Keep or exchange? Boot dilemma

Right, so I was in desperate need of some nice, sturdy dress-up-or-down boots with autumn around the corner, so I took to the shops today and was torn between these two pairs (both by the same brand, funnily enough). My mom and the friend I most often turn to for advice on style dilemmas both said they unequivocally preferred the black ones, so I ended up taking those home with me, but I've been second-guessing my choice ever since. . .possibly just because I'm super hormonal and that tends to make me indecisive, but humour me here, guys (gals): which one do you prefer?

For context:
i. My winter coat is a warm shade of grey shearling.
ii. I usually wear black hats.
ii. Style keywords at the moment: a touch of Americana (distressed denim, flannel shirts, Johnny Cash tee under a blazer), "deranged mime"/"escaped from the circus" (stripes, drop-crotch/harem trousers, blouses with trumpet sleeves, deconstructed items), Eighties rapper (studs and spikes, drop-crotch trousers, boxy boyish tees with silkscreen prints), and a touch of grunge/utility with big army jumpers and shearling lined corduroy jackets.

What's the verdict, YLF?

I am also leaning toward the black ones. Honestly, I really like them both, but the deranged mime/80s rapper/grunge triad makes me feel like you need as much versatility as possible in these boots, and the black seem like they can swing more ways. Cannot wait to see your outfit pics.

PS Just wanted to add that I hate doubting a purchase I have made!!! So nice to have this forum for a double check.

Based on your style descriptors, I would guess you'd prefer the ones that are less mainstream (not black)? But you probably want to let the hormones settle down before making a decision.

Are these your only pair of boots? In which case versatility is important. The second pair would not work with your Americana persona, (in my opinion, obviously) whereas with proper styling, your black ones will work with everyone.

Based on your style descriptors, I think you'll get more wear out of the black. But it sounds as if you also have a yen for boots of another colour.

So you could always get another pair.

If you don't wear a hat all the time, you might like a boot that bookends your hair.

Hi Edie! I hope you post more often because your style descriptors are so cool! Your inner deranged mime can't be counted on times like these to be your inner voice. :). I prefer the black ones but one of my descriptors is All American Gothic so I have a preference for black. Johnny Cash would also pick the black ones. Haha.

Just to say, you guys were so right! After some hemming and hawing, I decided to stick with the black ones because they were more versatile. And luck would have it that at the hair show I did last week (I moonlight as a hair model occasionally) the colourist decided to dye my hair black (and violet + blue, theme: a crow), making these boots the perfect bookend for my new look. Hurray! Will try to get someone to snap some outfit photos soon (I can't do the whole selfie thing).

I would go with the black ones. But did you say what your main wardrobe colors are? Your style descriptors are awesome and very evocative. I can see a sort of Neil Gaiman demented Victorian circus orphan tomboy look...

alaskagirl, evoking Neil Gaiman = high praise and mission accomplished, as far as I'm concerned! My wardrobe is mainly based around neutrals (blacks, silvers and dark greys, cream) with forays into jewel tones (oxblood, teal, aquamarine) and pattern (tweed, herringbone, pinstripe) to spice things up.

I've recently started incorporating some earth colours (brown, sand, olive) into my wardrobe as well, in keeping with what seems to be in stores this season. I'd definitely like to add some lighter-coloured boots to the mix as well at some point.
