Moms with little girls - what is your solution to looking after their hair?

My LG is nearly 8, with amazing long thick hair that hangs down to the middle of her back. Unfortunately it is the source of loads of tears and fighting. I think she is getting to an age where she wants to start taking care of her own hair, but she can't quite manage it herself and looks like a real little ragamuffin most of the time, unless her hair is tied up in a pony or braided. DH calls her Cousin It from Addams Family

We were thinking of cutting it into a bob like #2.

Any tips?

Hil, I have a 10 year old son who is very into his hair! I love the cut in #2 for a little girl. Its pretty and feminine and kind of cool for child without making them look too grown up. What does she think?

She likes it Deb. I guess that was my concern - I don't want her to have something too grown up. I am off to the salon for my hair tomorrow and I was thinking of booking her a cut too.

My (almost) 10 year old is VERY into his hair - gel is on our monthly toiletry shopping list and he loves spikes and mohawks and all sorts.

This brings me back to the sore spot in my childhood when my mother decided she would not wrestly my tangles any longer and made me get a shag haircut (it was 1976). It was quite awful and I looked like a boy for 2 years until it grew out some (I was even often mistaken for a boy) I'm still traumatized, but if your DD is consulted (I was not) and agrees it sounds like a good idea. I'd also consider investing in her own hair products (good ones make a difference in how hair behaves) like detangling spray etc.. and a good comb/brush so she can care for it.

My daughter went through a short phase where she objected every time I tried to brush her hair. I think she was six or seven. After a few episodes of this, I took out the kitchen scissors, and said, All right then, what's it going to be, a cute bob or you let me brush out your tangles? I must have had a dangerous look in my eye, because she quickly submitted to the brushing.

The odd occasion since then she complains a little, I reply with, Well you know the alternative. That always quiets her down quickly. Unfortunately she's not ready for that cute bob!

(She's nine now, btw).

My daughter seems to have lucked out and while she has fine thin hair, the tangles pretty much fall out by themselves. I did just give her her first haircut at 3.5 because there were some long scraggles at the back from her baby hair. So now it is blunt cut across instead of V shaped. She actually wanted it shorter, but I'll wait a bit on that.

Your DD's hair, and the tears over it, sound much like mine, also 7. But mine won't go for the bob! I'd do it in a heartbeat. I've threatened the chop chop many times but clearly my threats are empty and she knows it.
Have you tried brushing and braiding before bead? This lessens the morning stress, at least, and my DD likes the wave effect. Some days we just leave the braids in, they look a little messy, that's OK.
Satin pillowcases apparently help.
I bought my DD a new big flat brush and we are working towards her taking care of her own hair. I've seen some of her peers (who have beautiful long hair that never seems to get messy) dealing with their own hair, after swimming for example, and they are quite capable. For us, it is definitely a work in progress. She still gets quite frustrated!

#2 is not too grown up at all. It's very sweet.

I have the same problem with my daughter, who has the most gorgeous hair, but she doesn't take very good care of it, and won't let me do too much to it. I've suggested getting it cut shorter, but she really doesn't want to. *sigh*

My LGs are quite a bit younger than yours, but

1) detangling spray works wonders for us

2) My almost-5 year old can pull her hair into a loose ponytail or use a headband or barrettes, and she's getting good at brushing it. And her motor skills aren't that great, so I do think it's doable. I'm teaching her to pull the length over her shoulder to reach the ends. She hasn't had her first haircut yet, since she spent the first two years of her life being called a boy, even though now the longest part of her hair does reach the middle of her back.

3) A slightly longer version of the bob you posted is QUITE popular among young girls of all ages in my area, so I don't think you'd have to worry about her getting made fun of.

4) But your LG's hair is so thick, I'd want to make sure it would lay like that. I already told my oldest that she could cut her hair like a friend, but her thick curly hair would never look the same as her friend's thinner and very straight hair.

If you choose to get her hair cut, I'd definitely get input from her and a hairdresser. I too had a HORRIBLE haircut at 8 years old, forced because another child cut a chunk out of my hair. Not fun, not pretty.

We used to buy detangling spray - but I have started refilling the spray bottle with "home made" detangler, which is just a little conditioner mixed with water. Seems fairly effective

I cut my daughter's hair myself, and have always cut it in a bob - like #2, but with bangs and a bit asymmetrical to the back so it has a slight "wedge" (not sure the proper term) in the back. I love it on her, to tell you the truth, and she always gets loads of compliments. We use conditioner when we shampoo, and the tangles really aren't that bad. Better yet, we have never had lice! Her hair is fine, but her cousin with thicker hair has the same haircut and it's adorable on her.

lol.. I completely understand what u mean! My daughter is almost 11 and her hair is long and super thick. I make her use a really good conditioner, brush it every night, make her sleep in a pony tail and even put a leave in conditioner in it as well. It's gorgeous, just a lot of maintenance! Try those things I do, it really improved the condition of her hair! I will provide some before and after pics. Before pic last, as it was older on my phone.

The last pic was when her hair was a complete disaster! Even brushed, it was just so knotty and a frizzy mess! Now its silky, soft and tangle free

I don't think u should cut it. Try the tips I provided first. I also thought about cutting my daughter's hair, but she begged me not too! My mother is a hair stylist, so she convinced me not too and gave me some great advice.

Thanks for all the feedback! We do the flat paddle brush, detangler etc and we always condition.

It is funny how our childhood memories influence us. I had the same thick straight hair as she does, except it was a lot longer. Washing and brushing was always such a mission and I only ever wore it braided to avoid tangling. When my mom finally relented and let me chop it into a bob at age 10 or 11 I was ecstatic. I wished that she would have let me do it earlier!

Our hairdresser appointment is tomorrow and I've told her it is her decision. We will see

Oh I remember the tears! My oldest hated having her hair combed so I gave her the choice to put up with it or cut it. She chose the cut and a pixie cut to boot. She was adorable and unique and has been ever since!
