Keep or return: Black trench

I ordered this London Fog on sale from the Rack, but I'm not feeling like it's doing me any favors, either in color or fit. What say you?

I like it, and I think it is very flattering, but I think it's the hood that's throwing me off. When a trench does not have a hood it seems kind of pointless, since you're still going to need a hat or umbrella. But when it does have a hood, you don't get the same cool detective-on-a-secret-mission collar effect. How does it feel?

Have I ever seen you in black?

I think it's gorgeous! I love the fabric and the buttons, and the style. I myself have a hard time wearing a large expanse of black but with your blonde hair I think it looks good. It will be more at home over a dress too. I love the length, it looks like a very well made coat. Classy, like you.

Does it look too big in the shoulders?

I generally don't wear a lot of black because I think it looks kind of harsh on me. What do you think?

Okay - removable hood = best possible compromise! I love it without the hood! And useful with it, too. I am not sure about the black on you. It's dramatic but I like that look. Maybe the blonde gals here will chime in.

MaryK - do you have any trench coats at all? I LOVE a great fitting black trench - and this looks very nice on you - but, I'm wondering if you would look better (and find more useful) a colorful trench? Remember Angie's pic from Fashion Week of her wearing the yellow trench? It was gorgeous and I think of you wearing something like that more than I do a black colored trench. I have a black trench and I have a bright berry colored trench - and I love them both, but I wear the berry colored one a LOT more than I do the black. (Just something to think about.)

I agree with Lynne and Marley. I think I would prefer you in color, and if you have your heart set on black, I think you can do better. (There's something about the sheen of this fabric that I'm not nuts about--it's not shiny enough to be satin but not matte.)

Turns out it doesn't make me happy. The black just kind of brings me down.

I do need a good trench coat, though, because we have more rain coming this year. So I ordered this one in brown: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ga.....tback=1046 and this one in green and in red: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ga.....tback=1046. Hopefully one of them will be "The One."

It looks a whole lot like the trench I just bought for myself, so maybe that's why I like it! It doesn't look big to me. Do you like the black? I personally prefer it to the standard icky beige most trenches are.

Its funny...I'm so used to seeing you in colour that when I see you in black, it seems strange. but black does actually suit you and goes with your blonde hair I think. But you should go with what you feel good in. Like others here I am envious of how you manage to wear different colours and combinations.

I like it from the back MaryK but from the front, the top buttons tend to draw too much focus on your shoulders and bustline so I vote return, or remove those shoulder-ish top buttons.

I liked it better without the hood, but I think it's not quite fitted enough for you. And I am 100% happy to hear that you're going to try for one in color! Marley, your berry trench sounds awesome!

MaryK, I am glad you are trying something else. It just doesn't seem you.

It is funny, I spent 15 years living in black but the only black trench I have ever owned ( and still do ) is one with luggage leather piping. Get yourself one first that will work well in very wet weather. Then get yourself a couple of fun ones. ( I have a fun one that is Fuschia with little white polka dots ).

I agree with others, after seeing you in so many wonderful colors, a black trench does not do you justice.

Okay, check this out: My BFF Amanda (whom some of you met at the swap) came over for her birthday dinner a little while ago, saw the trench on the table, loved it, tried it on, and it looks FAB FAB FAB on her! So I gave it to her for her birthday and everybody is happy, happy, happy!!

Oh MaryK, what a perfect happy ending for the black trench :). I agree that it just wasn't you...I imagine you in a cornflower blue trench--wouldn't that be smashing with your hair and coloring?

Happy resolution! I think this coat fits you very well but I agree that maybe black is not right for you. I always think blondes can look so great in beige/camel, even though it is not a YLF-popular color. I hope one of the other ones works out for you.
