I was going through some closets that I don't normally go through, and I found this old Burberry trench coat. I bought it off ebay. It's probably from the 80's. A little faded, and the belt and sleeves had been shortened. I had the sleeves let out and it fits well. But, does it look frumpy/weird/old? Or does it look cool and vintage? I need a light-colored spring coat.

Please excuse the lack of shoes, make-up, etc.

It looks a bit long on you. Plus it I think it might be soul-sucking beige.

Looks like a Burberry classic...I say keep.! Throw on a colerful scarf!

I love the length and it looks very classic. I agree to keep some better color near the face but I'd keep it.

I'd keep it, but as others have suggested - add some other colour near your face.

It looks like a great fit, but I think it would look more current shortened to above the knee. If you look on the Burberry website you might get some inspiration from the current collection. The cost of these coats is astronomical, so if you can make it work for you with another minor alteration I think it would be a good deal.

I think if you shorten it a bit and put some color by your face, it will look fantabulous!

I love it. And I actually love the longer length on you for some reason. You remind me of Cary Grant or the Pink Panther or someone from an old movie, and I mean that in a good way.

Keep, but alter. Maybe not as short as a 3/4 coat, but just a bit shorter to fit you height.

Mine is only 2 yrs. old and looks very similar to this...longer length too.Looks fab with boots!
I often~ button back ~both sides...so it opens it up to show my outfit.. usually all black with colorful ~scarf , handbag, shoes~..scrunch the sleeves , pop the collar and people literally chase me down.
Some folks actually get the classic look:)
Needs to be styled with a bit of edge and attitude to make it come alive!

Thanks for the input. I should note that I already requested my lovely (very Italian) tailoress to shorten it (when she did the sleeves) and she basically refused. I think because of the inverted pleat and tab in the back this is a complicated alteration...so I'd rather just get a new trench than have this one taken up.

I think I will keep it and try wearing it around and see how it goes.

I think it's a MINDBOGGLINGLY AWESOME forgotten closet find! Definitely a keeper, and I think the colour is more stone than beige possibly? AT least that's what I see on my monitor.

All it needs is a swish of colour from either bright make-up (you could even have neutral clothes with that) or a scarf or collar and cuffs that peek out to take this that last mile from stylish polish to unbeatable fabulousness.

It's fantastic, Jeneva. It just needs to be worn with the right outfit/ attitude to mitigate the SS beige. I wouldn't worry about altering the length; with heels and/or boots, this will work, and how great to have a coat that will cover midi-length skirts.

I am not recommending this either way, but I just wanted to throw this out there as food for thought because I recently saw Brooklyn Blonde's blog about tailoring a trench coat and agree that her's works better after the tailoring her mother did for her.

Obviously, once you alter, there is no going back, and it would be tragic to have regretted doing so to a time tested classic, but if you will never wear it as is, then maybe a few tweaks will make all the difference.

I think you should definitely hang on to this, but maybe put it back in the closet until midi-length trenches come back in full force (which will be soon, I hope)! What an incredible, classic trench, wow! I agree that it needs full make-up and a bright scarf, but you could totally rock this!

Just chiming again to say I think you have the stature to pull off the length. I think it would be easier to judge though in a styled photo. (No shoes always makes it hard for me to judge things, also on myself.) I feel like this length coat is looking modern again. Call me crazy. This kind of thing always reminds me of that scene with Meryl Streep in a trench in Kramer vs. Kramer.

I think it's a wonderful classic, and I have no problem at all with the length. I'd throw on a colorful scarf and enjoy it!

The one little nit-picky detail that I would change is the little belt- thingies (what the heck are they called?) on the sleeves. It looks to me like they moved them up when they shortened the sleeves, and now I think they should be moved back down closer to the sleeve hems to look right.
But as I say, that's a detail, and maybe I'm the only one who notices such things.

Forgotten Burberry? Fab re-find! Definitely add a colourful scarf. If it's not too much cost wise to shorten, I might check into it, but I wouldn't do it if it's too expensive. Not a deal breaker.

LOVE the length. It fits well too, Jenava . It's vintage cool to my eye.

The only thing that gives me a little pause is the colour - but that could look better in real life (non-photo) and with a scarf!

Yes, the color is what had me put it away in the first place. I paid only $50 for this coat. It had a very, very faint coffee stain on it but it's even more faded once I'd had it cleaned. The color is even a bit greenish IRL, and I think it reads darker, too. I'll try to take another shot once I've got real clothes and makeup on.

Angie, your tentative approval at least on the fit and length is encouraging.
