K/E everlane square silk dress

I had been salivating over this dress since the day it came out. A combined moment of weakness and a husband's blessing to spend before our budget goes into effect, made me pull the trigger.

I love the color and shape. I do wonder if I should size down, as it is very generous.

It's not really styled here, just thrown over the jeans I was wearing today, although over jeans is one of the ways I'd invisioned wearing this dress.

Keep? Or Exchange?

I can post pantsless pics this evening if that is necessary for a full review.

This dress is totally you.

If you are able to try the size down for comparison, that would make sense. I like the oversized fit in the body but it feels as if the sleeve length is a bit off at this size.

As I was looking for the return policy, I noticed that the cotton square shirtdress I have from Everlane is actually a size down from this one.

I'll have to return for store credit and rebuy, so it's not exactly easy to compare the two. There's LOTS of room in the body though. I think the size down will still be roomy.

The only other thing is, and this is a risky proposition, I recently read that silk is only dry clean only because most silk isn't preshrunk before the garment is made, so if you hand or machine wash you will have shrinkage. I hand washed my Everlane silk square shirt and I do think it shrank a bit, 10% maybe?, but it is still fine because it was quite over sized before (it's the size I'm showing in this dress.) Too risky?

Before I return it, I'm going to try turning back the sleeves one turn to see if they'll stay there.

Hmm. Can you call Everlane and talk to them? I always wash silk by hand or in machine and then air dry and iron. I think I may have had a tiny bit of shrinkage in a shirt I got from Ann Taylor a few years back. But no shrinkage in my other silks. So...

It looks as if this would still have room in any case, but it's awful to have to take the chance.

I'm no help on sizing with these oversized un-tailored dresses, but I will chime in to say I find Everlane's return policy REALLY annoying on this front. I'm almost always between sizes, and I think it's ridiculous that I have to incur a shipping penalty if I order both sizes and return one, but not if I'm willing to order one size at a time. I'm pretty sure they'd save money on shipping by sending me both at the same time... and I can guarantee you I'd buy more from them, especially since so many of the products are eternally waitlisted/backordered.

Traci, I was just looking at this dress in navy. I love the green on you. I am concerned about the dry cleaning though. Was unsure of the sizing--perhaps I'll go with the smaller of the two sizes I was considering.

Working on an exchange now. There's a glitch in their system, so I had to email support:(

LaPed, on that front, they do offer free shipping on orders of 2 items or more, I ended up throwing in a cheap cotton tshirt for yoga just to not technically pay shipping. With returns for credit, they give you free shipping on the next order. Depending on how often you'd order from them, you could come out even with trying both sizes and returning for credit, if you'd use the credit in a reasonable amount of time to not feel like they were holding your money hostage.

Are you thinking if the larger one shrinks it will end up being the right size? What if it doesn't shrink? Would you be okay with it? I think talking to them is a good idea.

I am also salivating over this dress. I can't assess the fit on you but I hope this or one of the other sizes is a winner.

I have two identical Everlane sleeveless silk shirts, about the same weight as the square silk shirt. I wash one and keep the other dry clean only. The one I wash is noticeably smaller now, I'd say a full size.

Edited to add - for me, the square silk shirt is constrained by my upper arm size. I had to size up for it to lie properly on my arms -- which is odd for something that looks so roomy in the sleeves and shoulders. I don't know if that'll be an issue for you but it was a little frustrating.
