There are quite a few places where one can send clothing, but what to do with the other stuff? I recently had some success donating household items to what I consider unusual places. Maybe we can make a list to share?

Sports gear/bicycles - sold through a sports store swap and sale 80% cash or 100% store credit). I will be sending off winter sports gear when they announce their F/W event

Towels - half a dozen old towels to the local community center swimming pool. It is a common enough occurrence for folks/kids to forget to bring a towel.

Antique furniture - the local Architectural Conservancy group holds an annual fundraiser auction, and I know these items will go to a good home.

Old light fixture, sink, and some leftover 'new' building materials - Habitat for Humanity ReStore

Books - library accepted some for their collection, and kept others for fundraiser book sale. A second hand book seller accepted paperbacks, and gave me store credit.

In cases of the heavier items, they came to the house with a big truck and some strong men, and took the stuff away.

I don't have little kids any more, but when the DS's were small, one of them had an accident at school and came home in a pair of 'new to him' sweatpants with his wet pants rolled up in a plastic bag. I learned the school had a box of clothes for just such incidents. Sweatpants were favoured because they fit a variety of body shapes. Some hospitals keep a selection of easy clothes since sometimes they have to cut clothes off of a patient who might not have anything to wear when he/she is discharged.

Have you found any creative ways to dispose of your cast offs?
