knitters, seen this effect?

Stumbled on this on Pinterest. Didn't link anywhere. No information. I thought it was a brilliant way to suggest an hourglass figure. Have looked through about 20 pages of Ravelry cable knit patterns already and saw nothing like it. Anyone know anything about it or what this kind of over cable would be called?

I'm guessing the big cable is an applique that you knit separately and sew on top of the second cabled panel. I haven't seen any patterns like it though.

Vildy, I think it is a variation on a travelling cable. However, what I really think is that it may be an applied cable! It sits up off the surface of the sweater and I think I see a bit of pulling where it is stitched onto the sweater. What do you think? Also, I think Diana's recent cable sweater has a similar effect, but with it knit into the actual sweater.

ETA, cross posted with Diana! I see we both came to the same conclusion. But still, look at the traveling cable on Diana's sweater in this post, which creates a similar effect, although more subtly.

oohh, I was thinking about applique. I can do cables but when I tried to get my mind around the second level, I felt practically dizzy.

Yes I think it's applied on top too. I would guess that it's two pieces of stocking stitch twisted over each other and sewn on top. Great effect.

These are mittens but they have a similar layered cable effect that is achieved in this case by knitting two layers. Might be a lot of work for a sweater though!

I cannot tell from the top of the sweater but it looks like an appliqué to me.

well knowing the term "traveling cable" let me search some more. Came up with nothing new on it except more instances of the same picture. There was a store site but I think it was too old and wanted to lock up my computer. Then I found a site where people ask where they can find things. A number of instances of asking about the same picture and no worthwhile answers.

But appliqueing sure does seem easier.

Here is a definition of a traveling cable.

A Travelling Cable usually involves two different parts: the rope-like stocking-stitch part that is referred to as the cable, and one or more stitches of the background of reverse stocking stitch.

The Travelling Cable "travels" by moving one of the background purl stitches from one side of the cable to the other.
