K/D? Do these jackets fit?

I am going through my stash of blazers and jackets and wondered if you could help me decide which, if any, no longer fit and should be passed on? I have a difficult time spotting poor shoulder and sleeve fit and sleeve length.

Please forgive my lack of otherwise styling any outfits. These aren’t the usual tops I would wear under the jackets, but I did make sure to add thicker shirts where I would normally wear them, except under the boyfriend blazer. I haven’t figured out how to wear it.

#1: ancient Jcrew stadium cloth peacoat
#2: Bernardo cognac leather moto
#3: Zara green vegan moto
#4: ancient Jcrew Bella velvet blazer
#5: Theory Navy blazer
#6: grey “boyfriend” blazer-I was going for a trendy boxy 80s vibe, but I think I flopped
#7: ancient denim jacket-I get that this one is supposed to be cropped, but is it too small??
#8: ancient Marvyn Paris leather trench-This one feels snug on the hip and wide in the shoulder. Maybe it’s stretched out??

6 and 8 look too big around the shoulders to me. 7 looks fine. 1 looks fine (it’s really nice too!). It may be a little roomy in the shoulders - I’d wear it open and layered. Not sure about 2. Something looks off in the chest/shoulder area. 3 looks good to me. 4 looks a little long in the sleeve. You might want to update it with a jacket that has a lower button stance, especially with all the velvet around now. Not sure about 5. The shoulders look a little wide. Angie will know.

The only ones that look way off to me are 6 and 8. The others look, at the very least, close enough if they serve a purpose in your wardrobe. (Does that make sense?)

I think the denim one might be a little short in a fall pants outfit but would still work as a summer topper over skirts and dresses, especially if you roll the sleeves because then they won’t look as long relative to the body and are more breezy/summery- I like the ‘j crew sleeve roll’, you can google it

I think 1 is the best fit. Nice length, nice sleeve length. I *am* wondering where your shoulders are in all of these... do the shoulder seams linenup with your shoulders?

1 and 3 are my favourite and I think the fit is spot on. I love these both on you - fit and shape.
7 to me is a jacket to wear in summer with a dress - I think it fits well - a modern classic. It does work with the jeans too but I think I would prefer it with a dress or skirt.

I do think 8 is too big and probably 6 although I like the oversized boxy blazer look.

SarahD8- that makes sense! I am fine with “close enough”. I figure there’s no reason to try to make outfits out of ones that don’t even fit.

Rachylou- this is my struggle: what part of my shoulder is supposed to line up with the seam? Directly above my armpit? Closer to the curve? I’ve slways thought shoulder was a bigger area vs. a specific point (also explains why I dropped nursing school; anatomy is HARD!)

Sal- thank you! 1 and 3 are two of my favorites to wear (along with 5); I’m happy to hear they look ok. I’ll put 7 back in the box until spring!

#1 is on trend color wise, #2 looks a bit dated to me but not terribly and it's a nice color, love #3!, #4 looks dated but who knows maybe is going to come back next season, or might look sweet (too sweet?) with a flowy midi length skirt, #5 is awesome classic, so is #6 and on trend now, #7 looks classic I would hold on to it, #8 I'd lay to rest, RIP.

Didn't read the other comments before I replied. I'm going to disagree about #6. This is the shape right now! Boxy oversized, a throwback to the 80s. It's perfectly on trend.

Nodding with Brooklyn. I love #1 and #3 on you -- great fit. 2 looks a bit loose in the bust/ torso. #4 is long in the sleeve and the style feels dated. 5 is okay...but something in me wonders...have you tried it open? If you would mostly wear it open, it would be great to see it that way.

I'm of two minds on #6. It definitely looks 80s to me. Boxy, BF. But something still feels off -- maybe the shoulder line is just a little bit wide or off. (Like my new consignment jacket, LOL. Bear in mind I am usually a stickler for shoulder fit. Despite my own shopping mistakes!)

Roll/ scrunch the sleeves on the denim jacket and try it with summer skirts/ dresses. I have one that is cropped and the sleeves are too long but I never wear them down -- this helps it feel natural and good to me.

Leather coat looks too big in shoulders.

I would donate 8, maybe 4 unless you really love it. 6 looks like Greyscale's style. You have such variety here that I vote that you keep anything you like and wear.

Ha ha ha ha, I was just skimming through all the comments and I was about to add a dissenting positive vote on 6 and then I saw Joy's comment. She's so right! You have a taller and more angular frame than me, I think, so you can pull off the oversized 80s blazer look quite well. But if it's not your look, no need to force it.

I agree with everyone that almost all of these fit you quite well, so it's more a question of style than fit. I am guessing that you got a little smaller since buying some of these?

#1 is amazing. Very current yet retro. The jean jacket is also perfect.

2 and 8, and maybe 4, look dated to me (4 is just so different from my own style that it's hard to evaluate, and the sleeves are cut wider than they need to be). 8 also just looks too big.

The Theory blazer might be a touch too big in the shoulders. But it's such a classic, and it really looks quite good, so I'd be tempted to hold onto it.

