Keep or Return? High waisted skirt

I would appreciate your opinion regarding this high waisted skirt. I like it when I see it in the mirror, but less so when I see the photos! So I thought this was a good one to get YLF feedback on.

Pros - good fit on my waist and through the body
- light coloured, was wanting to add some white into my wardrobe for this summer
- different to anything else I have and I would be able to wear it to work, so it will get worn
- it is cotton, so in the heat of summer, it will be nice and cool to wear.

Cons - it is cotton, so creases, as shown in photos (I did not iron it before the try on session)
- unflattering?? - the pockets on the hips and horizontal stripes may not be doing me any favours.

I have tried it with two cropped jackets - a white cropped jacket and a black one, which is likely what I would pair it with for work.

Please be honest, if you don't like it, it can be returned. I also posted a picture of a dress that I wore with my white jacket as a reference point. Maybe I should be sticking to dark colours on my lower half.

All feedback is much appreciated, it is so nice to have the YLF community to ask for help.

I like it best when you've worn it with the white top that makes it look more like a sheath. Perhaps that's defeating the whole purpose of the skirt, though. Can you show it with a colored top and no jacket?

The white does show your curves more than the black, for example, but not in an unflattering way.

I love the idea for you, and I like a lot of things about this, but I don’t love the way the fabric is pooching out at the abdomen. Is it ruched?? The stock photo doesn’t seem to indicate that. I think you can absolutely wear a white high-waisted skirt, but that detail (is it a bug or a feature? LOL) bothers me.

You do have a great and slim figure I just don't think the 100% cotton will make you that many favors in that it will look creased in no time, and so why bothering, when we have all that elastane and lycra handy nowadays! I definetely think if I can(and love) then everybody can wear white bottoms,too-but fabric and cut matters a lot! This has probably dues to a too high of a waist (reaches you almost under the bust?) and/or it is streamlined too early down on the sides-so it may creap up on your torso a bit more, if that makes sense. It is less the pockets or the stripes, BUT IT IS mostly about the creasy stiff fabric, I guess.

Ok, I had the exact same thought as Janet - is the fabric ruched or puckered? If it's puckered, I don't think this is the right skirt for you. I think it generally looks good and I like the white, so no worries about your ability to wear this style.

What a cool skirt! I also had the same thought as Janet, is it rouched on the side? Or is it just too big on you? And I'm not sure the pockets look great with a jacket covering them. Maybe this style should just be worn with a blouse and no jacket? But, I think you can totally wear this stye and lighter color on the bottom.

Thanks so much for the feedback. The skirt is not rouched - so that is just my hips getting in the way and not fitting me right. I could possibly wear shape-wear, but that is not ideal, especially as I wanted to wear this skirt when the weather is hot.

I wanted this skirt to work, so it is great to get confirmation that it just does not. I don't like clothing that creases and this skirt would become far more creased over a day at work which I know would drives me bananas!

This is definitely a return.

It might lie flat if you size up, what do you think?
I love the shape of this. The length and fit through the leg and torso is very flattering.

You don’t need to wear dark in the bottom. The white is gorgeous on you. The look is slimming and sleek.

The side pockets and horizontal lines are very nice. I think the pockets are are actually flattering because of their placement. I don’t really notice the creasing.

Bijou, I agree you should try the size up or look for another white bottom.

That said, I think this shows enough as a proof of concept that you CAN work a white bottom. The size and fit and fabric need to be perfect, though; white bottoms have a higher degree of difficulty. The problem is with this particular skirt or the size you're wearing of it, not your shape!

Just want to chime in that you can absolutely carry off this style, even if this skirt isn't 'the one'. Also, it's not you, it's the garment! The high waisted pencil is a tricky cut for cotton. There needs to be a little synthetic for ease, especially when moving. Next!

This shows what I love and find frustrating with high waisted skirts - I had one and they are hard to get a perfect fit on. I remember Jane on the forum showing one a while back and loving it - the shape and general style suits you brilliantly but the fit needs to work in the hips and waist and I do think an element of stretch helps with that. I have seen a scattering of them around.

Thanks for the help, and comments, they are so appreciated. I don't think I will size up because then the waist will be too big, this one fits perfectly. But I will look for another white skirt or dress, because I do like the column of white effect.

Just chiming in to echo everything that's been said: not a fan of the extra material poofing out at the hip, overall shape is really nice, the horiz. stripes are not a problem, looks best with a white top. I'd keep looking at this silhouette until you find one that is a proper fit.

Yes, you should have a skirt that lays properly.

I returned the skirt and feel much happier to not have it making me feel bad about the poor fit. Thanks for the comments, it did help me to resolve to take it back.

I can be silly about fit and talk myself into keeping things that are a bit too tight on the basis that I will lose weight and then it will fit perfectly. It has been extremely helpful to have the forums support in why I should not keep this.
