Keep or Return: Lucky Kennedy and Free People Sargeant's Jackets

I ordered the Lucky Brand Kennedy plaid jacket and Free People Sargeant's Short Jacket from Angie's list of jacket picks. I struggle with the fit of jackets and coats, so I *need* complete YLF approval before committing to anything! (Thanks in advance for your feedback!)

The Lucky jacket: Love, love, love the plaid! (Must be the Scot in me!) Of course the sleeves are a mile too long and would have to be shortened drastically, but on the bright side, the shoulders are roomy. Yay! (MPJ: Did you get that? Also, I'd say this jacket runs pretty true to size, but keep in mind I don't do a whole lot of jacket shopping.) My biggest concern is the collar: Is it too much for my short neck? Does it conflict with the length of my hair? Does it make me look like a linebacker? My second concern is the fuller silhouette. Does it work on a short, sturdy figure?

The Free People jacket: Love the color. Don't love the fabrication. While it's soft, stretchy, and ultra-comfy, it looks like it would appear perpetually rumpled. And the asymmetrical styling doesn't seem to do my bustless figure any favors. With the sleeves hanging off the ends of my fingertips, it's hard to tell much about proportions, but it just doesn't look good to me.

Over to you. Is the Lucky jacket a keeper, or should I keep looking?

I like you in that asymmetrical jacket actually :). But the fabric is an acquired taste for sure. You will either love it or loathe it.

Whoa! That's a great plaid jacket! I love it and it sounds like you do too! Not so keen on the red--it looks so plain in comparison. I vote to keep the plaid, return the plain!

I love the red jacket - love that color and I think it looks great on you. Note I am a bit biased towards red jackets though :-).

An, I'm biased toward red *anything*! I just can't get past the rumpled-looking fabric, though. I don't think I'd ever feel confident and put-together in it.

Becky, I prefer the red asymmetrical jacket. I'm not really a fan of plaid, but with shortened sleeves, that jacket would definitely work for you.

Jonesy, the red jacket is 90% wool/10% linen. I'm *very* picky about wool, but this is quite soft and not scratchy at all. The plaid jacket is 50% wool/50% polyester. It's not as soft as the other jacket, but since the collar doesn't touch my neck, I'm good to go!

Hmm. Lynne is on Team Red too. Lots of praise for the red one. Very surprising.

Love that Lucky jacket with your jeans! It looks fine on you except for the sleeve length. I want one too.

Barbara, thanks for chiming in. I am truly shocked at how many of you love the red jacket. I really almost didn't post pics of it.

Thanks, Joy. The swingy silhouette is a departure from my usual. I'd really prefer a more fitted silhouette. I feel like it makes me look wide.

Would love to see these with the sleeves hitched up or tucked under. It's kind of eerie looking at the pics of you with no hands : )

Well, you do NOT look like a linebacker! The sleeves are miles too long, but aside from that they both look great on you, my favorite as far as style is the solid red. I have the opposite problem, sleeves are always too short, so at least you can have them shortened!

Yes, Carole, I can always console myself that hems can be shortened much more easily than they can be lengthened.

OK, question for all of you who prefer the red jacket: What makes you prefer it?

Is it:
A. the color
B. preference for solids over patterns OR dislike of plaid
C. the asymmetrical styling
D. the silhouette
E. I don't know, I just like it better

I like the asymmetry of the red jacket and the fit. I like plaid, but this is a large plaid and I see PLAID JACKET rather than a good looking woman. It could too easily be a case of the clothes wearing you, rather than the other way around.

I prefer the red because of the cut (love the asymmetrical nature) and it seems to fit better (closer to the body, less boxy) than the plaid.

But if you can't get over the fabric and it will make you feel rumpled each time you wear it, I'd suggesting moving on.

I think you look better in the red one. The fit seems perfect (x sleeves) and seams hit all the right places (in my opinion), the neckline looks really good and elegant, and it just makes your face glow! Not sure why, maybe because it matches your glass frames, or because it is "your" color?
But I also think the Lucky jacket is fun. Even though it doesn't flatter your silhouette as well as the Free People one, it can be a fun change when you're in mood for something that makes you feel fuzzy inside Personally though, I wouldn't make it a full-time jacket.
