I discovered there is a promo code for 15% off when you sign up for their email list, so I decided to try the Kit and Ace long jacket. It had been sticking in my mind for long enough that it felt like a good bet, or at least something to get out of my mind if it didn't work. With free returns I figured it was worth the try.

It was delivered yesterday (so quick!), and I got a chance to try it on very briefly. So far I have to say upon a very quick first impression that it's really good. Fit seems good (I took a M and it seems TTS), fabric is lovely -- not too heavy, doesn't wrinkle. I kind of love the high side vents. The plaid is in shades of mid-light grey with a small stripe of subtle brownish-reddish color, just enough to add a little interest without looking like it will have to "match." It seems like it would be a great piece for travel (when we can do such things again). I'll do a try-on session later and post pics and further analysis!

Janet-it looks so interesting, tailored yet a easy care. But wondering, Angie’s note called it a blazer, yet from the Kit and Ace site, it seems more like outerwear. Wondering what your thoughts are.

LOL - about your travel comment! I just picked up two items, and thought to myself ‘these will be great travel items’. Later I went down the hole of Pinterest airport outfits, and fell asleep imagining what I’d pack for a trip! There’s a voucher for air travel from a canceled 2020 trip burning a hole in my pocket! Maybe a late winter get away to somewhere warm a year from now?

I like the colour of the coat and think it could be genius with your natural hair colour.

Kkards, I’d definitely categorize it more as outerwear but it’s lightweight enough, even with the lining, that I think it can be a good outfit completer depending on the environment and activity. It’s nicely fluid!

I love long, lightweight toppers and have about two weeks of the year when it makes sense to wear them. The colors on this one are great, and I think the side slits could keep it from feeling too much like outerwear if you wanted to style it as a dramatically long blazer...

And yes to fantasy travel capsules! I've been doing the same as Runcarla.

I love the drama of a long topper and this one is gorgeous in gray/charcoal plaid. Easy care and machine washable too. Great score, Janet!

Ok, pics added. I just put it on over my burgundy Dre jeans and cream hoodie (with a Uniqlo Airism tee underneath) and Sperry boots.

I think it looks a little bigger in pics than in person? Especially in side view. It’s roomy in the middle but I can’t size down because, well, hips. And the shoulder fit is good so I can’t go down there either. I think this is how it’s supposed to fit, and I do have another long topper with a very similar fit. I think the long side vents help mitigate the roominess on my body type, but please tell me if you see unflattering here. I do love how it feels. I think it’s one of those things that looks better in motion than it photographs. Or maybe I’m not used to this much plaid on my body. I also wouldn’t mind a slightly higher stance even though I know this low stance is current.

A very interesting and current piece. I think I’d love it if it were regular to longish blazer length. But this isn’t a jacket I personally would wear for outside warmth (deep v not covering torso and loose fit allowing entry of cold air), color (big swath of light neutral, and also not my gray), or practicality (not really a raincoat or dress coat or trench or party wear).

However, your mileage may vary, and just giving you the things that come up in my head about it.

cjh, interesting. I don't really need raincoat or dress coat or trench or party wear! This would be more of an everyday-type topper piece, so actually more practical for me than the types you mention (my raincoats are sporty, and my one trench that I do love is a bit more on the dressy side). I actually like the length because it's distinctive and dramatic. I love a good long blazer too, but my need for a piece as formal as a blazer is limited. I don't necessarily mind this for the level of outside warmth I need (I use scarves to fill in necklines and cover torso anyway since I tend to vary in my temperature and often wear my toppers open) -- I suspect I'd find it useful on days in the mid 40's to 60ish, depending on what I layer underneath, and we do have those often enough in the late fall, winter, and early spring here.

Hmm, I have a long swacket in a tweed pattern — I like wearing it as a third piece, as a more casual alternative to a blazer. I think this would serve the same purpose, rather than being Outerwear.

