Knock off the AT luxe poncho

I just got my Angie-approved luxe AT poncho--LOVE! Very fluid. Didn't stump-ify or overwhelm me at all. Lovely fabric. Wrinkles steamed out easily.

But what a simple design. My size ex/s is about 29 inches long by 25 inches wide. The way you'd make it is to fold 50 inches of fabric that has finished raw edges. The fold is your shoulder seam for your non-dominant arm. The top is left open from the fold for 12 inches, for your head, and the balance is seamed. That's it. It is a slight rectangle, with finished edges and a single seam.

What do you mean by "Knock off...." in the title? I didn't think the poncho was a knock-off - or is it?

Angie, I think she means she is giving measurements and instructions on how to knock it off - make it yourself.

I tried on that poncho the other day and really liked it, even though I ended up buying a different one. If I decide to commit a little more to the poncho trend, I would go back for this one. The simplicity, softness and drape make it really appealing. It looks great on you!

Your comment about how simple the design is makes me wonder about reworking a large scarf into a poncho (I know others have posted on that topic). It also makes me side-eye some of the exhorbitant pricing I see on ponchos, considering how easy they are to make!

Just looked at it online, I like it a lot and of course in your pic. I like how you put the statement necklace to break up the black. If I were gonna get a poncho this may be it.

What a perfect poncho! I've been eyeing this one, just not sure it would see much action...the rain will be coming soon then it's all raincoats and umbrellas. It would be fun to experiment with making one...a fun DIY project:)

Yes, exactly. "Knock off" was in the sense of fabricating one, assuming the right sort of fabric could be found, due to the genius simplicity of the design.

This is going to function for me like a jacket, for work, and I think it will also work with jeans or more casual wear, as well, so I'm really excited that this worked. I think the key for short me is fluid, non-bulky fabric. Pattern and texture or structure from a woven woolen probably would have been a fail.

KikiG, I am with you. This is one of the first ponchos at a decent price point that has caught my eye, for the exact reasons you mentioned. I can't handle bulky fabrics and need a bit of fluidity, but not TOO much that it just adds bulk to ME. For me, too, I prefer solids in this type of garment - stripes or pattern would be too much going on for me I think.

Oh, ha. What is the material? I'm wondering if one could do this with something like a cheap pashmina-type scarf, or is it a more substantial fabric?

Diane, it is a thin, lightweight, fine gage, wool blend knit, and it feels like it has a bit of fur in the mix. It isn't as heavy as a wool jersey typically is. If it were a sweater, I'd probably need a cami under it or my bra would shadow, to give you an idea. I think pashima-type or wool challis type fabric is probably right for drape, but I haven't worked out in my head yet how I'd finish the fringed edge (or if I would). I may have to experiment with something inexpensive to see what could be done.