I also struggle with where the shoulder should sit. I prefer boxy cuts with sharp shoulders (almost masculine fits) and I have wide shoulders for my overall small frame. If I put the shoulder seam closer in to my neck, I feel too round-shouldered. Almost all of my questions on YLF come down to me worrying that my natural impulse to size up is wrong.

I really like the green vegan moto jacket. It looks really nice on you.

#6 doesn’t look like a flop to me. I can see it with worn a sparkly tube top or low cut tank top, and heels and a clutch. Or as you have styled it in the pic, with a cosy scarf and flat loafers for an artistic look.

Everything fits ok to me, apart from the green velvet. The torso of the jacket is short, and snug at the top button area, which feels a tiny bit unbalanced with the long, wide sleeves.

Hi Nemosmom, I have a procedural, out-of-interest question. When you call these "ancient", do you have an approx number of years that "ancient" means? I like to keep many of my clothes at least 5 years. Angie keeps many of hers for only about 3 years, as she told me in a thread. I guess I'd only call my clothes ancient after 20 years, making them actual vintage.
The only one of these I don't like is 4. The sleeves are too long, that may be an easy fix, but I guess it does look somewhat dated to me, cannot explain why as not clever enough with fashion trends to know. I usually rely on the forum to tell me why something is dated, which is how I managed to get rid of the 1996 booties and the 2008 shooties in 2017/18. They still fitted and were in good nick, I was just kind of over them I eventually decided.

Love -#1, 5 &7. Fit and sizing imo look great
#2 I’m confused about- it has belt loops but I don’t see the belt...do you wear it belted? If you don’t, then to me it feels dated. If you do, then I’d like to see it belted to get better idea of fit
#3 &4 fit well. #3 doesn’t seem dated, but imo #4 does.
#6.... I get what you are going for. But I don’t think this is working. To me, it looks like the blazer is wearing you instead of you wearing the blazer. Can you try a size down?
As an aside- during my October closet edit I found blazers/jackets much harder to edit than I thought it was going to be. Fine line between what fits and what doesn’t. And equally fine line between cuyabs dated—at least for me.

I would keep 1, 3, 7. #1 is my very favorite of the bunch, amazing colour and nice fit. #3 is a great fitting moto and the colour is lovely. And #7 will make a great summer jacket over dresses/skirts/culottes. You could roll the sleeves if they feel too long, or hack them and leave a raw edge.

#2 and #4 are neither here nor there; they fit but aren't wow. 5, 6, 8 all look off to me, too big on the shoulders, but maybe not relaxed enough through the body to give a real oversized vibe. The boyfriend blazer is so widely available it might be worth keeping an eye out for one with a better fit.

JenniNZ: great question! The green velvet blazer (#4) is from 2007 JCrew. The yellow JCrew peacoat (#1) I *think* is 2010. The leather Marvyn trench (#8) was a hand-me-down from a roommate in 2005; I'm not sure how long she had it before that. The mfg tag is gone and lining has been repaired a few times. The leather is soft and thin, like a lambskin almost, and feels like butter, which is why I've had a hard time parting with it. The denim jacket (also JCrew) is 2013.

Suz: I do usually wear the navy blazer open; I will try that. I am also torn about #6... something is off....

Greyscale: thanks! My body shape has changed since I bought them (bigger in some places, smaller in others..) Determining the fit will help me pick the ones to pass on. I'd hate to keep one I LOVE if it looks horribly off. If they fit, then it's just a matter of letting go of what doesn't suit me. I missed the BF blazer trend in the 80s and this one felt fun to me. It's a nice change from the tapered waist I typically reach for and could help create some new silhouettes with my slim pants. Or, it could go horribly into David Byrne territory...

kkards: thank you! #2 does have a belt, but it doesn't sit right; it's on my ribcage instead of my waist which creates an odd look (and feels weird, too). I fell in love with the color and all reasoning went out the window.... the BF blazer was a consignment shop find, so no option to size down. I worry that if I add more layers it will look like I'm swimming in fabric. Or will it be maximalist/trendy?! hmm...

1,2,3 fit and look great. 4 the sleeves are too long.
5 shoulders seem okay but sleeve slightly long.
6 shoulders too wide and style just doesn’t work.
7 looks good
8. Shoulders are a bit wide and the style is kind of Matrixy.

#2 and #7 are the best fits, especially if you scrunch the sleeves of #7. NICE.

How attached are you to the rest? Some are alterable. Some too wide in the shoulders. Some too short for pants, and some too wide and long in the sleeves.

Thanks, Angie! The only ones I am really attached to are 1, 3 and 5.
7 I have only worn with shift dresses, white jeans and a tee+maxi skirt.
I don't know that I would bother altering any of them except maybe 5.

Oh, I really like no 8. The wide shoulders look intentional to my eye and I think it is such a cool, fashion forward piece. Like the vibe of it. Can imagine it could be fun to style it in different ways...

#5 looks awfully short to wear with pants and jeans. Are you tall? Try the blazer with skirts and dresses. That could work well.

Thanks, Angie! I am tall - just shy of 5'7", but I'm mostly torso (my inseam is 30.25"). Maybe that's why the lengths of 1 and 5 look "off"?

Aha. There you go. You need a Tall or Long in jackets - or at least a longer silhouette.
