I got handed down this dress (from some one I don't know very well) in January and just got around to asking about it.
It's clearly too big for me, but wonder if it might work in some way.
Not invested in it at all, be frank!

ETA. Pics from 7 onwards are after I took in the side and back seams. Kids and DH think it's better. I am still not sure if I like the dress at all. I hesitated to even put these up I think part of the issue, though, is that I just don't like my side and back views!

Gee, I like it. It’s loose but not so big. The proportions are flattering.

It’s pretty and a nice summer dress, do you think you could take it in to fit you? I would be hesitant to pay for it to be altered as local dressmakers are likely to charge about $60 to resize it, which is probably too much given you don’t love it.

Yeah I wouldn't pay for alterations. I might take it in myself since its pretty low stakes.

TG, it does have a stiff, self belt, but trust me, it looks really bad. My natural waist is below the waist seam, which usually happens, so the belt is below it, plus it kind of gathers in the fabric as it's loose.

I really like it - the print is pretty and its colors flatter your complexion. The length and neckline seem good, so if you are able to alter it so as it fits like in photo #5, I think the result would definitely great!

I like it. You could throw on a denim jacket for warmth if needed. It seems an easy wearable dress for church, a shower, baptism, any number of events.

I think it’s really pretty and looks good loose-fitting. I remember a dress I had like that in maybe mid-late 90s, a bit loose but oh so comfy. I wore it so many times I eventually tired of it. Just used to throw it on.

Very nice classic, I would just take in a bit on the side seams from under the armhole to bottom hem. I have done it with a few dresses due to weight loss and it works.

Looks like opinion is divided between taking in or leaving as is. DH is on the side of taking in and since he can see it in real life I am going to give it a go. Our very hot Easter temperatures are over and I seem to have energy to contemplate activity again.

I'd try pairing the dress with a few accessories before you commit to any alterations - often when we have doubts about new pieces, it's because we're having difficulty visualising how they'll fit into our preexisting wardrobe.

Also, how do you feel about taking the hem up a smidge? That's a side effect of you cinching in the waist in that photo, so it may help.

Zaeobi, I probably would not really wear much in the way of accessories. We have long hot summers here, and I would just wear it by itself.
I think I may take your advice re hemming though. DD14 also thinks I should shorten it.

If you're not comfortable with the fit or fabric, then you shouldn't keep it, but it LOOKS great on you. It is very flattering, and such a beautiful print. It really does look fab on you!

Ah @anne accessories don't have to be jewellery or anything extra - I suppose I meant styled how you would expect to be wearing it outside (with shoes & a bag, possibly a sunhat etc).

Hong Kong's summer humidity is regularly 85%+, so I live in natural & breathable fabrics then - you may wish to think about whether you can tolerate a polyester material in your summer.

I think it looks much better taken in. I think all views--front, side, and back--look great!

As far as the dress itself, I will admit that I don't have strong feelings for it one way or the other. I have seen you in more interesting items. If you don't love it, I would pass it on.

BEAUTIFUL alterations! Looks fab from all sides! Why give up something so flattering and versitile (and free?} Wear it casually in place of shorts to market or even around the house on weekends. I can see it paired with flat gladiator sandals. I actually like the length for versitile movement but there is room for hemming. Great fallback outfit when you don't know what to wear on the daily. Love Joy’s suggestion of jean jacket in cooler weather!