I should probably give a couple of points of clarification:

1) I don't wear cardigans, so anything like a soft jacket or unstructured blazer works like a cardigan for me (a refined zip front hoodie is good too, and I should probably invest in another, I only have two and one is getting worn out)

2) casual pieces like this that bridge indoor/outdoor wear are really useful for me because I'm often out and about -- errands, meetings, etc. Not so much at home of course, but I am assuming that we aren't going to be staying home all the time so much forever. I have some longer jackets/light coats that are a bit dressier than this, and they often feel a bit *too* dressy for this stage of my life. They are dry clean only type pieces. I like that this is washable and slightly sporty.

I have to be honest - am I ever not ? - I don’t love it on you for a few reasons - The lapel is one of them , and I’ve seen you in coats that are far more flattering ...?

I like the coat on you - something different from traditional and not fussy
( if I may put it like that ). The length looks great on you and color/print neutral enough for playing other colors for add-on.
Would love to see it combined with sweater in cobalt color plus blue jeans, or with your fab printed scarfs. Lots of possibilities.

Hmm.
It’s not jumping out as wowsers, but certainly not all items have to be that. I wish I could my finger on why not, as for outfit lab, or , like this, but more ...Something related to the flat colors, the encircling squares of plaid, the straight cut, maybe the stance.
But, washable is good and becoming way more important to me. Also you’re likely to wear slim- fitting jeans or pants , which work with it.

Janet, for me something in the chest area is off, maybe stance is too low or it’s too open.
On another hand, you should try to style it with different pieces from your wardrobe. Maybe it’s styling.

I like it a lot overall, but I feel that there is a little too much fabric in the torso somehow. To me, the shoulders look a tiny bit too big. Is there a way you can photograph it from the back?

I find Irina's comment interesting about the stance. I wonder if there is a way you could test that theory by trying to pin the stance higher up, to see what that looks like?

I was going to hold back because I’m never sure about the etiquette in this situation. I always think if the poster loves it and has a use for it, that’s enough. Tastes will differ.

But as I think we have some commonality in our style preferences, and as Lisa bravely jumped in, I will also admit I don’t love it on you. The cut is too boxy and the overall vibe too masculine for you. I think. What does DH think? Keep in mind that not everything photographs well. You might be seeing something different. You should trust your own instincts.

Yes, as Brooklyn said : if it strikes you as great , then trust yourself . I think anytime there’s a question - I err on the side of caution. And I only make honest comments when opinions are solicited .

I love it on you and it sounds like it suits your life really well (practical, works beautifully with your hair and coloring, travels well, casual but polished and interesting). It seems like it fits like it's supposed to--it's not meant to be a fitted or tapered shape. And, the subtle volume through the body is tempered nicely by the slim-fitting sleeves, IMHO. But I have a huge sugar eye for plaid topcoats and looser fits, so keep that in mind :).

Hmm, tricky. I love the drama of the silhouette and am so impressed with how beautifully the plaid lines up. That is truly the mark of a quality garment to my eyes. But I often wear things that they make me look bigger than I am, and this does have that effect from some angles on you - at least in photos. I just don't think that it is a deal breaker. I would wear it outdoors in the 60s - 70s but I run cold.

I am with Shevia. I want to see it styled a bunch of ways. I also want to know -- (to Irina's point re stance) -- would you mostly wear open? If so, I can imagine it, with the vents, in motion, and I think it would be brilliant. But closed...not so sure.

Also, it's true, the plaid is a bit masculine for your style maybe. But -- As Lisa said, if you love and if Jamie loves, I trust that 300%. You know what your needs are, what hole this fills, and you see it in motion. As for me, I am in love with the idea of it and tempted to order one!

Plus, oh, I like the colours on you with your hair/ eyes!

I agree with you on the slightly higher stance, but other than that, I think it looks great!

Is it lightweight enough to treat it as a coat dress? With leggings/skinnies and a belt to make it more intentional for indoors?
