble "seeing" possibilities out of season. I think your ideas are good as to options. I could also see it with a shrug or a blue denim jacket even cream denim?

I am thinking that on a hot summer day very soon, this dress is going to call your name and say, "Wear Me!" Please. And you will know exactly what it needs!

It is a lovely summer dress and it fits you well. Can you wear it with a strapless bra?
I would try it with a cropped faded/white denim jacket and some espadrille sandals.

I love how it plays with your pixie cut, and in the photo at least your braless state isn't evident. I'd wait until high summer to decide on it, personally!

It does seem to fit you so well and it is a beautiful pattern and lovely colors.
I like some of the other suggestions of a strapless bra, paired with a light topper such as a cropped cardi or a denim jacket and you could also add a light solid scarf tied so it stays within the topper and kind of cascades over the chest area to give you some more coverage if that helps.

Thanks Kelly. I could certainly keep it for that. I don't have anything planned, but who knows...

Thanks quietgirl - I did try it with my denim vest and denim jacket, but I thought the denim was too "heavy" in comparison, even the light wash summer denim. This dress is so floaty... And I definitely can't wear my Birkenstock sandals with it, so I don't have shoes that go with it.

Thanks Tanya. I don't think I could find a bra that fits me (30DD/E and hard to fit) and is invisible with the dress. I don't really need the support, but I'm not comfortable like this, without some coverage. I could see espadrille sandals with it!

Thanks Eva. That's good to know! I guess I had it stored for so long, I can keep it a while longer until I make the decision...

Thanks Donna - not sure about the look with a denim jacket, see above. I guess a cardi would be an option, but it would be a very sweet look, maybe too sweet for everyday wear.

Hmm, if you do not need the bra support, and it is only a matter of coverage, then you could sew in simple bra cups:

The dress seems lined, so the sewing should be fairly simple. I have added those into couple of summer dresses for modesty reasons and it worked really well.

Re:the bra. It looks fine as is but I understand the comfort issue. Would a simple bandeau (or tube top) work? Otherwise, sewing cups in like Tanya mentioned is a possibility too.

It looks very pretty on you and suits you very well! I would try Tanya's cups idea too, just the very thin ones like you'd find "for modesty" in a bathing suit.

I really like it Astrid - it fits so well. I was going to make the same suggestion as Tanya. Do you have any cropped pullovers in linen or cotton to try with it? They may be less "sweet" than a cardigan.

The dress fits you quite well and looks lovely. It does seem a little outside your usual looks, maybe either due to level of comfort or change in your style? If you decide to keep it, a pullover and sandals sounds perfect for styling. But if you have to invest in layers and shoes just to make it work, make sure you love it.

Thanks everyone! I definitely like the idea of a lightweight cropped summer sweater. I don't want to buy things especially to make this dress work, but I'll try to keep the dress in mind with future purchases.

@Dee, this dress is from a time when I didn't have a personal style as such, the things I was wearing were allover the place.

Definitely keep it. It's going to be possible to wear in high summer with a little ingenuity. I like the idea of sewing cups in for coverage/ modesty, and a light cropped sweater or denim jacket. I understand what you say about the textures. Sometimes I feel that way about fabrics fighting, too -- it's a "seasonal confusion" feeling. But a really softened light wash denim or white denim might not feel so jarring with the floaty fabric. And you can keep your eyes open for something like that over time. This dress won't go out of style -- it's a summer classic.

It's a beautiful dress on you, Astrid, and you've had plenty of suggestions for cover-ups. I'd keep it, for sure.

I like it as well, but I think I'd like it better if it was 1-2 inches shorter (if it hit at the knee.) I think the current length isn't the most flattering for you. Maybe it is aging you somehow, especially if you are going to wear it with flat shoes/sandals.

Thanks Kirstjen - I don't want to alter it for now, I first want to see what shoes and cover up I end up with. I agree with you that usually a tad shorter is more flattering on me, but this dress is so floaty it doesn't look that bad IRL.

That dress is so flattering! Do you have a gauzy shawl or scarf? You could drape it when you need coverage or warmth or wrap it around your neck and let the ends dangle in front for "modesty" or coverage. But it looks great as is.
