keep or return: printed blouse

I got this blouse from DR2 for CAN 34$ (including taxes) 100% polyester at Marshalls because I often crave a printed tunic-like shirt when my closet holds very few. Bonus: this one has a navy background, whereas the one or two other ones are black.
So the price, the color, and the shape were yesses, so it came home with me.
Except now I'm not sure! I'm tempted to return it.
Something tells me I won't wear it too much... but I can't pinpoint what.

FWIW, I really like looks 1 and 3; they both create flattering proportions. But, perhaps something is off for your eye, in terms of how much waist definition you want?

It sounds like this piece ticks a lot of boxes, but the print does not wow me. Maybe this floral isn't quite you? I do really like the look of it belted in #3.

Also, it might help to decide whether this would be a statement, essential, or completer in your wardrobe. My hunch is that it's a completer -- something to wear over skinnies?

It looks very nice on you.Is it the dark colour ,the pattern or the fact it’s polyester putting you off?As I have said it suits you but obviously your gut is telling you something,the trick is to work out what and see if you can live with it.

La ped, your questions provide guidance. I didin't think of this piece as central or completer. I thought in terms of tops and bottoms lol! But your hunch is correct, I am more looking for something to wear with navy bottoms rather then something that would play central role. Also, the print might be a bit too big for me.

Thank you Texstyle. This helps. The shirt itself is not large, but I think the effect is amplified by the large print.

Your can certainly wear it, but if it does not have the happiness factor, maybe it should go back. The print is maybe not badass. Does it fit with your style objectives?

I like it, but maybe the floral is too large scale? There are enough navy and floral options out there, you’ll find one you like.

Thank you Joy and Columbine. It's true, the print is not badass. The cut is, however, and you can see it when it's belted, but really, I think that's it: the print. Into the return bag it goes.

I like it best belted and tucked. It feels a little too short to me as a tunic. The neckline is not ‘badass’ to me... too wide or something...

I think rachylou hit the "big" part for me, the neckline looks big and the floral as you said is maybe not right.

If you have to ask, then it is most likely no. In my experience, every time I was not sure and had to ask, it was a mistake to keep it in the end.

Two possible reasons why you have a feeling that you won't wear it much:
● Polyester may not be very comfortable.
● You probably would look and feel better in other necklines than a sharp deep V.

The Cat, yes, exactly. The 2 reasons right there. Now I know to pay attention to these details when I shop in the future. I should straight off the bat refuse to even try on a blouse that would be 100% polyester, because I know I will just freeze in it.

Maybe you're sorted. But just in case...

I like the belted rendition, but the untucked version seems kind of pedestrian to my eye. The tucked one is middle-of-the-road.

I would keep either this printed blouse or the printed skirt. I think that having two large floral prints in your wardrobe might be overkill?

Gigi, you are so right. I had to look up the adjective pedestrian and found it means commonplace. Maybe it's the rubber booties I'm wearing it with - I try to purposely dress it down.
But... not 100% happy so back it goes. Thank you for sharing your view!

I think it’s not quite right but you can think about the issues that seemed good and keep an eye out for something better.
The colors and contrast are very good with your coloring. Not just graphic black & white but with those mid tones. So something with that dark floral or print but maybe smaller ( but not ditzy)maybe a fabric that feels more luxurious, some edgy details.

Unfrumped, yes, right on: I need such a shirt in a better fabric. If this shirt had been made in something just a bit more comforatble than 100% polyester, I would probbly have kept it. Problem is that usually these are more expensive, therefore they don't even land in stores where I go for "just a top". So now I'll keep my eye open for tops in more luxurious places, where I go for bottoms (because I'm so hard to fit).

Krish I didn't feel it was quite you but did like it belted. BTW I love your new hair ( may have said before) so you need to change your profile pic which has the old hair. I recently changed mine as I no longer fit the maxi dress I was wearing in it But gave it to 27 y old DD1 who looks amazing in it. She is WAY slimmer than me but it has an elasticated shirred bodice which shrank down nicely to fit her

Jenni, too bad for the dress, but good thing for your DD1 who will love it for sure! My goal is to get my hair long like in the pic again as fast as it will grow. I like it now, but I feel better with it a bit longer. However, you are correct, I should update my picture Good for you to have updated yours!

Krish, my eye also went to the neckline. I could be importing my own issues on to you (though you have said in the past that our body types are similar) but I find those necklines not great on me - I just don't fill them out enough with my small bust. I want smaller necklines and lapels or collars.

Anne, what you say is so true and it' a detail I don't think about usually. I need to pay more attention to it indeed. I have an average size bust, but still, it looks like the blouse is drooping on my chest. Can't tell if it's the size of the v, it's aperture, it's depth... but I definitively see it.
