Keep your crops and your released hem jeans!

Every day this week I did a lunch hour speed walk through Toronto’s temple to shopping The Eaton Centre, as well as the flagship Hudson’s Bay and trendy Queen St. Christmas decor is going up and the mannequins are all getting makeovers. Guess what they’re wearing?

Cropped trousers
Released hem jeans (a lot of black)
Velvet (or velour) jackets, tops, dresses
Brocade
Dark florals
Statement footwear (and satin, velvet, brocade, lame)
Socks

I hacked my black jeans summer of ‘15 and have been wearing them steady since. Now I’m seeing identical on the street! I get the feeling shoes are going narrow toe again, but with the block heel, and ankle strap, and even some high vamp loafer styling. Angie can correct me if I’m wrong.

Cropped jeans make sense in Toronto in the winter. The streets are so slushy. Thank goodness they are wearing socks! Full-length jeans are my favourite but I wonder if they are going to be less popular.

As lovely as long billowy pant legs might be, they're so impractical for Ontario winters. They soak up the slush, get stained and damaged by salt, and remain wet throughout the day. Pass.

Good to know - I just made my first foray into the released hem arena with a subtle dark wash (DIY that was a tad too short). I really like it, and they are new so I'd like to get some longevity. I've been hesitant to buy them as I have seen them for so long on YFL.

DH just pulled them from the washer to hang dry and said - "did the hem come out of these?"

Here, the young women seem to be into high waisted cropped jeans this season - with sneakers, of course. Mature women’ looks are always more varied, so it’s hard to tell.

Well, I impressed with the speed walking!! How fabulous to do that on your lunch hour. Tell me how you orchestrate that? You obviously change shoes, but do you keep a set of work out clothes in the office as well? Or do you wear your work clothes?

LOL! Sterling - nothing athletic about it! Just a fast paced walk. My office is in a tower in the insurance/banking/financial district and I need 10-15 min. in order to reach the interesting shopping areas. Once I stopped getting lost, I figured out how far I could venture out before I had to turn around. Still, by the time I get back, I'm usually pretty warm! It took me 5 days of quick trips to do enough reconnaissance that I could discern patterns in the wares on display.

Oh I'm so glad I read past the first line. I thought you were going to say, "You can keep your crops... I have discovered full length pants and I'm not looking back" Boy am I glad I was wrong. There is nothing so practical as crops for a Canadian winter. Anything that doesn't drag in the slush when I'm outdoors is sure to reveal my ankles when I sit down indoors, so I'm glad that socks are going to be an accepted part of the picture too. I recently discovered that men's crew socks are long enough to prevent a skin gap when I'm wearing true crops.

You sure bring back memories too. When I was in med school I walked through the Eaton Centre twice a day, between my apartment and the hospital, and loved seeing the new season's styles and the Christmas decorations coming out. (I read Colour Me Beautiful, a chapter at a time, in the Eaton's basement level, if you want to place it in time.)

Always happy to see that more than one length is in fashion. Not only for pants, but also for dresses, skirts, jackets and coats. Variety is much appreciated.
