KEEP OR RETURN: Tight H&M cheeky floral dress

I think I saw this dress on someone else on the YLF forum (can't recall who) and remember liking it a lot, but somehow nobody else did! Then I saw it in the store, and thought why not. Among all the dresses I've bought this week, this is the only one I haven't returned (yet). The others didn't fit properly, but this one does. What bothers me is WHERE, WHEN and HOW to wear it.

I'm not used to bodycons nor sexy patterns. I am a ditsy floral fit and flared dresses girl. I live in wonderland and see rabbits in waistcoats very often. Jk, but it's true that I'm not the alluring sexy femme fatale type of girl. However, I somehow feel like moving towards a new fashion persona (one of the dresses I finally returned due to poor fit was a fit and flared zebra patterned dress, where litteral zebras were scattered, very fun and so not me).

So... what would you do? Do you think it is too much? At least it's not an expensive dress...

PS: Forgive unwashed hair, I'm heading towards the shower right now!
PS1: Also, off with their heads to whomever dares say I have no curves, no hips or no butt! (believe it or not, been told that too many times for my liking!!!)

It looks good on you. I would wear it with sandals and a denim jacket about town. As long as you can sit and walk comfortably, it sounds like it is something different for you and something fun to play with.

It's pretty and Scarlet's suggestions are good. It does look a tad snug from the side view, but if you can move and breathe and step out of your normal style for this it's very pretty.

I vote return. The dress is too short and a big snug for my taste but that is not really the main reason. I think there are some pattern placement issues with those pairs of blue flowers highlighting the bossom area and below the midsection. That is a deal breaker for me, I'm sorry.

Girls, the dress is comfy and does not feel too tight at all. I can move freely and with no problems. It is in fact a bit too wide at the waist, but that happens a lot with dresses to me because of the hourglassy 'disproportion'. I like Scarlet's suggestions, I'm not sure it will be cool enough to sport a denim jacket at all times though!

Zapotee, you think it's too short? Wow, most of my dresses are shorter than that, and flared -which give me Marilyn Monroe moments all the time. Beware I'm in my early twenties and look like a late teen, I wouldn't like to look too lady-like or modest, as if wearing a costume. I agree with you on the pattern placement, but I think it is purposefully like that, which is what I'm trying to see if I will dare to wear it or not. It IS a bit... spicy, and I would like it on other women. I have to see if I would like it on me.

I think it looks good on you! If it's comfortable I would say keep, since I get the feeling that you really like it and it wasn't expensive. I like Scarlet's idea of a denim jacket and sandals. How about a denim waistcoat or vest when it's too hot for a jacket? I just bought a denim vest and I really like it.

The dress is a sheath, rather than a bandage or bodycon dress. The later tend to stay in place. This one is more like a cotton, polyester and spandex blend, right? In my opinion, this type of dress needs either the length or to be looser, not for modesty, but to stay put and not ride up to the point of insanity.

Ok, so let me ask you, what happens when you lift your arms or walk? Does the dress ride up? If not, then you are ok. If it does ride up, I would consider returning, there is nothing more unflattering than watching a girl pull her skirt down every 5 steps, that's what I tell my teenage daughter.

I'm still not liking the pattern placement. Unnecessary advertisement:)

I think it's very pretty on you. I like the contrast of the plain and tighter cut with the floral pattern.

I have a similar shape and have a few of the H and M sheath dresses. If this one isn't quite hitting it, you could try some of the other colors and styles. But I think in general a sheath dress works for you!

I think the cut and fit are nice on you -- I really don't see it being tight anywhere. I do see the pattern placement issue Zap mentions, but if that doesn't bother you, then go for it! I'm much more aware of these things on myself, but I'm large-busted and wide-hipped (and a couple of decades older than you!) so I think it is more of an issue on me.

This looks great on your body -- I think you can definitely do slim-fitting sheaths.

I do vote return, though, because of the pattern placement.

I think it is pretty on you. I see the pattern placement issue that Zap mentions and I might look for another one just in case the pattern is a bit different (i.e try to find same dress but with different pattern placement - sometimes this will vary dress to dress.)

