Hi Larry, and everyone. Maybe this thread is dead now, but just wanted to respond having just seen it. First of all tall boots for men are just so practical and comfortable, and I enjoy wearing them whenever I can, but I find it very difficult to find ones that fit and look right. But when I do I more or less live in them. Tall boots are unusual on men these days, unless they are for horse or bike riding or country pursuits, but at one time they were very common. Like so many styles tall boots have been "borrowed" by women from men's common apparel and, having become women's garb, they are now verboten for men in the minds of many. Such a shame! Don't think that I'm complaining, because I really like boots on women and I'm so glad they are back in fashion and so plentiful in the shops. I find them amazingly appealing. Their return to fashion actually helps men who want to wear them because there are so many women's boots that would not look out of place on a man, particularly the flat soled styles, perhaps with a combat, military or biker edge, but also the more fashionable androgynous styles work well, if you have the courage. Perhaps go for a style that harks back to men's footwear of a previous era, say before the last war, when they were very common on men. The tricky bit is finding them.
I agree with you Larry that current men's high street shoes and shoe shops are so awful. I have not bought shoes from an actual shop for nearly ten years mainly because I can never find anything I like and the selection is so small. Especially compared with the women's side of the shop which I often look at with envy. Now I always buy on line and have the most comfortable and pleasing shoes and boots I have ever owned. And mostly from the women's ranges, always with flat manly heels and a bit of edgy style, and I am always on the lookout for more. Also my feet have been more comfortable than ever before and I get so much better arch support with women's boots. So, men, what's all the fuss about? If you like a boot go and buy it and wear it. And ignore people who can't hack it, it's their insecurity and narrow-mindedness giving them a hard time. Go for it. Colin.
