I feel kind of dumb posting this but do you cat people have a preferred cat litter? I've been using the lemon grass one from Costco but wanted to find one available closer to home. I don't like the "bark" ones or natural stuff--I tried it and hated it. I also didn't like the scoop your own stuff from Petco. So many brands out there that I can never decide. TIA!

I have tried many and have finally settled on Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Litter. Don't know if Costco carries it, but Pesmart definitely does. It clumps better than any other litter and is virtually dust-free. In combination with this litterbox, our cat is finally happy and not tempted to go outside the box.

I use Arm and Hammer corn-based litter. It's been working well for me, despite the trials of a persnickety elderly cat. Surely five litter boxes scooped morning and night for two cats is enough?!

Fresh Step over here. But not the extreme version - it has a lemony smell that is terrible to my and my BF's nose!

Used to have 2 kitties, now 1, and using it for 13 years now.

We use this one -- it's made of pine. But I guess if you don't like the natural ones that won't do.

Miss DuBois likes "Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract". It seems to help cut back on her 'thinking outside of the box' if you know what I mean.

I knew I could count on YLF! Thanks for the recommendations. I'm going to start with the Arm and Hammer and then go from there. I had tried Fresh Step when we first got Davey but the perfume almost made me pass out. I'm also going to look at unscented Fresh Step. As I recall, it worked well except for the smell. If all else fails, I will try the Dr. Elsey's but my goal here is to reduce the number of stores that I have to go to--every one in the family has their "favorite" things so it's Walmart, Target, Safeway, Trader Joe's, Specialty Pet store for Davey's hoitey toitey high protein cat food, etc. I feel like grocery shopping is a full time job!

@Ceit: I'm sorry you aren't kidding! That's a lot of litter and a lot of cleaning! I scoop daily for one cat and one litter box. Someone told me I should have a box upstairs and downstairs but I feel like I grew up in a home with three people and only had one bathroom--surely more than one box per is a luxury!

@Suz: I couldn't get used to the fact that it didn't clump very well. The smell was pleasant though. Maybe the Canadian version is better

I don't think there is a perfect cat litter, but my favorite is Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra Scoopable. My petsitter told me about it, and she's worked with every cat litter under the sun.

My second choice is Fresh and Natural Scoopable.

I think it is partially just my poor old Tia is getting a bit senile, and if there is anything in a box, she won't go in it until it is cleaned. I also hae to watch papers and plastic bags bexause those she will preferentially pee on! My boycat Rollie is much less fussy thank goodness.

Bought the Arm and Hammer. It sure is light compared to the clay litter. Do you think I should mix it in with the clay or just start with a whole new box of the new stuff?

I mixed mine in when switching over from clay clumping litter. As a bonus, it almost eliminates the clay dust if you mix some in to the clay.

Thanks, Ceit! I will mix it. I still can't get over how light the bag is. Fingers crossed that Davey likes it enough to poo in it! LOL!

Hope it works! If not, try Everclean. It's clumps very hard and is the only brand we've used for years. Great stuff.

My cat loves Cat's Pride. He's been using it for 17 years, and it's the only brand he's happy with. I don't know what I'll do if they go out of business!

Thanks, Karie! I've been thinking about rotating it a bit myself. Davey's food got recalled recently and I was kicking myself for not switching it up a little. I've heard that cats can be incredibly finicky and sometimes won't eat different food. Sounds like cat litter can be the same. Thanks for the recommendation. Adding it to the list

Just a quick update. I bought a couple of bags of the Arm and Hammer Corn based litter. It works great except for it is little messy compared to the clay litter. It is so light that he tracks it around the box and I find little flakes of it on the stairs/carpet. Pros: Smells great, lasts a long time, hides odors. Will be changing out the box next week and will try next on the list. Thanks for all of the recs!
