Knitters- Who's Knitting a Cape?

I have had cape on the brain for a while now, but after Angie's post this morning- I went looking for knitting patterns. I think that I have enough yarn already to make this one from Knitty:

Anyone else wanting to knit a cape for fall? How about a Cape-A-Long??
Angie, I'd love your thoughts on this particular cape.

Not me, but when I first started knitting I bought this pattern and never used it. I guess it's more of a poncho than a cape, but it just looks so warm and cozy... and completely wrong for my current AZ weather. I ended up using the yarn that was meant for the cape/poncho to make a throw blanket.

Right now I'm contemplating trying to knit a version of this Theory pullover... It would take some trial and error (I don't have a pattern), but I think that I could figure it out. Blocking (and accounting for blocking when I knit it) would be the really hard part.

No a knitter but that is a gorgeous style and has lots of ilnteresting details, can't wait to see it

Edit: Love the poncho and top too. So interesting...

I've thought about it, but I can't find a pattern for one that won't swallow me up ... I have pretty much the worst body type for capes (sloping shoulders, short neck, short defined waist). Maybe a capelet...

I was thinking the same thing after Angie's post, but sewing one. There's a cute New Look pattern from a while ago, MPJ, that I was thinking of making - it must be out of print because the only one I can find is this one, which isn't it but is cute and looks easy.

That's a gorgeous cape, Khris! I have belting issues otherwise I'd join you. I've had several cape/poncho things in my queue but haven't gotten around to making any of them. I did make the poncho/sweater last year and it turned out to be pretty wearable for soccer games and stuff. Not everyone's cuppa, for sure.

Love the New Look cape pattern and can totally see Laura rocking that one!

I just had a thought (I know, hold the phones!). I posted on Angie's blog post that I'd always found capes a little impractical, but then it occurred to me that I'd been wanting a better jacket/coat to wear to hockey games. You don't always need something heavy (at least around here) but it is cool at the rink; you don't want anything long and bulky when you're sitting either, and having your arms free is not the end of the world either since most of the time you are just sitting, and maybe eating. A cape might be just the ticket. I think it's time for me to search the fabric stash and see if anything would suit.

I knit a lot but there's no way i would have time to make a cape or a sweater sadly. Last year i have my hands full (literally!) keeping my shop stocked, making Christmas gifts and still working my regular job and keeping up with my normal life lol. I've already started on some projects for my shop reopen in the fall (and have been asked why i am knitting a hat when it's 90 degrees out haha).

Whoever DOES make one though, please share! I love oogling over other peoples projects!!

Kate- blocking isn't difficult, and with such a stretchy stitch pattern, it gives you lots of room for tweaking the fit. I have actually been contemplating a similar knit- based on a tunic at Old Navy

It looks like the sweater in you pictures is knit is a simple YO K2tog pattern. I have made market bags with that type of pattern and they come out great.
MPJ- great pattern. I love it in the plaid, especially.
Laura- another nice pattern.
Kelly- I like that one, too.
Nicole- I stopped knitting for anyone else a long time ago. I am strictly a selfish knitter now.
I swatched at the park, now I just need to measure and see where I am at with it.

Good for you! I am slowly trying to wean people from just assuming because i can knit that i will make them things. It kind of surprises me how people just...expect it? It helps now that i have my shop so i can give the line that if i have time i'll put in up for sale and let them know.

But i'm ok with the shop stuff because it makes me extra $ to buy selfish things and Christmas presents because it saves my family a lot of $ on relatives.

i knitted this basket weave cape, but looked like i was wearing the liberty bell.

i just gave it away yesterday. i want to knit the oversized sweater from wool and the gang.

Well MPJ, my gauge was off, so I am re-knitting the swatch. I have always had a fascination with seed stitch, so once I start I think it will go pretty fast.

Chrisy- are you going to add some fur trim?

Of course, I also have a scarf and dish cloths that I am working on (or not). Sometimes when I am having a flare up, I just can't knit. I hate that.

I would absolutey add (faux) fur trim - I think that's what makes this so fun! Mind you, I have absolutely no idea at the moment how I'd do that, but I'm going to spend some time this weekend trying to work out a pattern and see if it's even worthwhile. I doubt I'd be able to make it for much less than the sale price since it would take a fair amount of yarn and I have a tendency to favor the spendier yarns! But it might be fun!

I think you could just sew it on after the fact. I don't even add up costs anymore. Knitting is my hobby, I'm not trying to save money by knitting rather than buying. If I get a wearable garment when I'm done- great. If not, the experience was worth it and I can always frog and re-use the yarn.
My second swatch is still off, so I am going down another needle size.

I just couldn't get gauge for that pattern with my yarn, so I am sort of winging it. I started as a top down raglan. I'll probably make belt holes when I get there, and I will pick up and add a collar and front edging when I am done. I'm really enjoying the knit so far. I think that I have about 5 inches down now.
MPJ I saw that one, too- so cute! It would swallow up my short neck, but it's such a fun style.

I'd probably have to shorten it but it actually seems like it might not swallow me up like most cape patterns... plus it has waist definition and a non-choking neck!
