pretty much stressing with you guys here
because I can't do it on Facebook because the people who will be there may see
it…

Tonight I am going to a Karaoke night organised
by some students at church (ie this will be mostly attended by students and I will probably be the oldest by 15 years). I'd
like to encourage them. I think we are just singing along with youtube in a lecture theatre! I have done
karaoke once in my entire life - in 1999 in Japan!!

Now I like singing - I lead church singing
regularly, was in the school choir and musical production, and tend to embarrass
my children by bursting into song around the house when some phrase or
situation reminds me of a song…

But - my knowledge of popular/rock songs over
my lifetime is woeful. I don't know many
lyrics and prefer to listen to talking on the radio. In 1999 I sang a Simon and
Garfunkel song when we did karaoke because that was about all I knew!

Recently however, with my daughters are into
it, I have listened to quite a lot of current pop music and am looking up the
lyrics and trying to study a couple of ones I quite like. Is this tragic?
Should I just find something 40 years old or not sing at all?

Sing what you want! And don't the machines show the lyrics? I once sang Only The Good Die Young at a karaoke party... yikes!

Well I don't think we are using a machine - just a monitor with Youtube - but it isn't hard to find lyrics there!

Just bow out gracefully if you don't know the song or the lyrics aren't shown. In my experience no one is going to force you to sing.

Oh, I don't think anyone will make me sing something I don't know - but the "liking singing" part of me does want to to join in (and is simultaneously scared of looking like the daggy mum my kids think I am - oh well, maybe that's inevitable!)

I feel a bit embarrassed about starting this thread. It isn't a big deal or anything - just feeling like chatting and no-one close to me at work to chat with!

Sing as long as you can...don't know the words, arms up in the air and dance...Mostly have fun, mostly look crazy to the kids, They will love you for it.. smile...

Thanks for all the advice. Turns out it was fine! It wasn't what I was expecting and way more fun. More like a singalong than a concert. The words were on the projector at the front of the room and people just got given the mikes and sang where they were sitting on the bench desks. There were 3 mikes so no-one was singing alone and everyone who knew the song joined in. I only knew about a quarter of the songs but that was fine as I had a slight sore throat anyway. I got handed the mike a couple of times (for songs from musicals) and chose a couple (we texted them in), one of which I got a mike for (Rather be) and one I didn't (I Will Survive, which everyone totally got in to!) And I thought up enough songs to have some to nominate next time we do it.