Also agree with Zapotee that you should try to sit, cross legs, raise your arms, and decide if you feel comfortable at this length.

You have a great shape for sheaths!

Ok girls, I think I'll just return it and see if I can find something better for me I wasn't sure to begin with so if you say it has to go, it is going to (though mom likes it, surprisingly). Also, the dress is such a statement piece that I'd probably get bored of it in no time... I better spend those 20€ on something else!

Oh no, now I feel bad, maybe I came off too strong.
Just to clarify, I don't think the dress is too tight overall, what I think is that it is too tight for the length and the fabric choice. Had the dress been longer, the fit would not bother me at all.
The other ladies seem to like the length and fit, I really think you should not consider my opinion on those aspects then. That leaves us with the pattern placement issue only.
I think Suz's idea is great. Perhaps there is another one with a different pattern placement. Your mom likes it too...

I love the dress! You are very young, and can wear it this short and snug. I vote keep.

However, if you think you will tire of it - return it.

I don't think Zapotee was wrong. I feel she was right on target. I will definitely weigh her advice heavily in the future.

I vote keep! It's a fun dress that is so flattering on you. I actually didn't notice the pattern placement until others pointed it out, but I don't think it's a big deal. You're young so have some fun with this dress and enjoy!

Lemonade: What I like about this dress is that it is a new silhouette for you, but it still has a little bit of that Alice in Wonderland effect in the print --- a sweet floral. The floral takes away a bit of the sexy-wexy effect of a body con dress, and makes it read more young and ladylike. The neckline is also rather demure. If I saw you in this dress, I wouldn't bat an eyelid, and remember one of my IRL personas is pastor's wife. As long as you don't have to tug on it and can sit, etc., I say keep and give it a go! One of the things I like about H&M, is the fact that they are fashion forward, but very affordable. This has allowed me to test drive a couple of different looks without breaking the bank. One of my choices was a big success, the other didn't work in the long term, but turned out to be a great gift to someone else. In your twenties, you should be even freer to try new things!

It may even be a little tighter on Nicole - and the pattern placement is just the same. It's a subjective opinion of course, but I think you gals both have the youth and bods to carry off this look. And I am very strict about "short, tight and skimpy items" in general (it's probably my least favourite fashionable look - think short bandage frocks). The pattern placement is beautiful to my eye.

Zap has a good point about short tight dresses like this creeping up when you walk fast, sit down or reach up with your arms. That either bothers you or it doesn't. A personal choice

Oooooh, so THAT's where I saw the dress!!!!!! Ok, so I was actually wrong regarding people not liking it. I do remember someone wearing a beautiful dress only aproved though!

I love it on Nicole Maybe I'll keep it, after all. I'll sleep on it. Promise!

I had to chime back in again and say I hope you keep it. You have to be comfortable in it though! I think it's very flattering and totally age appropriate. If I had the youth and body, I'd wear it, so I can live vicariously through you!

I also saw the pattern placement issues, even before reading Zap's comment... for some reason, on Nicole's body shape it doesn't seem as pronounced to me, but maybe most people would not notice something like this.

It's funny how some of you commented on Nicole's blog saying you loved the dress and that you guys find the pattern too provocative on my body. Maybe rae is right in that it depends on the shape of the body, although I have to admit I can't see much of a difference between both 'models'. It's true that I am... well, more endowed, but I don't find myself especially busty in this dress (which coming from me is a huge Hallellujah).

I can recall really liking it when I saw it on Nicole for the first time and thinking 'where did she get that?'. I found the pattern fun and a bit provocative, but in a good 'Nicole can pull that off way'. I always get the impression that she buys at the most special and strange shops, so it really surprised me when I found it in a random H&M. Very unexpected.

I don't think difference in how people percieve the pattern in the dress is because of your bodies.....I think the difference is in your pictures....you can't see your face in your pictures, while Niocle's pics are full body---without a face to look at , the pic puts the pattern placement front and center.

After seeing Nicole's pic, I think the pattern is much less obvious.....

Interesting lesson in pictures!
